Title: 4-0 and you still don't wave
Post by: Notts red on Sunday, September 25, 2011, 19:18:49
Anyone else agree that Paolo doesn't actually know what the fans are singing, I think he just hears his name and can't make out the rest. Hands on hips with a wry smile was good enough for me though.

Yeah, just need to know how it goes ? Or somebody could just tell him for future reference. The away fans take the piss when we don't get a wave back from him.

I'm not offended by his lack of response. He either doesn't understand it or he's so focused on the game he doesn't hear it.

Perhaps when it's being sung we could all start waving to him !

I like to think he's "in the zone." The other justification, being a fan of our manager, could be that he wants to set an example to his players by saying he's just as focused on the game as them. They say the best managers in the work place are the ones who practice what they preach, I suspect the same is true of football managers.

Paolo comes across as someone who like to interact with the fans so maybe your right, he is too focused.

He waved at Burton, I think. It's not big deal really is it!

No big deal, was just trying to decide if he understands the song and chooses not to wave or he doesn't have a clue what the fans are singing.

I reckon he's been advised not to wave...just in case.

To be fair I met Paolo Di Canio for the first time yesterday as we (few of us Supporters) sponsored the game. When we entered his office the first thing I said to him was that we are not a Company just normal Town fans who sponsor 2-3 games a season.
It was almost like lighting a firework he seemed to like meeting actual Supporters. He was funny, charming and of course very passionate. Made my day getting photo's, signed programmes and a signed shirt from a football legend.
Adam at the Club said that was one of the best pre-match chats with the match sponsors. I put it down to him being in front of fans and not Company's . From players to pasta all was being discussed in a very open manner.

I said I hoped he was in this for the long run and of course whilst you cannot guarantee anything he appears to be liking the role. He talked very open about sustainability of teams and getting everything right behind the scenes. He is wary of one season success and modelled Southampton & Brighton who have great set ups behind the scenes as clubs that we must aspire to. If the Board are ambitious then his time with us could be extended.

Interesting comments from Matt Ritchie after the game who said Paul Caddis is the best footballer at the Club.

The whole day was simply great and had a great chat with Grazioli on the pitch before the game, Such a nice fella and talked about Swindon Supporters. He said he never could understand the support he got here, he said he didn't think he played great for us but the fans were simply wonderful.

Didn't get in until 10.00pm last night and have felt tired all day but a great day with laughs all round including Phil King giving a great one liner on recent events.......raised the roof with laughter.

West Ham fans outside Didcot station took a great delight on seeing Paolo's signature on the shirt.

Only got a yellow card from the Mrs as well and hoping we can nail another win at Macclesfield.

Onwards and Upwards...........and took delight in ensuring as many people on Oxford station got a glimpse of the Swindon Colours. :)

Sounds like you had a great day Duke. A friend of mine has been a West ham supporter for years and thinks The world of Paolo like most hammers fans. He bought himself and his son a stfc season ticket this year mainly because he loves Paolo. He does still go up to upton park but now also looks forward to coming to the County Ground.

Dacci un onda! is Give us a wave .. if it  helps

   awesome.

"onda" is a wave of the sea variety.  There isn't really a succinct expression which translates across!

"dacci un cenno di saluto con la mano" doesn't strike me as a particularly sing-able phrase...

machine translation 0 - 1 human translation

Don't get another, or you may get an automatic one match ban

Perhaps Paolo's suits are so tight he can't raise an arm to wave.

Maybe a better translation is: Onda a noi!

It also fits in with the tune...Paolo! Paolo! Onda a noi! Paolo! Onda a noi!

And the fact we've already determined that onda is the incorrect translation.

You're better off just singing

Paolo, Paolo, darci un Ciao...
or

Paolo, Paolo, darci un onda

Did you even read Forza Swindon's post?

Dacci un Onda would probably work if we played at the Oasis rather than the CG.

Thank you Cookie, nice to see it didn't escape everyone!  :)

FWIW, Babelfish is pretty cack, especially if you have words with one or more translations.  It's OK if you need to get the general gist of a text really quickly, but it can't detrmine context, etc.
Take it from one who knows!

Try this instead: http://www.wordreference.com/enit/wave

Right, but the problem is you can't sing "Paolo! Paolo! Fare un cenno di saluto con la mano! Paolo! Fare un cenno di saluto con la mano!"...sometimes you have to stretch the meaning a little to make things fit..e.g. "En-ger-land" or "S-windon!"

All I'm doing is coming up with an option...

(Thanks, Babelfish  :badmood:)

Appreciate that totally - like I said, it doesn't really have a good sing-able quality to it... but singing something that is a bit ridiculous is not great either!  Not quite the same as overpronouncing syllables really, or stretching the meaning - just think how much people laugh at stupidly translated signs, etc.
Really not trying to be an arse but just wanted to be helpful in an area I actually know something about for once!
