Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Sussex on Monday, July 11, 2005, 20:14:43 It IS being played at Crawley :beers:
Rang STFC today: Sussex Red: Hello, can you tell me if the pre-season against Crawley will be played at the Broadfield Stadium? Bint on phone: Hang on I'll check with a colleague... Bint on phone: As far as we are aware, yes. Sussex Red: Thanks, you've been most helpful, goodbye. I wasn't convinced by this so rang Crawley to double check, and they said yes it is being played here. Saturday 23rd July, 3pm. If anyone fancies it, a beer before the game? Let me know and I'll PM you my mob no. and we'll sort something. If not I'll just go and sit on my own :/ Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Whits on Monday, July 11, 2005, 20:21:23 classic STFC customer service :-))(

Im going. Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Sussex on Monday, July 11, 2005, 20:40:43 Good point Yeovil :D
I should have been more specific - Walrus, Mex, JMH, adje (BR is back in Swindon I think) or anyone else on here that's fairly local. Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: walrus on Monday, July 11, 2005, 22:44:29 He does indeed. Well up for that - it's my mate's 18th that day, but I wouldn't miss Swindon playing in Crawley for my own bloody wedding. Though knowing mine, and STFC's luck, Crawley will win.
Sorry SR - I'd have texted back this evening but I was in the cinema having the shite scared out of me (The Descent, horrible film!) and was worried about waking you up or summat! Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Monday, July 11, 2005, 23:00:01 im up for it, my best mate down here (the oxford fan) is emigrating the following day to sweden am trying to get him to go. he said he would if there was a neutral part of the ground. if not fuck it im in the crawley end :x
Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: JMH75 on Tuesday, July 12, 2005, 07:23:46 I'm definitely up for going to the game and for meeting up beforehand for a drink.
Walrus, you’re probably the best man to nominate a meeting place/pub. Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Johno on Tuesday, July 12, 2005, 08:16:32 frustrating that these games aren't closer to calne, chippenham area then i would go.
Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: BrightonRed on Tuesday, July 12, 2005, 10:53:56 I should be making the trip down. Best pre-season opportunity to gauge our prospects / rate the new signings.
Best be fucking sunny though! Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: walrus on Tuesday, July 12, 2005, 16:52:50 There's a pub on the Broadfield Stadium complex I think, don't know if it's any good as I haven't been there since I was about 9... Think it's called The Tavern but my memory could be fucking with me. Probably best place to meet as it's a trek from the town centre where the "good" pubs are... Though SR is probably best qualified to know the best boozers seeing as he works just a few yards up the road!

Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, July 12, 2005, 18:58:23 This fixture v Crawley will provide a rare example of STFC playing a team who's name is also that of an England Test cricketer......the eponymous John Crawley....he of the getting beaten up in a bar in Cairns.
In total there are 3 other instances namely I. D. G . Salisbury purveyor of leg break and googly.....we beat Salisbury in the FA Cup 4-0 in 67. Shrewsbury......Arthur Shrewsbury who played in the 1890's is a genuine legend of the English game.....he was an early sporting impresario, who took cricket teams to Oz and rugby to NZ.....he was also a very good player, he commited suicide in the Trent Bridge Inn. And the Hon CJ Coventry in 1888, who I know nothing about. I'll PM my number to those interested and hopefully sort a beer meet before the game. Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: walrus on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, 11:44:56 Bollocks, I'm working 1-5pm in the Next Sale on the 23rd, which is a real bitch as it'll be a nightmare to convince them to let me off.
So the real issue is, do I pull a sickie (bearing in mind I'm tempted to take the Wednesday off as well as I'm owed a few sickies), or do I tell them the truth and I say I have a hospital appointment and cannot possibly work? :D Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Sussex on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, 20:47:33 If you ask for the time off and they say no, and then take it as a sickie they'll suss it.
Can you swap shifts with someone? ie: do the morning instead or work Sunday? If not pull a sickie :beers: Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, 21:12:37 i will come up to gatwick and fuckin drag you out of that store by your nose hair, be at the railway at one or my threat will become reality 8)
Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Sussex on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, 21:29:45 Railway at 1 it is then chaps! :D
Mex, are you driving, or going by train and having a few shandys? (I can do either) - bearing in mind you've got your club to run that night! JMH is coming, Walrus will get a kicking if he doesn't, BR is hoping to, and I've got 2 mates coming (AFC wombles and Gill's  ) Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, 21:33:30 i will be driving probably, cant be arsed with train, also i dont drink (not my choice)
you will be able to recgonise me as i will be the one wearing clothes that dont make me look like a deacon, which as you probably already know is a fashion faux pas in crawley. Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Sussex on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, 21:40:39 Sorry, hadn't thought of that - apologies.
I'll make some calls and get things sorted for The Railway. Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, 21:43:26 dont apologise drinking is for losers water is for winners
:( Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: walrus on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, 22:29:44 Right Station at one it is or I get beats :(
I'm doing overtime so it should be simple enough to cancel. It must have slipped my mind. I've roped a few people into coming to see this friendly, see if we can't get the attendence over 50 yet! Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: strooood on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, 22:39:30 i'll come, only if ash drives 8) i'll rope him into coming, i think he's up for it, spence is coming to so that could sway him be-yurs>> :beers:

Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Sussex on Thursday, July 14, 2005, 21:29:05 Right then, looks like we're meeting at The Railway, in Crawley at 1pm. We'll all be driving I think, so it'll be a leisurely pint or two beforehand. Anyone got a problem with this then let me know?
I'll post directions for you if need be - it's not far from the mighty 'Broadfield Stadium"! Dex/Ash/Spence - PM me if you fancy a beer before the game. All others I'll call to confirm. Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Spencer_White on Friday, July 15, 2005, 19:34:37 Sorry to be so fucking sad as to look up a pub on the internet. But is that it?
http://members.tripod.com/~jonrose/firkin.jpg Only finnishing work at 12 but might be able to make it. Bit tight on time. Swift one. May be four of us, possibly more. Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Sussex on Friday, July 15, 2005, 19:46:21 Link doesn't work mate.
It's this pub: http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/11/119/Railway/Crawley You can do Swindon to Crawley in about 1 and a half hours. A lot less if Asher's driving I'd have thought! Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: walrus on Saturday, July 16, 2005, 10:06:46 Hour and a half if you're motoring! My record is only about 1 hr 20 I think, and that's doing the ton pretty much all the way.
One tip is to go via the M3 to skip all the roadworks on the M25, and shave 10 miles off your journey (but you do drive along slower dual carriageways, 40mph/50mph restrictions etc.). Using this route can make a huge difference to your journey time. Esp. because of the roadworks between J12 & J15 M25. Get off the M4 at J10 and head through Bracknell to the M3, then rejoin the M25. Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: sonicyouth on Saturday, July 16, 2005, 20:36:43 anyone fancy giving me a lift? i have a strange urge to go after today and i'll probably get lost driving there myself

Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: walrus on Sunday, July 17, 2005, 16:57:32 There's not a carpark I don't think (or if there is it isn't a big one) but on matchdays people tend to park along the grass verges of the dual carriageway strip between the M23 and Broadfield Stadium roundabout. I'm sure we can find parking places, I'm an expert match-day car-parker. I parked on someone's driveway for the Brentford away game, and in front of a police/fire/some kind of station for the Colchester game :D
I got that day off, but the shifts manager moaned like a bitch. But ahh well, Swindon always comes first! 8) Title: Pre-season V's Crawley Post by: Sussex on Monday, July 18, 2005, 10:03:47 There is a carpark round the back of the ground (I park there for work) and it's about the size of the CG carpark.
Plenty of other places to park around there also. |
