Title: Brittania Stadium
Post by: Kinky Tom on Monday, July 11, 2005, 16:09:54
Anyone else there when Chief ruined opening day for them?

We battered them that day, and the result was never really in doubt even if we did leave it incredibly late.

ps.  I have no idea what made me think of this.

Can someone confirm if my memory is right on this.

Didn't Sir Stanley Matthews take a penalty as part of the opening ceremony but hit his shot really soft and some steward had to tap it in the net.

Mind you Stan was about 108 years old or something so will take that into consideration.

Yeah, I was there that day!  Didn't they also have Tom Jones singing at half time as well?

Can't remember grayx, I remember Tom Jones making a fool of himself flapping his arms around all over the place to Delilah.

Yeah Stanley Matthews took a penalty from a couple of metres out, it didn't quite reach the net so I think they let him have another touch to get it in, either that or one of the stewards knocked it in. The Tom Jones bloke was shite.

Bless him! After the Match at the Victoria Ground in 1990 when we drew 1-1, he said we were the best footballing side he'd seen that season, a man of taste. 8)

Loads of people said that. David Pleat says it in the television broadcast of the PO final.

But unfortunately we were one small club too many in the top flight for the football league.

I know, but it was good to be there, if only for one season.

The 1990 team never got the chance.

They would have stayed up. No doubt about it.

Totally agree with that. Excellent team, and Sky weren't involved then so money wouldn't have come into it as much. :D
