'No heart'

PAOLO Di Canio has demanded more from some of his summer signings after expressing his frustration at the lack of heart shown against Shrewsbury at the weekend.

Quote
“When you sign 15 players you have to pray that you were right about 10 or 12 of those,” conceded Di Canio.

“I didn’t make a mistake over their technical quality but in football you have to play with your heart and a few of the players are empty, I am really disappointed and I will make my decision in the future.

“I can teach technical and tactical situations in training but I cannot give my heart to them.

“It is not all of them, four or five of them were very good, especially the defensive line. Paul Caddis, Aden Flint and Joe Devera did very well, especially because they were always under pressure.

“Sometimes, especially in the middle, we should have more desire to press forward.

I know we are only 5 games in, and we've over analysed everything already, but some of the (once refreshing) noises coming out of Di Canio are worrying me a little. Perhaps he thinks criticism will fire the players up, and maybe it will....but...

I'm starting to think that the problem with Di Canio is he is a bit of a freak (as a player he played like a fan) and he's struggling to identify with the players. 90% of players are not like that, especially nowadays. I didnt think it would be a problem, but he does seem to be getting disgusted with the players instead of working with them.

"I am really disappointed and I will make my decision in the future." If this week doesnt go well then he's off?

So he's realised our centre mids aint good enough. Hurry up and address this glaringly obvious problem then

I read it more along the lines of making changes to the team.

It's interesting that he appears to be singling out the players he's brought in for criticism, and he's said in that interview that Devera played well. So who is he unhappy with? Smith, McCormack, Gabilondo, Clarke, Magera, Esajas? All of them?

I'm rapidly developing the feeling that I've been had. I wasn't happy with PDC's appointment, but have been won over pretty easily by what he said and did in the run up to the season and started off the season with the genuine belief that he would be an inspired choice and that this year was the start of something special. Whilst my balloon isn't burst, it is deflating quickly.

That's what I was trying to say yesterday Spence. He's treating the players like he'd like to be treated as as a player and unfortunately most footballers these days don't have the same passion and commitment that Paolo did.

Personally I don't agree with your assessment, but even if you are right surely we've not got any spare in the budget. Can't see us getting people out and bringing people in within the 2 days left of the transfer window.  There is of course the loan market, which has been more miss than hit.

look at the last line of you quoted from the article above. Crystal clear i think.

I think you are right with regard of players coming in and out. If so then i fear a season of disapointment is what we will get.

I think thats a rediculous statement. Risser is the one who isnt good enough. Ferry and McCormack are star quality for this league and J Smith can back them up. We overran City on wednesday.

The players are good enough (maybe a no1 goalkeeper needed), Di Canio needs to sort himself out because quite frankly at the moment I think someone else could do a better job. Certainly we could get a manager who wouldnt have made such a rediculously negative half time intervention on saturday.

so it's ridiculous for me to have an opinion on what i have seen, yet your view is based on nothing more than rumour and hearsay.

I hope I am wrong about our centre midfield.

I wasn't at the game on Saturday, it may be true we sat too deep in this one game. I am basing my opinion on the only games I have been to: Crewe, Cheltenham and Oxford coupled with what I have already seen from Ferry in previous seasons. First half Crewe aside my opinion is the attack and aspect of the defence were far more worrying.

Not saying I'm always right though :)

Its all very well having the biggest heart in the world but if there is no talent then its not going to work.

Should we start to ask whether these players Paolo has assembled are actually good enough, the right players for this league?

Perhaps PDC is struggling to get over the fact that these players he has signed will never be as good as he was and he needs to start thinking with his head, and not with his heart.

Rotherham on Saturday on TV is now key and we have to take something from it to break this run of defeats.

I remember people saying the same about Hoddle.

Arguably Hoddle's most successful spell as a manager was when he was still playing.

get yer boots on Paolo!

If he could, he'd find it a lot easier to influence players during the game!

I enjoy reading your take on football matters. don't always see it your way but respect your opinion and often agree with alot of it. Deffo one of the more clued up supporters imo.

Obviously we disagree on our central midfield area, but from the article you quoted i think Di canio isn't happy with it. His is the view that matters most at the moment and that was what i was on about above.

One of the things that came out from Hoddle's time as England manager, was that he liked to show the players he could still do stuff in training, that they couldn't.

Oh right, sorry. Yes he seems not too chuffed, coupled with the fact he subbed Ferry. I wonder which two central midfielders he'll try next, or have we used all combinations now?

Matt Clark and Abdul Said?

McCormack is about as good as you'll get in L2.

Remmember before we signed Douglas, we went about 10 years without a decent holding midfielder.
