Title: Steve Williams
Post by: DMR on Thursday, July 21, 2011, 12:58:29
One for us golf geeks

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/golf/14237031.stm

Always had a reputation as a fucking chode but this really wound me up.

"I, along with a lot of people, lost a lot of respect for Tiger [over his extra-marital affairs] and I pointed out before his return at the Masters at Augusta in 2010 that he had to earn back my respect."

To which my response would be what's it got to do with you, he's your boss and he's made you a millionaire you stupid cunt!

Discuss.

For the last 10 years Woods made Willams the highest paid 'sporting' New Zealander, yet all he did was virtually carry a bag around a golf course.

Due to the fact he was on 10%, Williams made an estimated £20m. Nice work if you can get it !!

He did a bit more than just carry a bag around, there is more to a caddies job than that but still its one of the easier ways to earn a few million £.

I assume he will just stick with Adam Scott as he has done recently and he might earn more £'s out of that than with Tiger.  Tiger is done IMO, the injury he has got is the worse kind for a golfer, other than losing a hand obviously.  He will never be anywhere near the standard he once was.

The thing is if Tiger played "within himself" rather than trying to lampoon the ball everytime he wouldn't have had so much knee trouble. And IMO would have probably won more - look at Hoylake.

Yeah but would he have won as many majors patting it round? Doubt it.

Good point but you've only got to look at the other major winners and see that you don't have to be a big hitter to win. Johnson, Immleman, Montgomerie (oooops)  ;D

Genuine question - what does a caddie do other than carry a bag of golf bats?

Tells the golfer which golf bat to use.

Tells the golfer which golf bat to use.

Surely the golfer should know which racket to hit with.

Shouldn't the golfer know which bat is best?  I can't see Tiger Woods standing on the short grassy bit quite far from the flag saying "if only someone would tell me whether to hit it with the big one, the square one or the wooden one".

I think it's a bit like paying someone to be your friend.

Perhaps if I pay you, you'll tell me which foot to kick with (rather than neither against Forest, or whoever it was)!

I think the trick is to wait until they get past you and then sort of belly flop on them and hope they fall over, the ref won't mind.

I'm with Williams on this to a point. You have to remember that his name got dragged through the shit over Tiger's affairs too. He was loyal and has served Tiger woods very well over the years. If caddying was as easy as just carrying the bag i'd be doing my best to getting a job as a caddie.

Genuine question - what does a caddie do other than carry a bag of golf bats?

Most caddies will walk the course at least once before a tournament taking notes on yards and how the greens lay.
And remember except the top caddies like Williams all there travel expenses come out of there wedge and it is an incredible amount of traveling they do.
The top caddies earn top dollar....the rest earn a good living and no more and if you saw the weather at both the Scots and British Open it is not always plain sailing.
The top caddies will get paid a retainer like the top jockeys...a yearly salary plus 10%.
To put it into perspective David Howell had a bad year(relatively) last season earning around £300,000.....ten per cent of that isn't that great now is it for his caddie.
