Title: The formation
Post by: Kinky Tom on Thursday, July 7, 2005, 13:48:25
So, with Whalley signed up, and possible Paul Smith coming how are we going to line up?

If Smith does sign I would imagine he will be one of the first names on the team sheet, as will Whalley.  Does this mean they will be a central two?

Ive been trying to suss out what the formation will be for a while, think how we shape up this season may have a lot to do with how good Shakes proves to be.  I can't see him playing wing-back, so if he plays then we're talking 4-4-2 I assume meaning:

Evans

Jenks - Ifil - O'Hanlon - Nicho/J. Smith

Shakes - Whalley - P. Smith - Migz (remembering King playing him out wide, while fat boy Howard played central)

Then of course any 2 from 4 up front.

If Shakes isn't quite up to it yet then perhaps the 3-5-2, meaning a new CB is imperative:

Evans

Ifil - O'hanlon - NEW PLAYER

Jenks - P. Smith - Whalley - Migz - Nicho/J. Smith

And again 2 from 4

All these signings seem to be impressive, and given a lot of their respective experience should 'gel' quite quickly.

As long as some players don't mind on missing out due to whatever formation is implemented on any particular occasion, and as long as we sign a left sided midfielder aswell as the experienced CB we need then we have what promises to be a very exciting season ahead of us.

Moist moist moist!!!

my current prediction is 4-3-3

Evans

Jenks
O'Hanlon
Ifil
Smith

t'other smith if he signs or someone else similar
Whalley
Migz

Fallon
Cureton
Roberts

subs
Thorpe
A N Other centre back
Pook
Shakes
Bulman

i have to say that as long as the formation works properly that dosnt half look a bad side :beers:

I just asked a question about this on another thread. You seem to hgave answered it here. I think the 3-5-2 would work very well, even with possibly shakes on the right, as i do recall he can play as RB if needed.

I cant see us playing 4-4-2, we dont have enough natural wingers.

I wondered about something similar, but we'll be too exposed down the flanks that way I reckon.

if re-watching the 95/96 end of season video taught me anything is that you need good wingers to whip in crosses.

So many of the cheifs goals came from crosses from Robinson/Allen/Gooden/Bodin etc

We could play a 4-1-3-1-1 with Whalley in front of the back line and two strikers possibly with Cureton feeding off flick ons from Fallon.

One thing we know about King is that he doesn't have a favoured formation and fit players to it, but rather looks around, see who's available then picks a formation for them.

So I think, we'll have to wait and see who signs, then who's suspended and injured and go from there.

If smith sings then I can't see us getting a left sided midfielder, think we could then only afford the centre back. I think a player like Smith is more important than a left winger at the mo, he's what we've been missing most.
Isn't Whalley a lefty? Also J Smith can play left wing.

do you think though if he is playing cureton and thorpe then he might try to play th
through the middle? apologies if this has been brought up!

what about the old diamond formation? wish i knew how to lay out these formations better but you get the jist

                               evans

        jenkins        ifil            ohanlon        smith

                               p smith

             shakes              roberts         whalley

             thorpe                                 cureton

just something different to hats been put up!

whalley and shakes can still get down the wings but it might keep us a bit tighter in defence
