While in Gloucestershire yesterday i was reading about this on a small sign on the edge of a field,delivered to the farm and the farmer was telling me how Jordan's pay them to keep an edge of the land for wild flower and poppies etc.They also supply the wild flower seeds and advice on the best way to cultivate a certain piece of land.
Have seen a marked increase in wild flowers on the fields edge these last few years.
Got to say the countryside is looking stunning this year and i have noticed more birds of prey on my travels which is a sure sign of more small wildlife they feed on.
Our farmers do a great job with our landscape and it is good to see a company making a real effort to give a significant bit back to our countryside....it really looks a picture at present.

Make the most of it Leefer....the little strips and corners of fields which have been left uncultivated over the last 20 odd years, thus encouraging flowers and birds etc, only exist because the farmers were subsidised to leave them.

This government has introduced a voluntary scheme, so presumably your example is because of this.  I suppose inevitably without the subsidy farmers will have to cultivate all their land.

Interesting Reg,the small blessing of foot and mouth is that it left great areas of land without cattle and it has been left to ruin,ruin being back to being wild which has meant lots of regrowth of old plants and foliage which of course brings back the birds and other wildlife.
The downside was as i also saw yesterday..farmers having to sell plots to developers because the cattle are no more.

There was a piece on Countryfile where one farmer had ripped out all the margins so he could grow more wheat. Price had doubled from last year so he had no choice. Cereal prices are rising like mad thanks to the demand of China and India's massive populations so even an extra acre or two can make a massive difference to some farmers.

In the case of kestrels a sure sign their natural habitat is disappearing and they are seeking food closer to hedgerows.

Agree Batch,so for me every little helps and it is good to see a company trying to make a little effort at least.

On another note i belive forest greens new pitch is covered in shit so it is eco friendly
