Football League clubs vote in favour of Uefa financial rules

Crawley will have to do some major restructuring when this comes into force. The majority of clubs' income is brought in on a matchday, and their average attendance was something like 1,200 last season - appauling for a comprehensive Championship winning side who play good football.

Except, as I understand it, the regulations don't cover cash injections. If this is the case Crawley will be ok.

League Two has been operating with a Salary Cost Management Protocol for a number of years but from this summer the amount of turnover that can be spent on wages, which currently stands at 60 per cent, will be reduced to 55 per cent.

Turnover relates to Football League cash distributions and payments from TV companies, gate receipts and commercial revenue but it does not include cash injections, donations or prize money from cup matches.

Crawley, Notts County and Peterborough got around it in a few different ways but most common is bonuses (not linked to wages) paid at certain points which boost players income to an acceptable (to them) amount. There were also private sponsorships of players.

If it is going to work then the bonuses must be counted as part of the wages which currently they arent, the league will have to close down this loophole.

if turnover includes cup income then surely Crawley will be near the top of the list in L2 after their payday at Old Trafford that must have netted them about £1 million.

There is a mandatory wage cap in this division that limits spending on players' wages to 60% of club turnover.

I do not know if this rule is based upon last seasons figures or on expected figures for the coming season.
