It would have been far more interesting to have seen Sugar interviewing Barry Hearn from Leyton
Orient and the Barnet chairman, to have had a lower league perspective.

his autobiography is a top read and gives a lot of football chairman insights. a funny moment being when he sued terry venables and gave the court winnings to great ormand street with the name on the big cheque reading from porky pies ltd.

Think it was the Independent last Sunday that ran a piece with about a dozen actual proper businessmen (and women) hooting with derision at The Apprentice as any kind of model for entrepeneurs and S'rAlan in general. He's a talking head who once knew what he was talking about but these days exists largely to promote his own Brand Sugar. If you're taking advice from S'rAlan, you're either easily impressed, so far behind the curve you're out of sight, or a TV executive.

Interesting when he said that being Chairman of THFC meant he neglected his other business interests. You saw a flicker of regret. At the time, he had lucked out and was sitting on the country's top computer manufacturer, that basically turned to shit in the time he was playing at football. Had he kept focussed on it, he could have had a very different life. A little less Donald Trump, a little more Steve Jobs.

A lot of talk on the programme from Sugar about running football clubs more like running a professional business. A lot about agents being rubbish and ruining the game. For me it was a prime example of what Fitton wanted to achieve here as chairman. I agree with the view but the problem is (and it was pointed out on the programme as well) that you have to keep up with the others if you want success in football. Running it like a normal business won't get you success. We've certainly found that out here this season. I think Fitton became almost a little too obsessed with this ideal and lost focus of the fact he was actually running a football club.

The basic fact is that once you have an Ambramovich or Mansour prepared to spend anything to win at all costs, then all the other clubs have one of three choices i) find a billionaire nutcase of their own ii) live on credit cards iii) be financially stable, but irrelevant.

The Premier League has clearly decided that it would rather be a circus for billionaire nutcases than a financially sustainable business, so nothing's going to happen.

It's Alan Sugar trying to work out why football is in such a financial mess. Unfortunately, the programme information suggests he doesn't actually speak to anybody lower the the Premier League level, where most of the effects are being borne out.
