Title: Broadband speed question Post by: The Grim Reaper on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:03:07 Am i right in thinking that the speed of my broadband will only be as good as whatever the speed my laptop can exchange data with the wireless modem? And if so is it therefore pointless upgrading my broadband package?
Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:13:18 Depends on the wireless protocol of your router/wireless card in the laptop.
If they're wireless G (802.11G) that's a speed of 54Mbits/s which is faster than most broadband line speeds. Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: The Grim Reaper on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:17:45 I'm not a pc tech at all Si Pie, how would i find that out mate?
Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:23:54 What router do you have?
Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:25:14 There should be a wireless or networks icon in the system tray (the bit in the bottom right of the screen next to the clock), which if you click on it will bring up details of the connection.
If you get stuck post again with your windows version as to find out will be different depending on which version you use. Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: The Grim Reaper on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:27:09 A Netgear 54 Mbps wireless ADSL2+ modem router DG834G V5
Can't seem to find details within laptop for internal wireless card Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:29:24 What windows version are you using?
Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: The Grim Reaper on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:30:50 Have Windows 7 on laptop as supplied.
Internal wifi card is an Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:31:26 Although the theoretical throughput of Wireless G is 54 Mbits/s, it will typically have throughput of 22 Mbits/s.
If you're on standard ADSL Max (i.e. up to 8 Mbits/s) it could be worth an upgrade to ADSL2+ (up to 24 Mbits/s). Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: The Grim Reaper on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:37:19 I will speak to Virgin tomorrow then. Laptop used to be a lot faster at my old house on there cable network, but since i moved they couldnt supply their cable broadband as not cabled area but did supply a ASDL service over BT's network but every page takes a while to load.

I can't think of one occassion where I've achieved near to the quoted maximum speeds. Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: The Grim Reaper on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:49:26 is there a reliable speed checker that does not require to to register or pay anything?

I can't think of one occassion where I've achieved near to the quoted maximum speeds. Obviously depends how far you are from the exchange. When I was on ADSL, I consistently got maximum speeds. Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: The Grim Reaper on Monday, May 2, 2011, 09:57:47 Hmm download speed 5.51 Mbps upload speed 0.81 Mbps.
Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, May 2, 2011, 10:31:48 I've found that most routers seem to automatically select wifi channel 11. You could try changing it to 1 or 6 (6 tends to be good) in the router settings.
If there are a few routers around you in neighbouring places all using the same channel it's going to lead to interference. Title: Re: Broadband speed question Post by: THE FLASH on Monday, May 2, 2011, 10:50:26 I did have Onspeed once....very quick.
