Title: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: STFC Bart on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 17:05:00 Hi All.
Just a little concerned regarding Nick's programme comments( and i have emailed him to tell him so). Regarding a whole new budgeting exercise for league 2- whilst i appreciate you are limited on what you can spend on your playing budget as it is as a % of turnover-i sincerely hope that we will not be scrimping and scraping in other areas as well- the fans deserve much better and at the end of the day it is the bopard that have got us into the mess in the first place. People need to remember that we got out of Div 4 last time by spending money we didn't have, that won't happen this time....a drop in revenue will mean a drop in playing budget. The key to any success then will be in getting the management right....you can succeed in Div 4 on little resources...see D and R and Stanley. here lies the peril....it's an inexact science....if we get it wrong then we could be looking at a season of struggle. Money might seem like a safe pair of hands, they wanted him last time, but wouldn't pay Newcastle.....but Money fucked up at Luton. Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: Ardiles on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 17:21:02 There's a line though. As I know I've pointed out before, in terms of gates, we're one of the bigger teams in League 1 (although some of the 4 or 5 teams that beat us on that score clearly beat us by some way). In League 2, we will be punching well, well below our weight - with a very comfortable advantage over almost all of the other sides in terms of revenues coming in.
So for that reason, we should be one of the bigger spenders in League 2...and we shouldn't be seeking to emulate the likes of Cheltenham or Aldershot. Anything else would be perverse. Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: Arriba on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 17:22:41 i dont know who is under contract next season, but from what i've heard some players earn it could dent what could be used on other players wages.
what some earn may also put clubs off coming in for them. the mistakes made this season may yet bite even harder Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: Reg Smeeton on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 17:25:53 There's a line though. Numbers and income don't necessarily equate....ask Bradford City, who easily eclipse anything we'll get, but are in danger of Conference next season. In Div 4 you need honest players....this season we've had too many happy to take their money and give little in return....these need to go. Getting rid may not be a simple as we'd like. Money would be a good shout if he wants the job. He "fucked up" by getting them in the top 3 or 4 all season and they still have a decent chance of going up via the play-offs. With the money Crawley have spent thats not bad going! But the point of the thread is the restrictions on the playing budget that will come in to play as a result of our relegation to League 2. I don't deny that success is not guaranteed. I'm simply pointing out that we will have a financial advantage over just about every one of the other clubs in the division. And we need to exploit that. We could be the first ex-premier league team to play in the conference !!!!!!!!!!!In Div 4 you need honest players....this season we've had too many happy to take their money and give little in return....these need to go. @dougieno4 @scott_15_ @sheezdogg @michaelrose3 you know you should all lower your wages and help get us out of league 2 dougieno4 Jonathan Douglas @Louisjsmith it's in our contracts already.. there you go. Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: DV on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 22:12:39 all 4 out of contract anyway?
Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: mrverve on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 22:15:55 all 4 out of contract anyway? Not Douglas, no. edit: and Rose. Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: DV on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 22:27:59 Douglas wouldnt have signed a 3 year deal?
Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: mrverve on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 22:32:43 He signed a two year deal with an clause for a third which would be triggered by playing 25 games in his 2nd season. So technically he has triggered it and along with a wage cut he is under contract for another year. However I think that 3rd year is subject from approval from the club.
Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: DV on Saturday, April 23, 2011, 22:41:08 I would have thought Douglas would also have to agree to the extension?
Isnt the clause that a new contract gets automatically offered when the quota of games is hit, then its up to Douglas to agree to it and sign? I dont remember any concrete stories about his contract being extended by a further year. As far as I'm aware he's out of contract in May and he can fuck off. From what he's saying it's up to the board. He has said it himself that he is settled here. I would love him to stay. He hasn't been the problem. Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, April 24, 2011, 00:46:21 Finances; spending and income; can be worked out with fairly simple(ish) maths.
Luckily football is more complicated. Whilst obviously the football and finance sides tie together, and I appreciate the board trying to work one into the shape of the other. You can't run a football team on a simple ideological set of rules, well maybe if you had an infinite amount of resources, but we don't and we can't. That is where our board has gone horribly wrong. Stop posting absolute negative drivel for the sake of it. Div 4, spending/budget cuts, worst season in the world ever.... I bet you're having a good tug at the thought of it. At least DV doesn't get any pleasure out of our peril, for you I am not so sure. At least DV doesn't get any pleasure out of our peril, for you I am not so sure. It is reasonably difficult to take any positives from this season, sadly that's just the way it is. If you would like to enter some positve thoughts into the debate, then feel free. I'm nothing if not open minded. Title: Re: Nick Watkins programme comments Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, April 24, 2011, 12:29:13 I think quite a few people have realised that there's more to life on a Saturday afternoon. That's pretty positive. It's only football after all.

If I am not mistaken, it is in fact a roman word. The idea is not only to express your opinion, but also to elaborate so that others have the opportunity to discuss your thoughts. But they need to know your thoughts if they are to discuss them. So if you would, please, do expand........
