Look forward to some of the away followings. Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Nemo on Monday, April 18, 2011, 17:56:25 Not a terrible idea, would go some way to differentiating the League Cup from the FA Cup and giving it some point. I guess the issues comes from European spots, as neither FA would want to donate theirs.

We see British clubs play the old firm on a fairly regular basis in Europe so the novelty value has disappeared.
Scunthorpe v St Johnstone doesn’t quite have the same appeal. Scottish clubs on the other hand need to do something to stop their domestic leagues dying a slow death so it makes sense for them to propose the idea. Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Abrahammer on Monday, April 18, 2011, 18:19:08 Scottish Clubs are British clubs. Good point, think that was wishfull thinking on my part. Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: BANGKOK RED on Monday, April 18, 2011, 18:20:27 I think by 'British Clubs', you meant to say 'English (and welsh) Clubs'?
Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Abrahammer on Monday, April 18, 2011, 18:24:25 Well yeah those that come under the banner of the FA.
Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Whits on Monday, April 18, 2011, 19:27:55 st mirren on a tuesday night.... thats a long old poke!
Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Ardiles on Monday, April 18, 2011, 20:45:51 st mirren on a tuesday night.... thats a long old poke! Bad example! St Mirren Park is about 3 mins in a cab (or a 15 minute walk, if you want to stretch your legs) from Glasgow Airport. If we did get St Mirren on a Tuesday night, this one would just about be do-able! Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: pauld on Monday, April 18, 2011, 21:13:26 Oh FFS! OK so your league's shit. Well sort it out then. Stop trying to muscle in on ours

Stop trying to muscle in on ours I like this.Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Summerof69 on Monday, April 18, 2011, 21:15:55 No thanks to a British League Cup. It's bad enough having to go to Carlisle, let alone Inverness Caley Thistle.
Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: leefer on Monday, April 18, 2011, 21:16:38 Went to watch St Mirren v Celtic years back....can remember the ground was painted bright red and both sets of fans were terrifying,it truly was/is a grim place(Paisley i think)
Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: chalkies_shorts on Monday, April 18, 2011, 22:00:59 I like the idea of being ranked 15th within 5 years. Did they get Mr Whippy to come up with that? I wonder where the Corporate lawyer ended up after being bombed out as a non Exec Director of Royal United Hospital Bath - allegedly.

A lot of the clubs in the West play in hovels. Motherwell, Hamilton, Partick etc. Make Swindon look like Vienna! Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Ardiles on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 10:18:14 St Mirren is in Paisley...not a nice place, it's true.

I don't know Motherwell or Hamilton, but nothing wrong with Partick, surely? One of the better parts of Glasgow. Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: ghanimah on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 10:20:02 So we've tried this a few times before and it didn't work, so we'll try again? I can't help thinking of Einstein's quote:
Quote Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: china red on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 10:22:42 Fucking stupid idea. Like the Anglo Italian it would last about two minutes.
Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Arriba on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 11:05:59 it would be making a shit competition even worse.
they'll probably do it Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Bob's Orange on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 11:13:59 St Mirren is in Paisley...not a nice place, it's true. I don't know Motherwell or Hamilton, but nothing wrong with Partick, surely? One of the better parts of Glasgow. It was a bit of an assumption. I have actually only been to Motherwell out of those places but to me most of the West of Scotland has a load of horrible towns (cumbernauld comes to mind) so assumed they were all as bad. Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Ardiles on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 11:25:45 Is Cumbernauld west? Horrible place, I agree. As are a lot of the other satellite towns around Glasgow that grew up when the slums were cleared.
Maybe it's because I spend more time in Argyll and the Clyde Estuary...but I'm a big fan of the west of Scotland. Places like Dunoon, Troon, Largs, Helensburgh and Oban are great places to live. (But sadly, none of them have league football teams.) Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Spencer_White on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 13:23:08 Id love it.
But it probably wouldnt make any difference to us, they would probably only merge the two in the last 16 or something like that. Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: jayohaitchenn on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 13:31:13 I quite like it too. Put those Scottish bastards in their place.
Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Spencer_White on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 13:35:07 Lets face it, the interest in cups at our end of the football league couldnt be much lower.
Lower league fans dont seem to have the imagination for cup competitions any more. Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Bob's Orange on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 14:06:38 Is Cumbernauld west? Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: Highland Robin on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 15:26:19 No thanks to a British League Cup. It's bad enough having to go to Carlisle, let alone Inverness Caley Thistle. Excuse me....nothing wrong with Inverness Caley Thistle....nice ground...east wind roars up the Moray Firth, and I would get to see STFC...lose probably :) Title: Re: British League Cup Post by: reeves4england on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, 15:50:48 Lets face it, the interest in cups at our end of the football league couldnt be much lower. Not until clubs get to rounds where bigger clubs come in, no. It's a bit of a shame really, as it seems to have an effect on the players - how often have we gone out to a team in League Two or the Conference without putting up much of a fight? Far too often.Lower league fans dont seem to have the imagination for cup competitions any more. |
