Title: Safe Standing Petition Post by: london_red on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, 10:22:49 Seen some interesting stuff this morning about the subject of safe standing being raised again.
For the first time since Hillsborough, on Monday the Football authorities (FA, PL, FL) and the police sat down with the Football Supporters Federation to discuss the introduction of safe standing areas at English grounds. Personally I think it is very unlikely anything will come of it, but its a positive step that the issue is at least being discussed. The FSF are putting together a petition to demonstrate to Government that this idea has the support of fans. http://www.fsf.org.uk/petitions/safestanding.php (http://www.fsf.org.uk/petitions/safestanding.php) Title: Re: Safe Standing Petition Post by: fuzzy on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, 11:48:44 Tried signing the petition but image verification wouldn't work. My eyes aren't that bad!
I even reloaded the page and tried again but got the same image. I can't even e mail them to let them know because that requires image verification and shows the same image ::) Title: Re: Safe Standing Petition Post by: thedarkprince on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, 11:49:54 Beeb reporting that the PL will oppose it.

Quote from: Hugh Robertson, Govt Sports Minister Robertson told the meeting frankly that because the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool supporters died, led to Taylor's recommendation that standing be outlawed, the stakes are extremely high to recommend a change. If he were to do so, and there was then a major accident or incident of disorder on a terrace, Robertson said: "The minister's head would be on a spike on Tower Bridge before he could draft a resignation letter." http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/mar/22/terracing-government-reintroduce-standingAnd he's right - all it would take is an outbreak of hooliganism in a standing area, whether standing was relevant to the incident or not, and the Martin Samuels and Henry Winters and all the other PL friendly placemen in the media would be in a frenzy. Once you've done something like this, ostensibly on the grounds of safety, it takes a lot more to undo it than it did to put it in in the first place Title: Re: Safe Standing Petition Post by: LucienSanchez on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, 12:42:45 "They [all-seater stadiums] have led to more women and more children attending the games"
Another reason to bring back standing... Title: Re: Safe Standing Petition Post by: pauld on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, 12:49:55 The PL don't want fans, they want customers. They'll oppose anything which would help restore/boost fan culture
Title: Re: Safe Standing Petition Post by: Spencer_White on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, 17:56:11 It wont change until the clubs think they can make money out of it.
That could happen though, if the atmosphere at games becomes so completely stale that it puts other fans off comming then the clubs may well reconsider. Certainly think the popularity of the DRS could nosedive next season. You can have shit football, but good atmosphere and the fans still enjoy it. You can have great football and shit atmosphere and the fans still enjoy it. But if you end up with both then fans just wont bother turning up. Ive signed it. Any concession from the government/football authorities would be an achievement.
