Going to bite the bullet and replace the carpets with wooden flooring.

Any of you gayers got any recommendations on who to get fit it ?

Got to be the easiest DIY job you will ever have a go at, why pay someone to do it. Just get that "lock together" stuff and all you have to do is cut to the right length.

I'll do it for a crate of cider.

I live in a 17th Century Cottage and the floor is about as level as the Marlborough Downs

you have seen how level my floor is mate !

Don't get anyone like Floors2go to do it.

They wanted to charge me £600 labour for my 50 sq meter area.

I got a local guy to do it for £200.

Then you probably shouldn't get wood laminate flooring.

Either that or chuck a couple of bags of self-leveling compound down first.

are you sure laminate flooring is in keeping with a 17th century cottage?
shouldnt you have wattle and daub on the floor or straw or something?

Go for real wood Fred, something like oak. Costs more but looks alot better and will complement a 17th century property.

Fred....pay a bit extra and get it done properly,someone doing it properly will add five years to its lifetime.......plenty of tradesman in Swindon......get the best quote and some of them will get you the laminate at trade price....i had it done two years back....best thing we ever did especially when winter is here as its so easy to clean.

Ring around though and get plenty of quotes.

Sell the cottage and buy a house with laminate flooring.

We bought ours from Mays World of Carpets, very good quality and came with a 25 year warranty. Quick Step is the brand.

Then we just got quotes from floor layers to lay it at half the cost Mays quoted.

Edit: Nigel Jones Flooring fitted it and apparently got it for us from Mays at trade price: 01793 687 525. He's in Yellow Pages.

When we fitted our hall with the same boards at a later date he sourced it from Birmingham because they'd discontinued the colour. So can recommend.

Fred why not just get laminate in some rooms and keep carpets in others. Have a bit of both.

Actually we've just realised ours has been down for over 10 years and there is barely a scratch on it. So obviously the quality is a good as the brand made out at point of sale.

Intersting fact: the bloke who started mays carpets up is my mrs uncle

The quick stepstuff is very good. If your cottage is listed you mmight not be able to do this, but quick step also do matching skirting boards that are hollow and you can run all your cables through - top stuff.

We got ours put down for £100 by a carpenter who drinks in our local. As Si Pie says, not a scratch on it after 12 years.

it is listed but only grade 3 so no probs with internal stuff

Its a bit of a distance Fred but try Magic Carpets in Salisbury, i had my lounge and hallway done in solid oak and they did a fantastic job at a very good rate and the after sales is second to none, i thought about laminate but after seeing up against the proper stuff there was no contest

Shampooing carpets 3 times a week aint my idea of fun

Our downstairs is all ceramic tiles and we have two dogs - it becomes mesmerising watching the two of them chase each other cartoon stylee round the kitchen island complete with power slides!!!

At the same time if we had had carpets they would have lasted about 5 minutes - laminate/tiling is definitely the way forward...

I guess it has to be laminate/wood,  you're always moaning about the quality of the lino.
