I guess it's the metal shoes on the hooves which made the horses very susceptible to an electric cable on the turf but it makes you wonder about the stable-hands and jockeys. A close escape there! Title: Re: What's going on at Newbury Racecourse! Post by: shady on Saturday, February 12, 2011, 14:43:34 "The most terrifying noise I have heard outside of a cinema" according to Cornelius, Racing correspondent on Five Live, when referring to the noise the electrocuted horse made

Title: Re: What's going on at Newbury Racecourse! Post by: ronnie21 on Saturday, February 12, 2011, 19:05:34 I guess it's the metal shoes on the hooves which made the horses very susceptible to an electric cable on the turf but it makes you wonder about the stable-hands and jockeys. A close escape there! According to Channel 4 Racing the guys who covered the horses in the paddock certainly got electric shocks off the poor animals. They did run that race and when they got thehorses back to the stables some were reported as having burns in their mouths where the metal bit goes! Sad day.Title: Re: What's going on at Newbury Racecourse! Post by: shady on Saturday, February 12, 2011, 19:09:13 Bloody hell re: the burnt mouths! Very odd choice to run the race too.
Title: Re: What's going on at Newbury Racecourse! Post by: shady on Saturday, February 12, 2011, 19:15:32 According to horse experts, the shock a horse can withstand is only one sixth of what a human can withstand.
Anything over that is generally fatal. Title: Re: What's going on at Newbury Racecourse! Post by: Sussex on Saturday, February 12, 2011, 20:45:10 Just horrible.

Sad news....but this made me chuckle. Title: Re: What's going on at Newbury Racecourse! Post by: Rustle on Sunday, February 13, 2011, 11:31:25 I read on a racing forum that there were concerns from trainer that the main stand lights kept flickering on and off like disco lights around 1pm.
Title: Re: What's going on at Newbury Racecourse! Post by: shady on Sunday, February 13, 2011, 23:39:54 In horses the electric current in such circumstances travels up the back legs and down the front (going through the heart) whereas in humans it is up one leg down the other - unless someone is holding hands in which case it could be equally fatal as through the heart.

Why up the back legs rather than the front? Do horses have a dipole moment? Title: Re: What's going on at Newbury Racecourse!
