Wonder why O'Neil wasn't given that sort of money to spend? Unless they're selling a few players to finance it.

Gerard Houllier is a mentalist.

Why on earth would he go to Villa?

He's never worth that amount

That's nearly £50m in combined transfer fees in his career.

Is he really that good?

He's moved between Premiership teams, is English, relatively young and a goalscorer. All of those factors lead to inflated transfer values, he just has all of them so ends up looking a bit daft. Of course, if it's the difference between Villa staying up and going down then he's worth every penny, but Sunderland have a decent deal too: they have Gyan, Welbeck and Frazier Campbell in the position and can strengthen elsewhere with the money.

Alot of money for Sunderland to turn down, not to sure why why he would want to go though. Sunderland are 6th and with gyan and bent have got a very good chance of staying there while villa are struggling

To be fair that was on 5th Jan, when Sunderland were away at Villa.

It is a lot of money but he's got the track record at Premiership level. Only Drogba and Rooney have scored more since he made his prem debut, so i don't think it's an outrageous fee given the sort of money that's been spent on Milner, Glen Johnson etc in the last few years.

Why the fuck go to villa! I can only assume for money.

I cant make my mind up about Bent, the amount of chances he squanders is shocking, yet at the same time, he's always thereabouts on the leading scorers lists - so his presence clearly brings about chances.

Imagine if he was as clinical as an Owen or Shearer in their pomp, he'd be fucking lethal!

to be fair to him,he has scored shit loads of goals in the prem.
didn't work out for him at spurs, but everywhere else he has played he has banged them in regularly.

£18m for Bent should ruin Villa for a while.

What a dick. Sunderland got his career going again and now he wants to fuck off because Villa (who are much shitter than Sunderland may I add) have come calling. Sorry but this smells of more money to me. Just doesn't make sense.

It's the only thing I can think off that would make him want to leave.

To be honest i am suprised none of the bigger clubs are sniffing at that price....not a great footballer but scores for fun.

£18m for a 26 year old who is the 3rd highest prem scorer since 2005, sounds like a good deal to me.

Only Drogba and Rooney have scored more in that time and it's safe to say, based on the standard of their team mates, they have probably had more chances during that time.

...and Gary Glitter has applied for a season ticket. He's praying Otto Pfister takes over as manager.
