Title: Jobs Jobs Jobs
Post by: Power to people on Monday, November 1, 2010, 18:13:13
If anyone is aware of any IT Support positions out there then let me know, been told today that our office is being made redundant, not sure when from yet but probably sooner rather than later so I'm going to need a job to pay the bills !!

What are the best websites to look at these days ? I know jobserve don't know many others though

There's a curry house on Faringdon Road that uses this technique to fantastic effect, it looks like they've got loads of rave reviews but on closer inspection it's all a load of old bollocks. Sneaky Indians.

If she's good looking "do you take it in the mouth" normally would give you a good indication of whether you will get the job or not

Stuff about career growth (potential to progress, training etc). And as always, gen up on the company itself, and ask a question round that to show off what you've found out. e.g. "I see you've recently expanded into Asia/gained a new round of investment/been implicated in a series of horrific workplace deaths.....". If they're a startup/small company try and find out if they've got funding in place and a business plan to help them weather the recession. Oh, and "Your finance director's not called Sandy Gray is she?"

Interview lined up for today  - and I sort of know the CEO of the company, not sure if that is a help or a hindarance though, may have to drop it into conversation though

My boss and I have been interviewing recently and the two things we found the candidates slipped up on or were not properly prepared for was a) What their weaknesses were and b) What their goals were.

Also, try not to digress on questions as we were incredibly frustrated with one girl as she just went on and on!

Good Luck though!

I like to answer the "what are your goals/ambitions?" or "where do you see yourself in 5 years time?" questions as follows:

I see myself doing a great job, realising I could get a higher profile and better paid positon with a rival firm and fucking off to them. In fact, I'm only gunning for this job so I have something snazzy to put down on my CV.

It works every time.

Didn't get the job.

I went for an interview many years ago and the pretentious cunt who interviewed me said "what do you think of this as a question". I asked him to clarify the question and he refused to do so. I told him I thuoght it was a complete bollox question and unsurprisingly didn't get the job.

Well I didn't get that one so it's back to pushing the CV out to agency's and job websites, although I thought I had an excellent chance and came away thinking it was going to be offered to me.

It is so frustrating though, I want to be able to walk out of this place on the friday and have a job on the monday so I don't need to use my redundancy and keep it in the bank

I generally found the ones I thought I'd breezed, I didn't get an offer whereas the ones I thought I'd ballsed up I did. Except a couple I made a right dog's breakfast of.

Not going to happen. And worth taking the time to find a decent job, think of it as an investment in yourself.

Speaking of jobs, I'm writing a CV now, boring as. It's always hard to write about yourself. My work history is pretty minimal (only had 1 job) so I've decided to list all my educational achievements first.. Get their hopes up before the miserable 2nd page.

you could do yourself out of potential employment with a comment like that.

And therein my friend lies the problem. You see when you get old enough to understand what I'm driving at you'll have forgottent this post.

I would shovel shit to keep the roof over my families head, put food in their stomachs, clothes on their backs and pay for heating not forgetting the mortgage. Life you'll learn eventually is cruel and it and no-one owes you anything. Welcome to the real world my parents and their parents had as the norm. Life is 6/4 against with no central heating, no double glazing and fridges that mysteriously are always full at all times of the day, night, week and month. Sky sports as the norm and games consoles coming out of your ears. Etc, etc.
.
Maybe I sound like you mum and dad but then I'm more than old enough to be them, well your dad anyway.

Good luck with your life, you'll need it as will my kids.

I work at the ice rink but only on Saturdays! In the week its dead weekends it horrendously busy - its such a rip off at weekends - try and come before the 21st as the prices go up again!
When do you wanna go?
Thank you for the heads up. Last year we went on the Sunday afternoon and it was nice a quiet but it was raining a bit. If its been that busy at weekends though we would prefer an evening session. I'll have a look at the times and go across to book if the site is still not letting me book online. I'll be needing one of those seals to hold onto  :)

You don't know what an accountant does, do you?

Accountancy recruitment agencies. There are plenty out there. No, I won't answer questions about which is best etc.

I agree with Samdy's take on this.

Michael Page seem to pick up most of the opportunities out in the market place.

What a fab job.  I love the bit under additional info:

Must be excited about water slides, comfortable wearing swimwear and willing to get wet at work.

Is/was that where you work(ed) JTR? I think I need to fire my CV off, I haven't applied for a job for 13 years but my CV is up to date.

Michael Page are the most active of the agencies for this sector. That said, I didn't find my new job through them in the end.

You should also use Robert Half and Hays.  As Si Pie says, they are the mass-market types. It depends on what level you're at as t whether it's worth looking at some of the smaller agencies.

Other then the above agencies mentioned, does anyone know where my wife could find some jobs in accounting, she's fully qualified at AAT and studying towards her ACCA and would like some work in Swindon so she doesn't have to commute to Bristol everyday.

What's her experience in? Accountancy practice or industry?

There are very few vacancies which don't get picked up by the aforementioned agencies.

It's industry/finiacial services as she works for Lloyds.

she's been doing investment reporting.

Years ago (and I'm going back a long time now), Threadneedle Asset Management - the investment arm of Zurich Financial Services - had a base in Swindon.  But I couldn't tell you whether they still do.  I'd hazard a guess that there is more investment reporting work in Bristol than in Swindon.

Worth bumping this up, anyone who is/knows any recent graduates who are looking for a role in the West starting relatively soon (I know it's a weird time to hire grads), my company is hiring for our business analysis training scheme based in Bath.

Do you actually check if people finished their degree? I'm cheap and well clever. And hit all the other criteria. I got like 2/3rds of a degree.

Yeah HR are pretty reliable at checking, but a decent covering letter explaining the situation + some work experience may be enough.

I wouldn't mention manatees though.

That was in homage to your previous laissez faire attitude regarding becoming a useful member of society, instead of a drunken waste of space.
