For a nation as big as the USA it is strange to think that only one soldier ever has been executed for desertion since the US civil war....obviously many more have been sent to there deaths with regard rape and murder etc. In fact it puts the UK to shame when you think of the hundreds of our own soldiers we shot during WW1 for desertion. Eddie himself when being readied for death saw it as gods retribution for the stealing he did as a lad......... For the US military it is probably a minor thing they see as probably getting wrong.............for Eddie Slovik and his family it probably means eternal shame.
