Definitely, good that we scored 2 goals as well.  I think we were all a bit concerned about scoring any with Austin out.

On a side note, Charlie Austin is at Newbury Races today dressed in a David Beckham manner (according to my brother).  His dress sense is largely irrelevant, but I'm surprised he didn't travel with the team to watch even though he is injured?

To be honest Joteddyred i think a break will do him good,silly as it seems if we can get some results without Austin he will come back fresh and raring to go.
Its been a heady last 9 months or so for him and for me has looked a touch jaded.
I get your point though but maybe DW has told him to have a break...and lets be honest we couldn't begrudge him that after his efforts since joining us.

Hope this is the start (well, second game) of a nice little run.  We hit our stride in October last year.  Hopefully we're doing the same again now, just a month earlier.

It's also good to hear that we took three points without really playing to our full potential...mark of a side that could go on to do well.

Just got in (following a detour through central Birmingham, thanks Dad). Thought we played very well for most of the game but looked nervous when Walsall had sustained periods of posession. My only concern was that we didn't put the game out of sight before they equalised. We spurned too many chances that we need to take to continue this winning run (2 games is a run, seriously) and without Austin up front I'm a little worried.

Official site says we took 853 - seemed like a hell of a lot more than that.

Great to hear one of the first texts read out after the game was from someone who moaned on about how we didnt take our chances in the first half and it nearly cost us, we need a decent striker ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Dosevvi missed a 1-on-1, Pericard booted the rebound straight over the bar, they missed a free header and Prutton wasn't shit.

That's the game summed up. for the second, wicked strike by sheehan straight into Pericards path, lovely. The goal meant something to him too. VP was a bit lazy though. Ball doesn't have a left foot, so why play him on the left?

Oh, and some idiot tried to sneak a drum into the away end..Nice stewards told him to do one almost immediately. Someone shoot him.

Just got back. First half we were superb and unlucky not to be leading by more. Second half was completely different, and we slowly started sitting on the lead, especially after Tommy missed a glorious chance. There goal was coming, and was a good finish. Lucas kept them out for a while, then out of nowhere Vinny pops up with the winner.

Lucas was outstanding for the most part, some top saves. He might come under criticism for the goal, but not for me. I think he done superbly with the first two saves and was unlucky in the end.

Back four were solid. The 2 young CBs were incredible. I'll be the first to admit I didn't think Morrison had enough about him to perform at this level or above long term but he's is imperious at the moment. Sheehan was my MOM, looked great going forward and solid defensively and linked up well with Prutton. Kev was the weakest of the back four, and looked a bit suspect at times but as a unit they were solid.

Prutts was a lot better, and probably his best performance in red. Got pulled about a little bit at times, as did Caddis but that was probably down to the shape more than anything. Dougie was a monster, and one tackle between the goals changed the momentum back our way, got the fans and players pumped after a quiet 15 mins leading to their goal.

Dossevi was the best player on the park in the first half but never left the changing room at HT and missed a one on one. Vince is improving every game, and deserved his goal. Finally starting to look at home. The hold up play and link up play with the midfield was superb from both strikers at times.

All in all, they put us under a lot of pressure at times but we were good defensively and nicked a winner, a decent away performance and we're starting to look much better.

Drum proliferation is a serious worry.

Played far too narrow at times, gave Walsall's albino winger tonnes of space... fortunately he couldn't cross the ball otherwise we'd have had some serious problems.

Still areas to improve in, but considering 2 weeks ago we hadn't won a game, I think we're all probably chuffed to have now won home and away and looking far better as a team.

The other obvious thing so far is that everyone in League 1 is beatable and the division seems fairly open.  I know we're only 7 games in, but there's only 5 points between top and us in 13th.  Nobody has exactly looked like they are good enough to run away with it.  Next week will be a big test.  If we get 3 points I think we really will be capable of pushing on and matching last season's form.

The first half an hour we were superb i would go as far as saying the football was b etter than anything we even produced last season.

We looked suspect for the first 20 mins of the 2nd half but as i said on the way back if we were 1 down at half time i would expect us to go about it like walsall did.In any away game we will no doubt be under pressure.

Pericard worked his bollocks off today and that was pruttons best game for us. Most pleasing thing for me was Douglas,he was superb and looked back to what we expect.

Back now after a trip to a Harvester for a bite to eat.

Anywho, the M5/6 was a bit slow on the way up but the day got better after the nice bloke on the turnstyle let me lift my 6 year old son over the said turnstyle because "he wasn't going to charge him £14" :) Probably will turn out under 10's were free or something but don't spoil the illusion of a good Samaritan turn style operator!

Before the game I saw a lad enter the away end dressed a a giant penis. Was it a bet, a forfeit, a stag weekend. I don't know.

At the start of the game we dominated, scored an early goal and should have had two or three in the first half. It looked like (I think) Dossevi scooped one over from fully 3 yards.  At the other end Lucas had one or two save and I remember their centre forward Barker  (or was it Baker) missing a sitter of a header.

At half time I went to the toilet and some strange bloke started talking to me about the Pope.

Second half we created a couple of chances. Would have been a few more if Amankwha could cross (!), but slowly but surely we sat back. Lucas made a good double save but seemed to punch the third one that from the other end of the ground looked easier to catch. 1-1. After that Walsall I think hit the post and made a penalty claim r three that I was sure the dick of a ref would give. But he didn't, so maybe he wasn't all bad.

The winner came from a shot that to me looked like it hit Pericard and went in. Some will say he played it, but I need to see proof on the football league show before holding that belief.  Who cares 2-1.

On performances. Lucas made some excellent saves. Morrison continues to make me look a twat ("not good enough", well he is so far! ). Prutton was excellent in left midfield. Sheehan looked like a proper left back. Douggie is getting bac to form. Caddis has a good cross and did OK. Bit disappointed with Manks. Cuthbert was probably not as good as Morrison today, but put an excellent last ditch boot on a certain Walsall goal. Didn't think the front two were quite on the pace (literally) yes still caused problems.

Great result. Perhaps a tad fortunate in the end with those missed chances and the nature of the winner. But 3 points it is!

I know quite a few refs and a couple are now football league linesmen so working their way up, but they sum up what I believe is wrong with refereeing in this country. Basically at no stage in their life have they ever played a competitive football match be it sunday league, at school or anything. The ones I know from school were rubbish at sport and never even tried to play football, they just took up refereeing as they get a bit of a power trip from it and was something to do. This in turn means there is a general lack of fitness amongst match officials especially when it comes linesman.
Most referees seem to have a knowledge of the rules but not a knowledge of the actual game which is why you get such daft decisions week in week out. Somehow they need to get people who have some experience playing football to become officials, but the problem is using myself as an example when I'm not watching Swindon I play on Saturdays and every Sunday I play Sunday league footy so even if I wanted to I wouldn't have time to take it up and thats the same for the majority of people who play.
It's a fairly complex problem and fuck knows how you solve it but it needs to be fixed as it's getting to the stage at the moment where referee decisions are becoming a lottery.

Great day and we are getting better all the time. Good performance today. I also saw the man dressed as a penis, must have been a dare.

We dominated first half, should have had more than one goal, we passed the ball well and the movement was good. Second half we sat back and invited the pressure, and there goal had been coming for a while, but i was pleased with how we responed, and i think we deserved the win.

Lucas was immense today, imo not at fault for the goal at all, had done well to keep out the previous two. Made some cracking saves and it is always up for some banter with the crowd which i love. When the Walsall player blasted a free kick over the bar he turned around and started going 'what was that'. Ace.

Back four were solid, Kev got caught a few times over the top but looked good going forward. Morrison and Cuthbert were immense, rocks for the whole game, won pretty much everything in the air. Scotty had Macken in his pocket all game.

Sheenan - MOM - Absoulutley brilliant today, could turn out to be a great signing. Constantly a threat going forward, his delivery is great and he took his goal brilliantly. He also looked very strong at the back.

Midfield - I liked the formation today, i thought it worked well. Prutton had his best game in a town shirt, looked good on the ball and found a pass most of the time. Dougie was ace today, an absolute rock, got the ball and gave it, great performance. Caddis and JPM were quiet but still did a good job.

Dossevi played really well today, held up the ball and worked really hard, he missed a few chances but still had a good game. Ohhh Pericard! He is definatley improving, but is still lacking that edge, but i think that will come in time. The goal is bound to give him confidence, even if he did know nothing about it. He also looked a fair way offside.

Was impressed today, we looked more like the town of last year, passed and moved reallly well.

I was queing right behind the tosser with the drum and was well chuffed when the steward told him it weren't coming in althugoh someone did call me a miserable bastard to which I readily agreed.
The game itself should have been wrapped up within the first thirty - we were quite simply superb. Fiar play to Walsall thuogh they played the ball on the ground and played some good stuff at times -without a cutting edge. 
Can't believe there were 4580 there but only 853 Town fans. More like 3500 with about 1200 of us.

Quite a few good points in there, but obviously when you have retired from playing you will have the time. I tend to think and I try not to think too often, that the mistakes will happen due to the human element, no one is perfect.
Also if the refs never made a mistake, and perhaps video evidence was introduced it would kill a certain part of the enjoyment of the game, ie not give us so many talking points afterwards to winge about. Refs are human, but as far as decisions go you win a few and you lose a few and I'm pretty sure by the law of averages they do even themselves out over a season. Crap argument I know but it's the best I can come up with, we will get a few decisions that we don't deserve

So you want referees who have played semi-pro football. Probably stop playing late 20's. Obviously, going into refereeing for the first time then, and stepping through the ranks within 5 years. Straight onto the Football League because they have the experience of playing at a 'high' level. But he'd be about 35, fat, slow and what we have now? Really, have a think about it before you say anything. Who was the last referee who got dumped in the deep end, and how's that been for football - ghost goals, dubious red cards, hot-headed tackles flying on constantly, pretty sure he gave us a goal last season too when it should've been offside - we loved him for that. Atwell, by the way.

You can't say things like 'they know the rules, but have no grasp of the game' because 1) they aren't rules, they're laws, and 2) it's like telling a copper 'oh let me off that speeding ticket, i was only 3mph over' - you can't bend the laws. A referee has one thing on his side, and that is his opinion. Several things are mandatory (many referees don't agree with them, but each has to apply them for some sort of consistency) other than those small things, it's his opinion. He has one angle, and he can't move to the perfect position within a moment a pass has been made - what he sees, he gives. He can't help it when a player runs across his view, and may only see the ankle's being taken and not the ball. The referee can't see through players, so the blind side is very hard to judge. A referee's fitness should not be questioned. Fergie did it last season with Wiley...turned out Wiley ran more than most of his players. As for linesman, if these guys could run as quick as the defenders/attackers, you'd be asking 'why didn't they take up football/athletics etc etc'. People should really keep their mouths shut about the refereeing standards until they've done a few (or maybe just one) Sunday morning pub game - how the refs are treated superbly, eh...

As for todays 3, Guy other end of the pitch to us, no complaints. The lino near us, one problem - Cuthberts Booking. How the fuck could he give that free kick when he should've been watching the players around the ball, for the ball to go out/foul. The ref, did an ok job. Tried to play advantage for them at the end of the first half, didn't lead anywhere so brought it back - it's what he's trained to do. I wouldn't be suprised if some referees thought Dougies sarcy clap was insulting, resulting in a red. Maybe wasn't in the best position for some of the corners, so couldn't see shirt pulls, but it's a crowded penalty area, 'seeing through players' springs to mind. Should've booked one of theirs for that hard tackle on VP, but he didn't make a big deal out of anything, and the end of the first half was a few minor things happening in a short space of time. I was smiling because i knew he hadn't done anything wrong, but i was still giving him shit.

Two seasons ago against Hereford - and in defensive of Atwell he had a good game and clearly looked towards his linesman who didnt flag. It was the linesman that fucked up, not Atwell in this instance.

the best refs i've had in games i've played in have all been ex players.
some ex pro's but all to a decentish standard.
doesn't make it 100% a need,but i reckon it helps.
i see alot of young-inexperienced refs trying to make their way by doing kids matches.some of them have clearly no idea of the game and only the laws(often that is questionable too)and they ruin the matches.
i've seen one idiot who kept stopping the game unless the player named himself everytime he wanted the ball.
i think a fair few refs are too shit to play(to even a local league standard) but love the game so ref instead.

Wasn't there, all i heard was a shocking decision was made. Was put across to me that Attwell (given his past) made a booboo. Just makes stronger the case for a referee having a good game, but one bad decision by his lino could leave him hung and dry - even the assessors go by this which is what is wrong. A good referee coming through could have a fantastic season, but some old fart assessor sees his assistant making a mistake will mark the whole team down, resulting in the better referees being scuppered for something they've not done. That side of refereeing needs sorting out.

Referees themselves, the ones trying to go far, give everything during a game. You ask them, it's a lottery to what assessor you get given because they can make or break promotion. But the management they get is shit. The help & support they are given by some county FAs is shit. The referees going through use up a lot of their time for nothing but hope of reaching professional games - the level below Conference, i think, would mean a referee being away from home for 8-12 hours, doing 150 miles round trip, at the end of a working week, for £30-£40, you'd say they are stupid.


Well, your last point is probably common-law in a referee chat - because some idiot decided to mention 'you must call your name' each player wants a free-kick when a name isn't called, and when said young inexperience gives a free-kick, they want it the following week too. That's also one of the mandatory booking though, if someone shouts something which the referee could deem 'offputting' to an opponent and he gives a free kick, he has to caution too - often the young(er) ones don't so cause problems.

Personally, i've never played about U12's. Was kicked out of 2 or 3 teams for being a cunt, and decided to referee for the money (it was good when you were 14 - got you £75 a weekend). But i've been told  recently i've got a future in football, there's hope yet! i just won't be allowed to referee Swindon, Oxford, Bristol or Reading...Sorry.

Thought it started off as a diamond with prutton on the left and Caddis and McGovern switching over.

Best i have seen the midfield this season.Bit shit when we are under the cosh as it leaves the fullbacks exposed but to give him his due Wilson changed that when it became a issue

I don't understand why it's so long for Wilson to put Prutton on the left, diamond or not - it's seemed obvious to me since we got Ferry in. Prutton is a quality player and we just need to get the best out of him, once we do that we'll have one of the strongest midfields in the division.

There really is no reason for the full backs to be exposed when playing a diamond, if everyone is doing their job. Probably more just a case of them getting used to it and I'm sure they'll get better and better over time.

Nice touch from Vince for his goal, pity he's always too knackered to chase the ball down.  Dossevi I thought was poor, seemed to want to take the ball past three oppo players, usually failed after the second.

would have been less nervy if we'd put the game out of sight with some of the chances in the first 30.  Still, thought there was some promise there today, need to build on that.

Nice to get the win and a good turn out by our fans i recon there was more of us than them! I thought we dominated the first half and could have been 4-0 up, Sheehan made a big difference today and after that performance he surely won his place back. That was fun. First game of the season and a win - yay. Probably deserved it with the chances we had - notably Dossevi's 3 and Morrison's header.

A fucking good performance today, and we deserved the win.

Not going to pick out individuals playing against a fairly mediocre side that will probably struggle this season, but we do look a lot better than we did in our earlier matches.

With Austin and Ferry missing, the lads did well.

Sheenans goal was well worked, and pericards goal was a nice instinctive finish.

Brilliant day all round.

First half some of our play was superb, almost back to the standard of last season during the first half an hour and the lead should have been greater. Walsall came into the game as the half went on and had a few opportunities, through Macken especially. We rode our luck a hell of a lot in the second half and for me Lucas was MoM. Think Walsall will feel like they should have taken something from the game, they had a fair few chances of their own. Our second killed them, massively against the run of play although we looked dangerous every time we attacked.

Overall a perfect away day win, winning matches like that make all the difference at the end of the season. Thought Sheehan, Pericard, Cuthbert and Morrison were brilliant today. Amankwaah a tad shaky, and McGovern quiet again. Prutton was better, showed some classy touches, and Douglas was back to his old self.

Hopefully we've built a platform to build upon now.

Walsall remind me of ourselves a few seasons back in terms of the club in general. You can tell they're going through tough times. Soulless pit springs to mind.

Pretty much echo what most have said already. First half we played some lovely stuff in large parts, Dossevi has all the skill and intelligence to be a fantastic player for us, just hope yesterday was an off day for him in front of goal. Morrison is immense and has made the centre back position his, won everything yesterday. Prutton was very good and has started to show what Wilson saw in him. VP was very good and was a constant problem for Walsall.

No real poor performances apart from Big Kev, who looks like he's suffering a dip in form this season.

Another 3 points, although we'll need to improve even more if we're to finish in the top 6.

Might explain why people are saying we had more than 850 odd, sound's like their guy let loads in for nothing.

Forgotten how rubbish the ref was. The rediculous booking for Douglas was the only downside of the whole day. I did enjoy it when one of their central midfielders tried to mix it with Douglas and ended up in a crippled heap.

When youve got your full backs comming forward, making and scoring goals, you know the teams heading in the right direction. Thats what we missed in the first 3 or 4 games. Sheehan was fantastic yesterday, Caddis would do well to watch and learn.

A few things about the game yesterday:

Pericard and Dossevi helped out in midfield a lot yesterday but also sat too deep at times as a result. I thought we looked a little better with Ball out on the left which left Pericard to spend more time up front looking for space.

Caddis was a more than capable replacement for Ferry considering he's a wide player, I felt that he offered a bit more width at times as well.

Amankwaah looks really out of sorts, short on confidence and is a bit of a weak link at the moment.

Sheehan made a massive difference. He was always there as an outlet for Morrison and Cuthbert, thus eliminating the hoofball problem of last weekend and was giving vocal guidance to Sean as well. Factor in his attacking ability and we looked like we had some real width despite playing the diamond again. No signs of any lack of fitness either.

McGovern is still wasted in the hole.

JP is one of my fave players but he barely figured yesterday. As you say, SY he's wasted in the hole. He should be on the right of the diamond.

Could be because of all the rumours concerning new signings (Macnamee, Quinn etc) being in his position causing him some unrest that hes about to be replaced.

Alternately he may just be off form!

P.S. spoke to my Cardiff season ticket holding mate yesterday about Quinn who says hes fast, can tackle and can read the game well....but.....every time he gets the ball he hoofs it upfield, says hes unsettled at Cardiff so the rumours may well be true, not sure if he sounds like the player we need with his distribution though.

Great day out yesterday, even the wife loved it (the football that is). She nearly started on the people around us as they wouldn't stop moaning.

I've been slagging him all season but you're absolutely right, he was excellent yesterday. Worked very well alongside Douglas and fulfilled his defensive duties admirably. If he continues in that vein and pops up with a few goals, he'll be a massive asset.

Maybe Wilson has persisted with Prutton for the long term benefits, knowing he'd come good with game time.

Vincent Pericard nearly killed my son!

We were right at the back of the stand right behind the goal. Safe enough you'd think, but Vince decided to Sabin one in the warm up. He hits 'em bloody hard, thankfully he missed him by a couple of inches!
