Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Doore on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:43:16 It would be a sideways move, won't happen, if it does I will be apoplelctic(?) with rage :( I wasn't aware that the Championship and League One were on a par. I wouldn't have been so disappointed in May had I known. Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:44:00 In terms of ambition, it would be sideways, terms of relative stature.
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Nemo on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:44:56 Oh come on, I don't like Millwall at all, but they're a bigger club than us in every way. Whether they're the limit of ambition for Charlie is another point entirely.
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Doore on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:45:39 Shady, good sir, you are talking out of your arse.
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: glos_robin on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:46:07 In terms of ambition, it would be sideways, terms of relative stature. But gets an instant stab at championship football whereas at present with us it could be a relegation battle in league 1 at this rate.Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Spencer_White on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:46:20 Oh come on, I don't like Millwall at all, but they're a bigger club than us in every way. Whether they're the limit of ambition for Charlie is another point entirely. Very simmilar club in terms of history. Except weve won a major trophy and they never have. But yes they do have a better fanbase than us at the moment, and are a league above us. But in every way? Dont think so. Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:47:19 They have started very well this season to be fair to them
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:48:02 Do you really think they surpass us in scale, not by much for sure, we're a sleeping giant who can tap into The Cotswolds when our fortunes improve. The Savernake forest hinterlands are plump with potential support.
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:49:39 As Spencer says. our roll of glory speaks volumes, League Cup Winners, what have they got, an ignominious UEFA departure against Ferencvaros is just about it!
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: tans on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:49:58 Sorry but sleeping giant?
Am i missing something? Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: glos_robin on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:50:25 we're a sleeping giant Oh don't talk daftTitle: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:51:30 Look at the crowds we used to pull, there is a great deal of apathy out there in Wiltshire, which could easily be swung by a glory season.
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Doore on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:51:53 All clubs, bar the top few, fluctuate through time. At the moment though, moving from us to Millwall is not a sideways step. It's clearly a forward step, career wise. I really hope he doesn't go. If he does, I hope he escapes the "cunt judas" treatment that often gets meted out on here.

Take a look at our attendances in the Premiership .......... there is nothing giant about us. This league and the bottom half of the championship possibly is our natural home. We'll never ever get an average attendance much over 10,000.Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: BANGKOK RED on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:53:50 we're a sleeping giant Fucking ace Personally, I reckon that we are similar in size to Millwall. They have a greater reputation, but not for the right reasons. I can't wait for this to hit the thisis news section. Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Spencer_White on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:55:55 Look at the crowds we used to pull, there is a great deal of apathy out there in Wiltshire, which could easily be swung by a glory season. The apathy round here is deeply entrenched. As for Millwall, they only get the crowds they do now because of saturation Policing. Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:57:50 I seriously think we'd pull in the region of 14,000-17,000 fans if we teetered in the upper echelons of the Championship. We're a serious team to be contended with. Millwall might be marginally bigger but lets not split hairs, and like Billy says, they're rather tarnished.
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:58:57 Spencer is right, those coppers swell the numbers, and you hget all sorts of hangers-on, latching onto the aggro, at The New Den.
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Doore on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 10:59:31 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4oQTUv37nU Luton and Oxford have won that competition since we did. Perhaps its not a great marker of a club's current status. Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:01:55 We did win the Anglo Italian as well.

We couldnt even sell out in the Premiership ffs Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:04:09 I'm pretty sure our avaerage was above 13,000 in 93/94
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Doore on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:04:22 We did win the Anglo Italian as well. Man Utd never have. Someone ought to tell Rooney. Come on shady, even you can't seriously believe what you are typing. Anyway, get it back on topic - lets hope it is an offer we can refuse. Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: Doore on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:05:16 I'm pretty sure our avaerage was above 13,000 in 93/94 Which meant about 13,000 empty seats in a small premier league ground. Giants indeed. Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:05:37 Alright Billy, just a bit petrified that we'll lose Charlie, trying to revive my flagging spirit. Guess I talked us up a bit much, but you got to have faith.

Guess I talked us up a bit much, but you got to have faith. I don't think any of us want to lose him. Imagine what Dave would do... Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:09:21 I watched that Oxford Anglo-Italian vido Billy, and it rather surprised me by how muted our support was in celebrating the goals, i'd be going completely nuts.
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: RedRag on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:21:19 Well I don't agree with all this talking the club down
For a start we used to get in the high teens in '69 in the same league we are in now. Irrelevant, then why go back to the Premiership days and compare the first season to now? Lets looks at facts: Milwall, newly promoted, good start, 11,000 for Coventry City. Big eh? What would we have got for that fixture had Charlie not got a bobble and the lads had stuck the penalties away? Chelsea? about five times more yesterday than our lwoest home league gate of the season. OK they ARE bigger than us. God help us if Fitton had the same outlook as some of you - we've had some bloody lean years but show some belief, pride and hope. Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:24:22 Well said Red Rag, watched a documentary about us in the late 60s 0r early 70s and the crowds we pulled were incredible, but I guess people didn't have the same distractions we do these days.
Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: RedRag on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:57:58 Well said Red Rag, watched a documentary about us in the late 60s 0r early 70s and the crowds we pulled were incredible, but I guess people didn't have the same distractions we do these days. they were different times, still a bit of a railway town, less distractions and less people new to the town supporting other teams and less armchair fans. My point is that Milwall are not obviously bigger than us (a load of cockney day trippers at their "home" game at Wembley slightly outnumbering us and an average crowd in excess of 10,000 last year compared to our's of 8,000 or so) and that with some vision and investment and a little success we (like other clubs) could become a very distinctive Championship club again. As you say if we could only tap into the Cotswolds and Savernake Forest hinterlands, we could become a real powerhouse of the game - move over geordies and scousers. We are very lucky to have a local star like Charlie and I hope he can go on and make a name for himself at a bigger club but there's some work to do here first and Milwall isn't that club - they wouldn't have the money and I didn't hear Morrison was being offered as a makeweight. Title: Millwall bid for Austin Post by: shady on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 12:04:44 Yep, RedRag, it would be a crying shame if he left, really fear for us languishing in obscurity for a great many years, but things change very quickly. Guess I was spoilt by our second tier lofty achievements.

sideways move my arse. Title: Re: Millwall bid for Austin aka The Sleeping Giant thread Post by: RedRag on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 13:07:46 I agree our history is irrelevant.
When Charlie does leave I would rather he left for somewhere a little more big time than Milwall - even to resume with Billy Paynter for example or perhaps better still go somewhere like Southampton or Norwich. Batch's fear that Milwall's bid might flush out some more attractive bids is on the money for me. Time as ever will tell. I haven't given up on a fairytale return to Wembley and Charlie taking a new contract when we are promoted, sad I know, but there you are.
