Full credit to young Amir, he's been brilliant, but the way we're batting it's like we've never batted in difficult conditions before. This is embarrassing.

Broad is Quality...good bowler, always been a decent bat.........and has a spark about him.
That spark equates to passion about playing for England.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I can't stand the "new Botham" headlines.

Broad could be the new flintoff

Title: Re: 4th Test
Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Friday, August 27, 2010, 19:55:24
He's not a Botham or a Flintoff. But what I think he is is exactly what we have missed down the years. A number 8/9 bowler who can bat. He's not a powerhouse or a big hitter like Freddy but he's a good technical batsman and with the ball he's been getting better year upon year. Strikes me as a bit of a Dominic Cork type player but obviously a little bit better than Corky was.

New Botham...New Flintoff...New Dominic Cork.

All going downhill here. New Mark Ealham!

Funny thing is he's probably closer to an Aussie bowler.  They can usually bat a bit, look at all the runs that Warne scored over the years, and you wouldn't have classed him as an all rounder

I recall the last test that an England number 9 scored a ton...1966...the best bit though was that nos 10 and 11 John Snow and Ken Higgs both got 50's.  We had been drubbed though by the Windies....never seen anything like it since. Yesterday was good  :)

He's also beaten his dad's highest ever test score and he was an opening batsman.

Well, somehow we managed to claw our way to a very decent total. Top stuff from Broad and Trott. Really looking forward to seeing the highlights later. Hopefully it'll inspire the top of the order to value their wickets a bit more in the next innings.

It is not match fixing, but some thing to do with "no balls" that will not really effect the outcome.  But still that is pretty shit.

Title: Re: 4th Test
Post by: Nemo on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 00:34:00
Has no real effect on this game, but if proved I think Pakistan could be in deep, deep trouble. ICC will no doubt come down hard on Pakistan, not least because of the Indian influence there.

If one team wins/loses by one run it effects the game massively!

When blatant no balls are bowled on cue I don't think suspicion is the right word. I know you're innocent until proven guilty but in this case those bowlers are guilty. Not sure how Pakistan can take the field, it'll just be a farce if they do.

Pakistan (well, the two batsmen anyway) are coming out. You've got to think there'll be a bit of tension between the 7 who are supposedly involved and the rest.

send them home. The ones that the Police let leave that is. No point in this ODI series whatsoever.

Weve put them up this summer, hosting their test matches. Not much of a reward for the ECB.

Pretty obvious a lot of shit has been going on for years. Pretty obvious the ICC has been intent on sweeping it under the carpet (as with the ball tampering forfeit). This time they need to be outcast.

That's not the cricket team's fault though and the selfish actions of two individuals (if proved to be true blah blah blah) shouldn't impact on the whole side.

Those found guilty, however, ought to be thrown out of the game for life.

Problem is that the NOTW story doesn't implicate two individuals, it implicates seven, including the Captain and both opening bowlers. That's a big chunk of the side.

Title: Re: 4th Test
Post by: sonicyouth on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 12:40:10
Really? I'd read that only Amir and Asif were implicated... my mistake.

Even so it would punish the young Pakistani players who aren't involved

Title: Re: 4th Test
Post by: Summerof69 on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 13:03:13
There has been speculation about Pakistani cricket for years, in terms of match fixing.

I still say their World Cup game in '99 against Bangladesh was fixed. In fact, before the game I said to one of my work colleagues at the time that we should go down to the bookies and put money on Bangladesh, despite them not winning a game, and Pakistan unbeaten, because it was a 'dead' game as Pakistan was through to the 'Super Eights' and Bangladesh was out. Bangladesh made 100 more runs than any other time in the tournament, and they won by 50 odd runs

Due to that result, Bangladesh won Test status, which they still don't deserve.

Title: Re: 4th Test
Post by: Spencer_White on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 19:17:21
I think one of the no balls was right at the turning point of the game, when Broad and Trott went on to make their record partnership.

All of which is totally irrelevant anyway. Any deliberate manipulation of play for money that is proven should be an immediate life ban.

Title: Re: 4th Test
Post by: suttonred on Sunday, August 29, 2010, 19:27:37
I'm actually wondering If something wasn't "fixed" when we were 100 odd for 7, what were the odds on an England win? Must have been massive.

Title: Re: 4th Test
Post by: Spencer_White on Monday, August 30, 2010, 07:28:53
Yep, and that fixer as good as admitted the remarkable 'jaws of victory' defeat to Australia in Sydney was a fix, they received £1.3 million to lose.

He said they were planning to lose 2 ODI internationals. Ive no doubt that if the News of the World had put up £1m they could have got Pakistan to throw one of the upcomming 1 day international.

This sort of thing is very difficult to prove. Its the best proof weve ever had, and these 7 players need to banned for life. I will never ever pay to watch Pakistan play again myself.

I agree Spencer. I think Mikey Holding's response on Sky thinks they are banged to rights. I think the pictures are pretty damning, with the 'fixer' saying the balls which will be no-balls, and the fact that the bowlers were way over, making sure they were no-balls, especially with the commentators comments at the time.

Pakistan's batting performances during the Test series were woeful. England have bowled them out for 72,72 and 80 during this Test series, and without Akmal's innings yesterday, they would've had another sub-100 innings, which is woeful for a senior Test playing nation.

If I was the ICC, I would also look into the Pakistan v Aussie test match a few months ago also. They were serenely 100-2 chasing around 400, and they collapsed due to the might of Marcus North's part time bowling, who Anderson and Panesar easily faced at Cardiff last year.

Title: Re: 4th Test
Post by: Spencer_White on Monday, August 30, 2010, 17:31:47
To be honest I should say I was at the Oval test match when Pakistan forfeited that game. And the subsequent farce involving changing the result really put me off paying to watch Pakistan.

Test match tickets are extremely expensive now and the British public deserve better than this.

People have said this could destroy cricket in Pakistan for 2 generations and we cant afford to lose another test playing nation. I dont give a shit.

Remmember their loss to Ireland in the world cup? hmmmmm!

Remmember their loss to Ireland in the world cup? hmmmmm!

I don't think the game in '07 against the Irish was thrown, as the game was played on a seamer friendly pitch, which levelled the playing field, but as I said previously, there is no doubt in my mind that the games against Bangladesh in '99 was thrown.

There is no doubt that this will affect attendances at any matches involving Pakistan. Who in their right mind will pay upwards of £100 if they think the game is fixed. Counties are already counting the cost this summer due to the low attendances, as they now have to bid for international matches with the ECB, and the counties have to get that money back somehow. Who is in their right mind going to bid to hold a game against Pakistan?
