Title: Ben Tozer
Post by: Chubbs on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, 11:10:26
Following on from the Lukas J thread...

Ben Tozer (the CB we sold to Newcastle for £1mil) Is on trial at Leyton Orient.

Another case of moving on too early?

I allways thought he'd do a good job at swindon.

We never got £1m for him. We might have done if he was in the England squad

And I never thought he looked any good, Morrison has always looked better to me.

I think we got a couple of hundred grand for him, with the rest based on appearances, etc.

The last deal done by a desperate board...

I never really rated Tozer but what do I know? Several clubs in the Premier League rated him.

Did you come to that conclusion after his full 2 starts and  sub appearances for us then?

Hell yes

Not sure bigger clubs did fancy him.  It seems to me that any player appearing in the lower leagues attracts a lot of attention from the Premiership.  They seem desperate to stop any talent going to one of their rivals & snap them up, 'develop' them but never give them meaningful game time in the first team.  Leigh Mills playing for Winchester City is, to my mind, a classic example of a real talent cast on the scrap heap.  Had he stayed at Swindon I don't doubt that he'd have made the first team and either gone to a bigger club with considerable league experience behind him or hopefully being the mainstay of our defence for years. Didn't see enough of Tozer to form an opinion but I don't think the move to Newcastle was the best move he could make

I never really saw much in Tozer but by moving to Newcastle, even to never get a game he probably extended his pro career by 2 or so seasons just because he came from Newcastle to wherever he ends up so.... can hardly blame him.

Again, how much can you see in 2 games Gazza?

I only saw him away at Carlisle where we lost 3-0 and was sent-off.... Despite that, he didn't look out of place. How old was he then? 17?

He was a practically an instant profit for Swindon.

Good work by David Byrne.

I only saw him play once myself so don't think i would like to say if he was any good or not.

Or Leigh Mills would have stayed at Swindon, drifted around the reserves with a few bonus ldvpaintpot appearances for a few seasons and then drifted down to non-league anyway.

These were my thoughts. Going to a Prem club doesn't mean you're more likely to fail, if they have anything about them they'll make it and their potential will come to the surface sooner. If they're a bit crap, they're a bit crap.

Being consigned to the scrap heap, like Leigh Mills, would've happened had he developed here or at Spurs. The same may or may not be true of Tozer and Henshall. Jutkiewicz's development experience isn't wildly different from any of the others, post Swindon, but shows that if there is talent, it will come forth.

The only memory i have of Tozer was when we were at Wycombe one year (maybe in the cup) their announcer called hin Ben Tosser.

Think I saw him about 5 times.

Thought he was totally overrated, especially by the Adver. Couple of the games I saw he was the worst player on the pitch.

Absolutely brilliant the club managed to get any money for him, shame it went to the old board.

I think that's the sum total of his appearances for us Spence!

I didnt think he was any good - that opinion made more so when Morrison made his debut and was 1000 times better.

I remember seeing him make his surprise debut against Charlton, he looked alright - nothing more, nothing less

Better, yes
but a 1,000 times better :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

I know it's just opinion, but I remember seeing Andy Thomson's debut for us, and he was much better than Morrison, but even then not 1,000 times better

I really hope (if he gets the chance) he proves me wrong, but he scares me when he plays.

He too often looks like an accident waiting to happen

Likewise. He has had some very solid games though.

LJF looks like an Ifil waiting to happen at times too. But looks good at other times.

If either can get some consistency then maybe we can both be proved wrong!

drs is the only bugger talking sense here.apart from me of course.
we didn't see enough of tozer to make any sort of fair judgement of him.

I'm certain that top flight teams look down lower league starting line-ups looking for teenagers and take it from there! Top scouting technique.

No...but Newcastle did.

but they didn't.he would have been watched numerous times by scouts for them.

What i mean arriba is after he spent two years with them they come to the conclusion he wasnt good enough..like you i wouldnt judge him on his time hear...though i have to say i didnt rate what i did see in his short time playing for us.

They look for big lads with a bit of pace....the abilty to kick the ball properly is an advantage.

I think it was King, who told Iffy, that our youth system always seemed to produce midgets...think Chris Taylor, Alan Young, so get some big lads in. Iffy got Lukey Dukey, then Byrne carried on the idea with Tozer and Morrison
