It makes a change that it's set in current times, instead of Victorian London, where Sherlock Holmes stories are normally set.

I'm watching some programme about BNP wives on Sky 3. Not really sure why.

Apparently these three 90 mins episodes/films stick pretty close to the books.  Can't say I've ever read them so will be interested to see what people who have make of them.

The overuse of what I guess is the theme tune was a bit tiring during the first 20min setups. Oooh look their going into baker street - doo do doo do, now they've met the house keeper doo do doo do, they're leaving on an investigation doo-do-fucking-do.

The clues popping up in stylised touch phone text seemed a tad gimicky at first, but it's a nice way to reveal clues to the viewer without constant patronising dialog to poor watson, or without instantly having sherlock reveal all the answers. Gives you something to work out yourself.

Looks pretty promising really.

Haven't read any of the source material since I was about 13 so any of those reference are going to go straight over my head.

You've been trying to pull on a Friday night in Wood Street haven't you? Have you got a house keeper?

Couple of saturdays ago, lesbian hen night. No house keeper though.

Not really as interesting a night out as it sounds, bit of a random one though.

Lesbian hen nights are interesting....seems like a bit of a waste, but you'll always watch when they start snogging each other..

Been invited on a few reg? The one I went on wasn't particularly lively. It was more to do with the couple in question being bullied into going on a night out.

Not sure about that Baker Street place, seemed alright for an evening, although I was already pissed and had just been paid which is always a good combo. Always seems a bit dark in their when I walk by in the day, that's obviously not much of a problem once the sun's gone down though.

No, I know a few lezzers, mainly from work and other random stuff, but it's more an observation.

Agree, Baker Street seems a bit too dark to want to go in during the day, but I did break a vow and go in there a couple of weeks back on a Friday night....nothing to report really...just ok.

The vow was taken many years ago, when I was banned from the Cross Keys.

The banning was done by a bloke....no offence intended if it is your brother in law or something, but he was a complete prat.

Twas good, It was very loosley based on "A Study in Scarlet" Which I reread about 6 months back. The original was based on a man hunting and bumping off Mormons who had aided in killing his intended. The actual start where they met, was pretty much word for word, after was pretty much different to the book.

I enjoyed this program a lot, I thought his relationship with the DCI was rather amusing.

I doubt he had the balls to do it but either way your description of him is spot on

I thought it was pretty good, a lot better than the film that came out last year. Quite likely the best interpretation I've seen, being set in the present helped but mostly it was the main characters coming across so well and them showing what makes them tic so clearly.

Only criticism is the same as most drama the BBC do, only 3 episodes is taking the piss. What is the point in coming up with great drama and then making fuck all episodes, whilst giving us over 100 hours of Casualty / Holby a year? It's fucking retarded.

I think its probably along the lines of the "having too much of a good thing" argument.  Alternatively, they may have made three episodes to see how it was rated.  If people liked it, they may make more.

Holby/casualty/Eastenders may be awful - indeed they are - but they do two important jobs.  They fill the airtime and they get the ratings.  This leads me to conclude that a lot of the nation's TV watchers are really rather stupid.

I found it irritating...and the plot became subservient to establishing the strange array of characters, but maybe that will be better in subsequent episodes.  Problem is - for me anyway - Conan Doyle is very dated, and just modernising the stories does not really get round the problem.  I'll keep going with the series, though, and see....

I quite enjoyed it but am hoping the next will be better now that the time has been spent introducing everyone.

Spot on.  The bloke who played Sherlock was on tv over the weekend and said that they had more episodes lined up.  Think they may just be one-offs.

They did a one hour pilot, they must have thought it was good as they dropped the pilot and went with three longer episodes instead. I'd imagine they normally have a pretty good idea how well something will go down well before it actually airs.

What annoys me most about it is that the BBC are more than capable of producing drama that will sell around the world just as well as American shows do and to make shit loads of cash for them to re-invest (or lower the licence fee). They just don't have the balls to invest the required cash and take a calculated risk.

The net result is we get 100 episodes of Casualty / Holby done as soap's with limited appeal outside the UK, whilst in the US you get 50 episodes of Grey's Anatomy / Private Practice which sell around the world. The BBC can and should be doing better.

As much as I'd like to disagree (I can be a bit argumentative at times, but I hide it on here) there is not a single word of that I can disagree with.
