SWINDON Town have enough quality in the younger ranks at the club to compensate for the loss of captain Gordon Greer. http://www.thisisswindontownfc.co.uk/news/headlines/8267983.Youth_policy/?ref=rss Title: Re: Adver News: Youth policy Post by: Arriba on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 11:21:43 let wilson be the judge of that please fitton
Title: Re: Adver News: Youth policy Post by: reeves4england on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 11:35:50 Arriba, I think we too often read these articles and see Fitton says X or Wilson says Y assuming they work independently. Fitton is very likely to have discussed the priorities with Wilson before making this statement and they will have agreed between them that a new CB is not top of the list. And I agree that it shouldn't be - we need a striker and a left winger. I'm still slightly unsure about whether we have enough strength at CB though.
Title: Re: Adver News: Youth policy Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 11:38:50 I think the context of the article is largely missing. The Adver's probably asked Fitton if the youngsters can fill the gap. He's hardly going to say no.
He does go on to say that we may not need to bring in players for that position but could focus on other positions. Seems to me what he is saying is that there is a budget there and Wilson can use it how he sees fit. I'm sure Wilson and Fitton have been talking about this for a while. I will agree though, our back line looks very inexperienced and I would like someone to come in, if simply to organise it. Perhaps even a squad player who can pass on his experience through training and filling in the blanks when injuries/suspensions hit, or if it looks like a total disaster at the back. Title: Re: Adver News: Youth policy Post by: Rustle on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 11:46:21 Dont forget rose brings experience at the age of 27 he should be able to help the youngsters out. I dont think we are any different on experience from last season apart from the experienced one not being the centre back.
Title: Re: Adver News: Youth policy Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 11:51:18 Shirtliff is a bit old to be playing and being a part of a proper training session.
Just an opinion, I'm not saying what we have won't work - I rate our players and Cuthbert especially. But I'd prefer to have the assurance. It may not be a necessity. Title: Re: Adver News: Youth policy Post by: jonny72 on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 12:00:40 What's the big deal with experience?
Darby, Ward and Ferry had only played a handful of games between them and they all performed pretty well. More relevant is that Cuthbert had only played 38 times before joining us, both LJF and Morrison have played more games than that now. Title: Re: Adver News: Youth policy Post by: reeves4england on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 12:12:01 What's the big deal with experience? There's nothing wrong with a few players having a lack of experience. The problem is when you have a whole defensive unit without experience, or perhaps to put it more accurately, some kind of leadership, which usually only comes with experience.Darby, Ward and Ferry had only played a handful of games between them and they all performed pretty well. More relevant is that Cuthbert had only played 38 times before joining us, both LJF and Morrison have played more games than that now. Title: Re: Adver News: Youth policy Post by: Arriba on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 12:43:16 ljf had some superb games last year and i hope he improves further this year.if he does then as long as he clicks with cuthbert we will be fine.add an improving morrison to that and things would be absolutely spot on in that department.but they will both have to improve and that isn't a gimme.also somebody will have to take charge at the back.jonny's point about experience is short sighted.it is key in a defence.if someone is bold enough with little experience to take charge then great.i think that is a bloody rare find though.i dont see any of our current defenders suiting that role(maybe cuthbert at a push)
i dont like fitton getting involved in the football side of it.he employed wilson to do that job. Title: Re: Adver News: Youth policy Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 12:46:36 Am i right in thinking Fitton and wilson discuss after each game which player from the opposition they would have in their team? if so they must have a long list of potential targets.
