250K

Its probably 250k up front with a further 50k if he plays a certain amount of games. I thought we had previously rejected 250k?

Yes, because he could have chosen to put himself out of a job at 29, with a family to provide for. I'm pissed off about this too, but let's try and keep some kind of perspective, eh?

I doubt we would have said "You have to accept this contract, or we wont give you another one" We're not in desperate need of money...

Nobody knows what is going on really. Perhaps DW feels that we are sorted at the back and felt that we needed the cash to strengthen the striking positions, or that Greer had said he wouldn't sign any longer and so take the cash now instead of losing him for nowt at the end of the season.

I'm confident come the start of the season we are going to have a decent enough squad to have a good season.

OK, you're clearly determined to heap abuse on Greer for something that may or may not have been wholly his decision, without knowing the full facts and irrespective of what a good player and captain he's been for us for the past couple of seasons. You've convinced me. Where's my pitchfork and burning torch?

Brighton signed Greer aged 29 for 250,000.

We signed Scott Cuthbert aged 22 for £100,000.

I think that gives this transfer some perspective.

I hope we spend the money on a young striker, and pick up another centre back on a free to put pressure on Cuthbert and Lecs.

Lets see what Greer says in a press conference before we start slagging him off.

Nah, fuck him, he's like Raoul Moat and Abu Hamza rolled into one. We should burn down his garden shed as a token of our rage

The one thing he offered us, which none of the other three centre backs do, is someone who is comfortable bringing the ball out of defence.

Whoever his replacement is, we need someone that can do that.

FWIW, I dont think £250k is enough, but it would seem that it was that money now, or probably nothing in a years time (ala Paynter) as I'm assuming Greer wasn't going to sign a new contract with us.

Very strange decision on our part. I would have hoped for more money as well.

Dougie or Lucas as captain I think.

I have to say this is a bit puzzling.

I don't think Greer has gone for footballing reasons, so either Brighton are offering him  alot more money or the management don't rate him as high as we think.

He does give away a lot of freekicks around the box, and this brings a lot of pressure on us at times.

I hope we get someone better than Lecs and Morrison.

Very strange decision to sell the club captain and one of the most influential players in a successful side.

It might not be his decision? Pull the other one. Only going to be one person signing his contract on Monday and thats cunt himself.

I hope we give him hell. In the past, even recently we sold (Cox, Fallon) or lost on a free (Paynter) but they all went onto better clubs.

Greer hasn't, sure Brighton might be building have a decent future and all the bollocks but they finished below us got beat twice by us easily. Both times with super hero Gus Poyet in charge.

Gr££r cunt

Devil's advocate time Dave - if you had a family to look after (no idea if you do or not) would you take a very similar job at a rival company or organisation if they offered a much higher wage on a longer deal?  This looks to me to be a man looking after his family - and that in no way makes him a bad person.  Perhaps, just perhaps, some things are more important than football.

This happens all the time in the game.  We move on, and I personally wish him luck - except when they play us, of course.

That is absolutely correct Billy. But some people (some of whom may be called Dave), with their Swindon Town tinted glasses, will never see it that way as long as they live. At this level of football, greed does not come into it.

Depends on the job doesnt it?

Its a shitty office job, or manual work  - or something most of us do for a living them yes, yes I would.

Being a footballer is different though, sure at the end of the day its job but its also a competitive sport - now rather obviously I've never been a pro football but rather than money (because lets be honest - they earn more than enough anyway) i'd want to be the best I could be and in truth win things and be remembered long after I'd retired to my villa in Florida.

Again, I've never been in their position - but having thousands of fans chanting your name, hearing the crowd roar when you score, having kids asking for autographs, hell even having kids look up to you like you're a hero - to me, that experience would be worth more than an extra 500 quid a month or whatever.

...but...then people like Phil Smith and Charlie Austin who have had to hold down proper jobs always do seem to appreciate it more than someone who has always been a footballer.

Dave, to someone earning a wage that Greer probably does, with an early thirities retirement age with no guarantee of future employment, an "extra 500 quid a month or whatever" for a few years could make an enormous difference to his children.  Maybe he decided to put this ahead of his personal glory - this would make him more of a man, not less, in my eyes.

Until we know whether the club sold him because they wanted to, or because Greer wanted to go then its hard to make any judgement at all.

I'm disappointed because we lost a key member of our squad, our captain and our experienced defender to a rival in our own division for what seems like a cheap fee.

If we get someone in to replace him and it works out, then fair enough. If we get nobody in and are relying on LJF/Morrison then I'll remain disappointed (unless their performances prove me wrong!).

Whatever the reason is for him going doesn't really matter the fact that he has gone does and I think is very very disappointing ! Doesn't improve us for next season !!

On the money front I don't know why there is this persistently feeling sorry for footballers thinking because they have to find something else to do when they retire. During their careers they have lots of help and advice in planning for that time, and they do (compared to me) get paid well even at this level.

I reckon quarter of a million quid for a 30 year old league 1 centre back isn't that bad a bit of business-we could buy 2 Cuthberts for that!

Agree with that-they earn enough in their short careers to have a comfortale retirement, more than you or I earn in our whole working lives.FFS Paynter will have earned over a million pounds by the time he retires!

Spot on.  Greer leaves with my thanks, and a sincere hope that he doesn't come back to haunt us.  I'm 8 years older than he is, but my career in finance is likely to last at least another 25 years, while his as a footballer will probably last another 5.

Paul D's 'let's get out the pitchforks comments' made me laugh, because

(a) it was apt/witty; and
(b) I love the idea of a scouser gone native in Wiltshire.  Good work!

If the fee is actually £250k (I think it'll be more) then perhaps we've just been stalling over this whilst we were looking for a replacement.
