Title: The US oil spill
Post by: tans on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, 11:26:22
Apparently Obama has compared it to 9/11.

Oh dear.

"In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come," he told the US political website Politico.

In all fairness, he didn't compare the scale of the incidents. What he does seem to be doing is finally recognising that the US is not an infallible, all powerful force that can do what it likes and assume it will be unaffected by the world's problems. What they now need to go on to realise is that America and American attitudes are part of the cause of these problems, but I hold out little hope of that happening.

It might help if people understood the context in which he said it.  He is correct in what he says but then again hyped up, out of context statements sell papers!

I just love the way senior figures in the US (including Obama) have been calling them British Petroleum. Conveniently forgetting that 39% of BP shares are in US hands (versus 40% for the UK) and Haliburton (a US company) most likely played a role in the accident that caused the spill. It's lucky we've got a special relationship with them or they'd have invaded by now.

Look how many natural disasters the US have been responsible for and their stance on climate change.

Those in glass houses should not throw stones- they are the biggest NIMBYS going.

How to deal with a problem

1) Fix it
2) Work out how to ensure it doesn't happen again
3) Play the blame game.

How Obama deals with a problem

1) It wasn't me, I didn't do it
2) Get them!!!!!!
3) Oh. Help the wildlife and stuff

Actually, their stance on climate change is quite different to what many think. Especially since the departure of Bush. The US wants things to be done about climate change and actually implements a lot of policies within its own jurisdiction. The problems it has arise from distrust of other states and the UN - as I said before, the US tends to see itself as the good guy and everybody else as being responsible.

Your point still stands regarding disasters and the general American attitude, although I think blaming them for natural disasters is rather harsh.

Is that even possible?

One word - Bhopal.

How many on here didn't have a fucking clue about Bhopal until this all kicked off?  I was about 5 yrs old so had no clue about it until the recent "convictions".  Two years in jail and $2,200 fine each for anywhere between 15,000 and 25,000 deaths is just fucked up.

I only heard about this for the first time on Saturday from a friend, as when i saw this thread i assumed it to be a tanker or something.

Fuck it's a huge disaster this one. Anyway, on another forum i frequent, i came across this. May or may not be some nutjob - I know fuck all about Oil Wells - but still worth a read as this bloke details how this Well is unstable and WILL collapse.

It's a long read by the way and doesn't make you feel this will get any better, not in our life times anyway.

I avoid all news media like the plague, have done for years. I have no idea what goes on. I occasionally bump into thread titles on here and a few other places, but only a few times a year.
