It's a brilliant trick to get all the attention off the players who might actually get a game.

Standard Mouringho procedure, except he deflects it all onto himself.

Wrong.

Beckham is in fact acting as England's in-house psychiatrist in South Africa. Few know that he gained his qualifications doing an Open University course while at Madrid. His thesis focused on Frasier season 3 which is his second favourite season, the first being the 1996/97 season when he scored from the half-way line against Wimbledon.

Now you know.

Dont get it,why do we need a fucking "ambassador"to go with the squad.Just need the players to do their fucking job, that's all.Sentimental fucking claptrap which just about sums us up.

Shame he's not fit to play.

Still the best we've got wide right.

That's debateable-but not really the point I was trying to make.

Because Bobby Charlton is too old to do it now. The only reason he is going is obviously help our world cup bid. As i said it doesn't hurt does it to have him

According to the Daily Telegraph Cappello sees him as a "cheerleader"-pure sentimentality I reckon

Beckham is a fucking God to english football, I'd play him when he's injured....anyone who thinks other wise needs a boot in the balls! he wears his heart of his sleeve and always puts in 110% unlike most of the rest of the squad. All the attention will be on him this WC so at least the rest of the squad can concentrate on getting the job done!

don't think he'd make it as a commentator tho

Having seen the title of the thread, I thought it would be about this news story:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/w/wolverhampton_wanderers/8719151.stm

I've not seen him play much, recall him scoring a few this season, but £6.5m seems a fair whack for a team like Wolves? Seems to be pretty highly rated though, and is still young so there's plenty of room for improvement.

To me he sums up why we've not done anything in final tournaments for the last 12 years-massive underachiever, like Gerrard.Dont hate him just dont rate him as much as some.

Fair point Dean, but really Im talking about international level.Only care about what he does (or doesn't do) for England to be honest.

As in single-handlely get us to the 2002 World Cup via the Greek game at Old Trafford

Again,Im talking about finals, where we have consistently underachieved for the last 12 years and as talisman for the so called"golden generation" he(among others) has let us down. That cant really be disputed, can it?

Title: Re: why?

I dont see the problem with him being there. He's a popular bloke amongst the players and is generally considered to be a good pro.

I'm sure Capello sees him a being a good influence and thats good enough for me.

You can't take the performance of the team and use it to suggest that an individual has underachieved on the international stage. Drogba has never won the World Cup, Essien has never won the world cup, Cristiano Ronaldo has never won the World Cup. Does that mean they have underachieved internationally?

Roque Junior has won the world cup though...

....and been torn apart by Sam Parkin

I think he's worth having there. It'll take the focus off the squad - Mourinho style. I'd imagine whoever gets the right midfield position will gladly listen to any advice he'd have too. Also with the whole Treisman shite, he'll reverse any ill feeling with a Hollywood grin.

Ah Becks *swoon*

It's his international reputation that's behind it though, not his standing in England or his success in the England shirt.

Capello talked about this today - he's only there for the players to talk to for advice etc. It makes perfect sense to me, there's no-one around who's been through what he has for England in the modern era, so he will have all sorts of experiences to draw on which he can use to pass on advice to whoever wants it. It can only be a good thing.

Once he grew up & started doing a decent job for England I've always been in the middle with regards to Beckham. I've long felt that he's over-rated, but I don't jump all over him like a lot of jealous twats do, mainly because all the women would love to have a wriggle on him.

I think it's great that Beckam's there. Forget about the hype, that bloke has been an absolutely fantastic servant for England. There have been times where he has carried the whole team on his shoulders. And above all, guess what? He CARES! I'm glad he's there. It sure as hell is not going to do any harm.
