Title: Vincent Péricard - Opinions?
Post by: luckyluke699 on Thursday, June 3, 2010, 12:26:06
Hello All,

Believe this is my first thread, so go gentle!  :bye:

I was just going over the past season in my mind, and remembered the number of games that ended up in draws, that we should have easily won had we just been able to score. Billy averaged twice as many goals after Charlie arrived than before.

I really don't think we can afford to go through a sustained period of drawing games we could, and should have won. Not if we seriously want to be challenging for the autos. I feel we need to be seen with a strike partnership, at least as potent as Charlie/Billy was, and from the first game of the season. So my question is this...

Vince + Charlie as main strikeforce? Others to back up, if so who?
Someone else + Charlie as main strikeforce? With Vince backing them up?  :sherlock:

Opinions?? COYR!!

I'd imagine the start of next season is Pericard's moment. I'm sure it'll start with Carlie + Vince as the main two with 1 or 2 A.N.Other being loaned to make up the numbers.

I don't know if that will be good enough. Based on what we've so so far no it won't. But then VP has not been fit since he got here, and every now and again he shows a little something (though not goals, obviously:)).

Of course it may be 'too late' if things don't work out for him. That's the price of not getting promoted and losing some of your key players I suppose.

I like the idea of Pericard & Austin.

Pericard hasn't been given much chance yet, but looks a decent player and a handful.
Give him a run in the team, getting his match fitness up aswell and lets see what he can do.

I'd like to see Pericard fit and given a run in the team.  He scored a few and was rated by Carlisle fans so obiviulsy has a lot more to offer that he has so far here.

That said, if he didnt deliver after 10 games I'd fuck him off.

Regardless we clearly need to sign a couple of strikers, prefrebly one with pace.

A quick youtube search shows he can score goals.

I'm just wondering can we afford to give him a run of 10 games, and for him to not score 3 or 4 goals or so?

If this is to be believed (and if I can count!), he's played 16 games total for us so far?!
14 from the bench, and the 2 starts others mentioned (substituted off after 32 and 57 minutes).

16 partial games for us and no goals? Honestly didn't realise it was that many!

Give Pericard a good pre season with lots of fitness work and I think he'll be a different player.

A lot of posters thought Paynter would not surive when Cox left last season, and couldn't see where the goals were going to come from. We ended up with one of the most lethal strike forces in the division.

In the glimpses I seen of him he looks a good enough player, just needs that first goal, bigger worry is keeping him fit.

A bit rubbish and injury prone - Id say we need to sign a striker - Cox on loan?

Cautiously optimistic. People have obviously seen something in the lad to have been signed by the clubs he has over his career, hopefully DW will be able to bring the best out of him.

I'll be honest. I'd be disappointed if he is our first choice striker next season.

He has had, the odd impact here and there (Gillingham, Norwich, Charlton) but has had just as many forgettable games. He seemed to play for 10 minutes and miss the next two games.

He was woeful at Franchise. Truely woeful.

Austin has gone longer (358 minutes) without scoring for us.

Nice stat work!  :sherlock:

When you put it like that, it doesn't sound so bad. There were several times Billy didn't score in 3 or 4 games for us this season, and he finished 2nd top scorer! :-)

I recall the off off off chants from the Town "fans" when the ref was giving him a talking to at Franchise. Can't get any worse than that can it !

The whole point with Vinny is that he has been completely written off way too early by some Town fans, and it fucks me off. OK it's probably mainly comments on thisis & it serves me right for reading them, but a section of our support seemingly cannot wait to get stuck in to certain players. They must lead such utterly miserable lives that they have all this anger pent up - I just wish they would stay away from Town games.

Vinny's had the problem of breaking up a lethal partnership, he's been injury prone, he changed clubs mid-season, he only got 10 mins here & there - anyone who writes someone off already in these circumstances knows nothing about the game. His showing at MK was slightly worrying but how many players hit the ground running in their 1st start? He's shown enough glimpses for me to be optimistic, plus I have a lot of faith in what DW has to say, ie - "We've seen nothing yet......loads more to come......" etc

He has shown a few flashes of brilliance, I was amazed he got down so quickly for that header against Charlton and he's been unlucky with some other chances. He was always on to a loser coming here when Austin and Paynter were on fire.

He has looked a handful in some games and poor in others but I think a pre-season with us will do him good, as will more game time. If he'd had more luck, he could have had a few goals to his name last season, seemed to get shots blocked/cleared off the line/hit woodwork.

The fans need to back him and I mean properly. He looks short on confidence and inspiration and was devastated to miss the chance at the death against Charlton. I think the problem will come because he won't excite the fans, who will expect godly levels of footballing abilty:

With Austin he gets into such great positions, if he's around the box you expect a goal to happen.
Everytime you expected Ward to get to the byline or cut into a dangerous area.
Going back to Cox - he often made goals all on his own, you just felt everytime he got the ball it could happen.

Pericard is unlikely to be like that, but his role will still be just as important. Fans just need to realise this, which I think is why most never rated Billy so much.

Oh and either JFW tells a quality Peri Peri Chicken joke, or needs to get her head round the fact we don't give a flying fuck what any of the player's wife/girlfriend/saturday night prostitute did.

First time I saw the guy was Stockport away I think. Had been bigging him up to my dad pre-game saying who he'd played for previously, clubs that were apparently sniffing around him etc. etc. Within 5 minutes we were both like, "is this the laziest player you have ever seen". I mean his work-rate was laughable.

Since then I've seen him come off the bench against Huddersfield, Exeter and Charlton and he has made a difference and shown some glimpses of real quality. I have faith that with a good pre-season and a better shirt number than 5, he could form a good partnership with Charlie boy next season

I'd like to see him given a chance of a few matches after a pre-season with us, and not have fans on his back if he doesn't score in the first match of the season.
I have high hopes that he will improve - and score.
