Title: The bobble..and all that.
Post by: leefer on Sunday, May 30, 2010, 10:33:41
Bad luck on that bobble but to be fair Millwall deserved it,they played really well and they stopped our creative players performing.
As for the day as a whole the atmosphere was flat because we had nothing to get exited about...the Millwall fans were class but the way there team started it gave them and there fans the momentum.
I have been watching Town for nearly 40 years now and yes i am disapointed with the result and the way we played but i will be watching again next season..this season has been special in many ways but i for one need a break and to my life back to abit of normality...football has completly dominated my life for the last six months and for me its time for a break.
Forgeting yesterdays unusual performance by our fans all of us deserve credit because we are back on the football map.
So for me its time to forget footy for a while...and hope i come back refreshed and rearing to go next season.

Quite right Leefer. Time for a break. It's been 'emotional' as some one once said. Now for a bit of time off from football (club football any way) and we can all come back refreshed, full of optimism and get into some good old fashioned 'Steve Lomas spotted at the County Ground' speculation type threads. Can't wait 8)

Haven't seen it yet... Is it really bad?  I hope Charlie doesn't take it too hard. He was worried his career was over when he failed to score for the first time. Chin up lad. We love you and you have an amazing career ahead of you.

Was pretty bad. Meant that he basically miss kicked it. I'm certain that was a goal if it hadn't have bobbled.

Yep. It was absolutely evil. I am 100% certain he would have scored had it not been for that. If that had gone in, even though we'd been playing crap, who knows?

I didn't see it at first, you need the super slo-mo action replay from the right angle to see it. Ball was rolling flat then jumped up about 6" just as Austin made contact so it went off his shin rather than his boot. We'll never know if it would have gone in but there keeper was already going to ground the wrong way.

It's come off his ankle/shin. Was a goal otherwise, no question.

Still trying to download the game but I'm a bit throttled during the day, should finish it off tonight hopefully

On the accounts of others, Charlie isnt taking it too well.

Just got to get behind our TALISMAN for next season and see him go for that Goals Record? Harry Morris (47), 1926/27.

i'm sure no swindon fan holds charlie responsible for missing that chance.he has been a revelation for us,and is a major factor in making the play offs in the first place.

Definitely not, anywhere else and that was in the back of the net

What arriba said. Charlie has been immense for us. But we should get a lynch posse together to hunt down the Wembley groundsman like a dog

Well, a YTS kid with a pitchfork. Actually it's the gobshites who designed the bloody thing (and signed off on it) as London's premier corporate entertainment venue instead of being our national stadium who we should lynch.

Personally I don't count it as a miss.

The pitch should have been red-carded and us awarded a penalty.

the pitch is a joke.apparantly it is so shit due to it not being deep enough.this is why it cuts up so easily

Title: Re: The bobble..and all that.

they should build a brick wall around it to create the illusion of a pitch

Title: Re: The bobble..and all that.
Post by: jonny72 on Sunday, May 30, 2010, 18:24:11
There is only one person blaming Austin for the miss and that is Austin himself. Not sure I'd waste any time trying to convince him otherwise as he won't listen and will just use it as motivation next season. Though I would make sure he knows his contract isn't going to be cancelled and he won't have to go back to bricklaying.

Makes a refreshing change for a player to have the attitude he does.

To be fair I had a very restless sleepless night thinking about that bobble and what if.

I cant begin to image how badly he's taken it.

Title: Re: The bobble..and all that.

He really shouldnt take it badly, not his fault at all.

Without him, we probably wouldn't of even been there yesterday.

I think theres no doubt that we were running out of time to find a second striker this season. Paynter was struggling without a top quality partner. The Pericard signing in January probably would have been too late to make the play offs.

So to sign him from non league outside the transfer window and get 20 goals really was a football miracle!

CHARLIE CHARLIE AUSTIN!

Title: Re: The bobble..and all that.
Post by: jonny72 on Sunday, May 30, 2010, 19:01:34
As far as I'm concerned it was Austin that turned our season round from a top half finish to challenging for automatic, and here's another stat to back it up....

- Paynter played 1330 minutes in games which Austin played no part in, during which he scored 5 goals.
- Paynter played 2570 minutes in games which Austin played a part, during which he scored 24 goals.
- So Paynter scored (nearly) five times as many goals in only double the minutes when Austin played.

If that bobble happened to Rooney missing a sitter on an important qualifier, the outsourced company responsible for the pitch(as Wembley has no groundsman) would get lynched by the national press, but it's happened to a striker, who plays for little old Swindon...so it's one of those things.

Charlie, we don't blame you. We blame the dickheads at the FA, who will not employ a proper groundman, and let the pitch ground in BEFORE playing every event imaginable on it. The old Wembley pitch also had rugby and American football on it, but it didn't suffer the punishment it is now taking.

I would have scored...but then I would have missed without the bobble.  Also, I would have been caught by the slowest player on their side and tackled before I shot.  On top of this I would not have scored so many (any) goals all season.

Head up, Charlie...hat-trick on the opening day.

CHARLIE CHARLIE AUSTIN!

When I first joined here which was around the time Charlie signed, I was banging on about what a great goal scorer he was and how he would improve that miserly goal difference and should be stuck in the first team straight away(think it was after Billy missed a sitter from a yard out) People on here must have thought I was quite mad or naive, and I did get a bit of stick if I remember

I have been watching Town at the CG on and off since the age of seven even though I live in Bournemouth and this season has been an absolute treasure.

I would also to thank the owners of this forum, it's a brilliant place to be and I've met some great folk through it, I hope I will be a member for many years to come. Just one thing that annoys me that "Two other people have posted you might have to review your post" can that be got shot of?

Thanks folks I've had a great time

Apart fromthe bobble, what influence did the pitch have?
I think itsuited Millwall's style more than ours - the pitch was so slow it allowed their "in your face" game

I've seen it now. Charlie boy that is not your fault in a million years.

Also, did you see the chunk of turf come out from under him as he took that shot which Forde fluffed around the post? What a joke.

His sister posts on a couple of Charlie Austin pages on facebook. Get on them and show your support.

NICE ONE CHARLIE, NICE ONE SON.

Got anyone else that we should sign and put straight into the side? Another centre forward, left winger, creative midfielder, attacking LB, pacey CB and a tall, robust, unflappable, communicative shot stopping, cross handling, penalty saving keeper would be nice?

I haven't spoken to a single person that blamed Austin, whether or not there was a bobble. Everyone says the same thing, that we wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for him and that shit happens - move on to next season and another 20 plus goal haul from him.

We didn't see the bobble when he took the shot and thought he'd just shot badly.  Everyone around us was going 'can't believe he's missed that, any other day and it was in the back of the net' etc etc, but still no-one was blaming him.

Idiots saying he bottled it, can piss off.  My work colleague knows him and his family quite well and apparently he is absolutely devastated by it, refusing to take phone calls and see anyone.  The picture on the front of the Adver today says it all.  I feel so sorry for him and hope he gets over it and realises how important he is to this club.  Chin up Charlie!
