Title: Town Players From The 1920's
Post by: jonny72 on Thursday, May 27, 2010, 21:11:02
Twelve cigarette cards of Town players from the early 1920's....

Can anyone explain the different kits?

I'm guessing that; Coleburne and Metcalf are in the kits of their previous club, Skiller was a keeper and the first six are from another later season when we didn't have the crest on the shirts. Not sure about Tout, was he another keeper?

Magonnachie has the most impressive forehead I have ever seen this far west of Klingon plus a little Fraiser thrown in for good measure.

Good find though.  Cheers Johnny

The cards were issued by Godfrey Phillips between 1920 and 1923, it was a pretty comprehensive set comprising just under 2500 cards in total (though some of these were Rugby players). I'm sure that's nowhere near a complete set of the Town players, I've got a checklist somewhere I'll check to see who is missing and see if I can get them. Surprisingly they're only worth about £2 each.

I'll sort out some other cards to post scans of. Though it ain't easy finding Town players, especially older ones, as not many were issued - pretty certain A&BC / Topps (who issued the bubble gum cards us oldies grew up with between 1959 and 1981) didn't feature a single Town player. Some great cards from the 60's and 70's of players with a Town connection though.

. Not sure about Tout, was he another keeper?

That picture of Tout was probably taken when he was a 'keeper - quote from Dick Mattick's "The History of Swindon Town Football Club -
" Right Half Billy Tout ,a native of Bristol ,was the team's penalty and free kick expert. He had played as a goalkeeper and outside left before settling down as a right half ,but his versatility was shown by the fact that he could play at full back when injury to team mates made this necessary"

Just looked Mr Fleming up. The only STFC player ever capped?

This looked a good match for him, even though England lost (one of his 11 appearances):

Date          Venue    Opposition    Att.            Result    Goals
4 April 1914    Glasgow    Scotland    127,307    (L) 1-3    1

Tout was missing from the 1912 semi final v Barnsley...Town got a late penalty and because the usually reliable Tout was missing Silto(signed for big bucks from Barnsley) took it...and missed.
Finished 0-0 and Town lost the replay.

I think hes the only Town player capped for England while playing for us, we have had other England internationals who won their caps before or after playing at the CG.

Also plenty of players capped for other countries while playing for Town.

Fleming scored a hat-trick in one of his England appearances, against a Ireland (all one country at the time) which is a clue as to how long ago it was!

WW1 stopped him making alot more appearances, being religious he wouldnt play on Sundays.
After playing he had a sports shop in Swindon for alot of years ware he put his name to a certain style of boots....the shop was in Commercial Road i believe.
For you people who like the old stuff look at Giantkillers.Com.
Its a brilliant site but for some reason you cannot copy a link, its got some great storys from the past of Swindons cup exploits.

For some reason Dick Mattick's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swindon_Town_Football_Club_100_Greats) 100 Swindon Greats book has Fleming as playing 12 times for England. ???

One match wasn't recognised as being official,so theres always been abit of a question mark over how many games exactly that he played.
