Title: Merchandise at Wembley Stadium?
Post by: NorwayRed on Monday, May 24, 2010, 17:44:34
At least 5 norwegian Swindon Town fans have bought tickets for Wembley and are looking forward to the game. I wonder if there will be any Official STFC Merchandise sold at Wembley, outside the ground etc. before the game?

Eager to pick up some Play-Off merchandise for the game!!

COYR!!

See you all saturday!!

i remember at an england game a year or 2 ago, there were a lot of people selling flags etc, but obviously not official stuff as you say. when i decided to get a flag i had to follow the bloke for about 10 minutes as they kept getting escorted out of the area for not having licenses etc, hardest time ive ever had buying something from someone desperate to sell it to you!

Thanks a lot!

Great, Sonic Youth, we should bring a norwegian flag then - but then again; being heavy, I travel light - so I'll only bring myself and a toothbrush. No room for flags!

And to Sutton: It's a long story, but I've been a fan since 1991 and Bernt - one of the other going over in our group - has been from 1989. That's before Jan Aage. There is a long tradition for english football in Norway because the Norwegian Broadcast Service (NRK) used to broadcast Match of the Day from England. And almost every norwegian football-fan has a british favourite team, and in 1991 I read about Swindon being demoted a year before and startet to follow their results - well and that's how a 20 year old love affair started, I guess! (and I also remember from the Panini albums when kid that I liked the old crest with the train)

I went over the first time during PL in 93/94 and our fan club in Norway had of course Jan Aage as a honorary member. Maybe some of you old timers remember us being out on the grass before the game vs. Chelsea in 93/94 honoring Paul Bodin with the Player of the Year-award?

We also travelled over in 94/95, and I have also seen Swindon live in 2000 and 2008. Unfortunatly it's years between the live games because I live in another country, but I have been at STFC World member for years - so that's a way to make up for not being able to watch the game live - I listen to most of them!

Come on you Reds!

Cheers guys!  :)

For some kind of strange reason thetownend.com has not been on my radar, so therefore I only registered here today! I have always been at the thisisstfc.co.uk forum (as "norwegian"), but that forum is kinda slow - and it sure looks like this forum is way better - so I'd better stick to this!

Maybe next season our Swindon Town fanpage in norwegian can have a local correspondant from thetownend.com as well!  :hmmm:

I know Bernt probably is active on this forum, or at least he's a member - but I am not quite sure what his nickname is!

I remember in 93/94 Bernt and I spend new years eve in Swindon at the pub called "The Glue Pot" with some Swindon Town-fans original based in London. I think they were members of the SSILA (do they still exsist?) A great night with darts and beer! :)

When I was stewarding at the County Ground we had a group of about 12 Norwegians come over for a game, either Premier League or 1st Division as it was then, most became fans due to Jan Age Fjortoft playing for us at the time.

Great bunch of drunken lads....loved the laugh they had....were you one of them NorwayRed by any chance?

jjedmunds: No, I wasn't among them. We were not as many as 12 when we were over in december 93 - january 94 and october 1994. In 1994 we saw the home game vs. Wolves and Lecce (AIC) and away vs. Barnsley.

In 1993/94 we saw the home games vs. Chelsea and Arsenal, and away at Coventry. The Swindon crowd went crazy after Andy Mutch' last minute equaliser!! :D

In 2000 I saw Swindon away at QPR - getting to see a Grazioli scissor kick goal!

In 2008 (or was it 2009?) I saw Swindon win 1-0 away vs. Luton Town.

Now I really look forward to the game saturday!

As you've been writing about me (Bernt), I thought I should give a short presentation:

I've been a Swindon supporter since 1989 when I was 13 years old and wanted to find an English team to support.  Me and a friend bought the magazines Shoot and Match and I read that Swindon was doing well in the old 2. division (my mate started to support Bristol City).

As Hans (NorwayRed) wrote, we travelled over during Christmas holidays 93-94 and we had a great time, except for the results (0-4 against Arsenal, 1-3 against Chelsea, but a memorable 1-1 against Coventry when Andy Mutch secured a point in the dying minutes).

I've also been "picture of the week" with a picture on the whole page 3 in the official match programme against Dons(last season I think) with a picture of me at the rock "Kjeragbolten" in Norway and also a smaller picture in the same picture.

We've been to England almost every year, but the problem is democracy and as most of my friends supports teams in North England (Stockport, Everton, Liverpool, Man City and Leeds), the trips have been to this region and Swindon were playing at home, so 5-6 hours each way with train during one weekend would leave little spare time.

I invited my girlfriend over for the match against Leyton O this season and wanted to introducse her to "my" team.  A
boring 0-0 match wasn't the best start for her relationship to Swindon, but nevertheless, she joins me for this weekend to Wembley.  She even bought a Swindon-scarf  to me this Christmas and one for her self, so it looks like there will be one more supporter in Norway

Hi Bernt, Great to hear from you. Like the story and obviously hope you get to see a win Saturday.

Quick questions given you Norweigans seem to stick with the club through thick and thin when it would  be easier to support a 'bigger' team.
 - Are people in Norway as suprised Swindon is your English club as we are?
 - Does you 'mate' still support the slave traders (Bristol City)? If so do you mock him (laugh at him), or does the local Swindon/Bristol City rivalry not really have much meaning to you?

Swindon supporters are considered quite excotic I can tell you.  As it's mainly the Premiership (and Champions League) that is on the tv, most (younger) people supports the bigger teams.  And of course lots of kids who are forced to support Liverpool by their fathers who started to support them during the 80's.
I think that even if Swindon hasn't been doing too well for a while is also one of the reasons that the relationship is so strong.  When you find a club, you stick with it.  I'm definitely no "glory hunter".

I grew up with my mate, so he's still my best friend even if he supports City ;)  We've read about the revilery between the clubs and we've had large discussions when they were in the same division.  He hopes Swindon are promoted as he consideres this will bring 6 easy point to City.  NEVER !

You'll be pleased to hear that the Glue Pot is still a firm favourite with some of the London-based fans.  There is still a strong London-based fans group, but the SSILA name was dropped some time ago.

Although I did not move to London myself until some time later, I'm sure I know the people you met in 1993/94.  If you let me have your e-mail address (via PM?) I would be happy to let you have details of the pub that we/they will be meeting at before the game.

haha Sonic Youth. That is me to the left - as a 16 year old kiddo in 1993 in RED and to the right is a good friend Svein Erik - also a member of the original Swindon Town Supporters Club of Norway and he travelled to Swindon with some mates and I in october 1994!

Welcome Berswin as well, let's try to be more active towards the british fans here on thetownend.com! We've got to pick up the tickets at Wembley, so we have to meet right up when we arrive at the ground saturday!

Also, as Bernt (Berswin) also says:

Being a Swindon-fan in Norway is quite exotic. Lots of people support smaller british teams (like Stenhousemuir, Woking etc.) but honestly most kids today in Norway support Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal. The National TV doesn't broadcast english matches on the Public Channel anymore, so it's not the growth of british football team fans today that it was 20 years ago.

I drink from my Swindon Town FC-cup everyday at work, and my colleges are equally amused that I follow Swindon and not a "big" team everytime the conversation pops up!

The atmosphere varies a lot at Norwegian matches.  As a result of the tv-deal, 2 matches are moved to Sunday 8pm and Monday 9pm (normal kick-off is Sunday 6pm) and these two matches are often "local derbys".  As the derbys in Norway can mean the clubs are 3 hours by car in distance (it a looong country with few cities), the result is that less fans travel and watches it free on the tv.

My opinion is that there is a better atmosphere at English grounds in general (count out the Macclesfield-Hartlepool match I attended) and that there are more groups of people who start the singing and chanting, opposed to in Norway where you have one group of supporters who sing and many spectators who aren't that vocal.  But as I wrote, it varies a lot and sometimes you could hear a bird fart during the match and sometimes it's noicy all the way.

Title: Re: Merchandise at Wembley Stadium?
Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, 13:56:28
the two lsk matches i've attended couldn't have been more different... the first was a derby against vålerenga and the second was more recently against hønefoss. nevertheless, the atmosphere was pretty good in both games. i wasn't expecting it at all.

obviously the travelling supporters are far fewer, even hønefoss who are relatively close to lillestrøm bought less than 200 fans to åråsen. the fans are obviously very influenced by spanish and italian football with plenty of colours, flags, flares and the dreaded drum. there's been some issues at lsk matches recently with casuals clashing with ultras, so perhaps it's moving towards a more english style.

i've noticed that there's a lot of coverage of english football in norway, so it doesn't surprise me that people think you're a bit odd. pondus is probably a good example of most norwegian's attitude to english football, isn't it?

there's a tiny part of akershus that i've left a very big swindon town mark on anyway.
