Done and sorted - thanks for info Gazza !

As it goes the last train from Paddington is not until 11.30 so I reckon it should be "do-able" even if there is extra time.....

However penalties might be an issue  :(

£17.00 is a fucking bargain (£8.50 each way including Tube) in anyones books and gives plenty of times for a few bevvys in the Big Smoke, like myself I am sure there are people going by themselves to the match and not able to get group saver discount so.... Southern Railways is always the cheapest website IMO.!

big risk if it goes to extra time and penalties

There is also the risk of being kept in the ground at full time  to let the home supporters disperse first.

Wouldn't think so. Even so. Match ends at 9:30... half hour in even gives you 15 mins to get to the station. its right around the corner. If we werent kept in at Millwall cant see it at Charlton really....

without extra time you'll probably be ok, but totally screwed if it is extra time.

I'm not sure how I'm getting there, but not via train from swindon

Gazza you are taking a massive gamble..

22.17 is cutting it too fine.

Meh, True but if we do go to extra time etc,  I'll have money to get an offpeak single by then back to Swindon so not overly bothered. It's whether you want to take that gamble or not!

problem is that the next charlton train leaves at 11.30 but you miss the paddington connection so have to wait there overnight! unless trainline is wrong. I suppose the tube to paddington may be quicker but the stop is a bit of a walk isn't it?

somebody tell me I'm wrong. the train would be easiest

That why I have done it how I did it. Closest Tube is North Greenwich (02 Arena) unless you get the DLR from Woolwich Arsenal and change at Tower Hill

You can get back to Didcot if it goes to extra time.

Im with Gazza that the 10.22 train or what ever it is, is plenty of time get to Charlton station if the game stays within normal time.

If it goes to extra time, you can get back to Didcot or Reading. You'll have call out a relative or V Cars from there.

Very true. and if enough Town fans get back to Didcot its what 10-15 quid to get back to Swindon each if you share a taxi or whatever with other fans so not end of the world.

You would hope common sense prevails and extra trains will be put on. I've been to events at Crystal Palace for athletics and extra trains are usually available. Don't think they will be worrying too much about checking tickets for cheap singles other than at Paddington as in London you will just need to get through the barriers.

Called First Great Western Customer Services to ask they said, "they had a couple people call earlier but there are no plans to add extra trains because it's not a major event like the rugby or FA Cup"

Their head office is 01793499400

You aint going to get Great Western to lay on a later train.

It shouldnt really be a problem. Its just that there needs to be a train from Charlton to Charing Cross around 22.35/22.40 time.

If you want to pester anyone it should be the company that runs that line. It should never take 20 minutes, that little bit. But I think the problem is they have to go so slowly over the Thames on that old bridge into Charing Cross.

Shouldn't be any problem unless it goes to extra time and as I said if a few town fans are about, get to Didcot or Reading, Or even PO*ford and get a taxi from there back to Swindon. If there are 4 Town fans about split the fare only about a tenner or £15.00 each anyway....

Below are the The Official Train Times I got when i booked to come back.... Plenty of time to get from Charing Cross to Paddington thankfully!

Return journey: 17 May 2010

departs Charlton at 22:17 travel by Train service provider Southeastern to station London Charing Cross arrives 22:43

departs London Charing Cross at 22:53 travel by London Underground to station London Paddington arrives at 23:11

departs London Paddington at 23:30 travel by Train service provider First Great Western to station Swindon (Wilts) arrives 00:44

That's what I meant, Southern Trains would probably lay on extra trains as you'll probably have 20-25000 Charlton fans trying to get away so would think the Met would get them to lay on extra trains from a public order to clear the Charlton area.

Go to http://www.southernrailway.com/ and try booking there. When you get to the area to select your tickets click on the box that says "Single £8.50 to £50.00" on both outbound and return legs. The fare is up to £22.00 now. You can pick your tickets up from Swindon station.

Why? Charlton is inside the travelcard area. You can just use your underground ticket on the overline train.

Group savers split at Didcot should be £15.95 each all the way from Swindon to Charlton.

True but this is just for single fares for people with no mates like me who cannot get 3 other people to go with them!

Got our Train tickets the other day, cost us £19 inc. Tube. Think we're heading down at about 2:30pm as some of the other's i'm going with have to book half days off work.

just priced up a groupsaver for 4 and split journeys between

swindon-didcot = £17.70 (total)
didcot-charlton = £46.00 (total)
= £63.70 for 4 people = £15.92 each (on the assumption that I've done this right of course)

obviously taking a chance on there not being extra time pens but I hear it'll cost about 40 quid in cab (you do the math if there are 4 of you!) to get to paddington from charlton to get 11:30 train home.

There are 3 of us travelling leaving at 3ish, so I can meet any of you singletons at station anytime after 5pm tonight.

PM me asap please if you're keen.
cheers

If anyone gets stuck due to penalties etc... never fear if you miss the last train. You can either get a train to Didcot as mentioned. Or there is a national express coach at 1am from Heathrow back to Swindon! Sorted
