Title: Swindon Town -v- Brentford Offical Matchday Thread
Post by: Bogus Dave on Friday, April 30, 2010, 23:57:11
Hope we go 2-0 down and score 3 in the last ten minutes. Not only will it lighten up an otherwise pointless game, i really hope we get the 'not winning from behind' monkey of our back before the play-offs

Ugh. Brentford at home conjures up a very distressing image for me (and doubtless, many others), of Gareth Whalley's futile attempts to catch Paul Brooker as everyone else stood still and let him run almost the length of the pitch to score.

Add in to that, Nicholas had a fucking terrible game and it rather summed up our season.

God I feel like Reg.

(FWIW, I think we'll do better this time out - pressure is pretty much off and hopefully there'll be a bit of sunshine and party atmosphere)

I may be missing summat but why isn't KOT starting our threads? He hasn't started one in ages and we haven't won in what seems like ages.

Oh and 1-1 today. A midfielder to score for us.

getting some well deserved playoff rest in

I really hope we don't. I know a few players might be a bit jaded at this stage of the season, but being in good form going into the play-offs is vital. Losing two on the bounce, or two meaningless performances, would not be ideal at all.

Although I think second place is out of our grasp I can see Charlton beating Leeds, Millwall losing to Tranmere (who really need a win) and us eeeking a win out. Its unlikely that Leeds will do anything but beat Bristol Rovers next week but the above scenario could see a fantastic end to the season next week.

I agree. It's all very unlikely but to even be in with a sniff of 2nd place next Saturday would change everything.

Sure will. And if we beat Millwall but still don't go up it will set us up nicely for the play-offs.

2-1 to DWBA, Charlie and Billy 1 each. I would love for it to be after us going one down. Don't care what the crowd is cos it won't include me today (stuck at work). SWMBO is keeping the family end up though.

As for second still being on- I've got my tickets for Milwall and would really love for it to be a game that mattered.

Fitton on the radio, last interview of the season.

Stadium:  Whittle in-situ modernisation, reasonable cost estimate, realistic.  Forum mentioned, Deepdale STFC'd.  Ground may  look like the DR all the way round.  Will not turn ground around, Wembley and Old Trafford are the FIFA wrong way round.  Many things are possible, need to  use space behind the seats six days a week.  New Town End will be the first step.

Last day for low priced season tickets, average of 10,000 wanted for next year, fund team with more/better players.

In five years structure of Premier and other leagues may be different, important to get into the Championship - parachute payments means that the Premier League will become more permanent.  With four years of parachute payments, teams will go up and down like whore's draws on Saturday night (my words, not Fitton's).

Planning for next year short with the play-offs making time short.  Teams that go up and come straight down again perhaps due to lack of time for proper planning and organisation.

Need to strengthen all over, players were in the squad that were never going to play.  Need more depth, options with injuries, but spine of the team o.k.

Changes today, manger has tired players, some need a rest.  Not saving them, just need a rest.  Wilson believe in the core eleven, manager doesn't worry about one bad game, the other forty-five games are important.

Links with Celtic, Man City etc. important.  Darby for instance might be able to come back, who knows.

Fitton's closest club is Brentford.  Fulham have done great and it's not always about money, it's doing a good job.  Hat's off to Fulham on their achievements.

Fitton may be commentating for the play-offs.

Wilson on:

Accident with the Brentford player wish him well, great result, great for next Saturday.

Game closer than it should have been a win's a win.

Going to be a fantastic week, no pressure on us at all, pressure on Leeds and Milwall.

Good goals, first goal terrific, third goal very good movement.  Pity, about being so close at the end.

Defending, ...Brentford had plenty to play for, made it difficult, two banks of four set up, should have had more goals.

Great energy, boys that came in did great, good movement from Nobbly, Eastie and LJF did well also.

Crowd, pleasing.

Pericard and other injuries, wanted to put O'Brien on.  Didn't really acknowledge a Pericard fitness question.

Dougie POTY, terrific season, consistent, a leader, even in his bad games he's good.

Next Saturday nobody will give us a chance, including the bookies.

This week, treat it as the last few weeks, rest up, time with families stayed relaxed, enjoy the publicity a little.

Don't think so,  they'd need to win 4-0 and other results work for them, but they're sort of capable of doing that...ie Leeds lose doesn't matter by how many, unless they score a sackfull in doing so. us and Millwall draw, Charlton lose.  This is mental it could happen...

Match report from Waccoe

the best form of defence is attack but how were we supposed to build any form of attack without being able to sustain any sort of possession.. the nerves got to them again and we resorted to hoof ball tactics again and again

i feel three players, in particular, deserve singling out for shit performances today, all three let the nerves completely get to them:

kilkenny and snodgrass- barely strung a single pass together of any note for the entire time they were on, both completely anonymous..

hughes- he has impressed me this season but he was completely woeful today and had to be brought off. he became a complete liability and panicked to hoof away possession, near enough, every time he had it, without fail..

those three are really going to need to learn to cope with the pressure in time for next saturday..

overall i can't really fault grayson for today apart from leaving out watt.. too young to let the nerves affect him and completely comfortable holding on to the ball and keeping it on the ground, exactly what we needed but by the time he came on it was too little too late..

What an unbelievable set of results. I always knew it could happen but you always sit there thinking one late goal is going to ruin it all. Thankfully Leeds managed to throw their chances of equalising away and it sets next weekend up to be an absolute cracker. Realistically you'd expect one of the current top three to claim second from here but it's a funny old game and to have 5 teams going for it will provide some great entertainment.

The pressure is on Leeds and Millwall more than us. We just need to go there and spend 90 minutes looking to win the match in any way possible. If we don't manage it, or if we take the points and Leeds win leaving us third, despite being the worst case scenario from next week it'll still have been a cracking season and we'll be able to look forward to the play offs. Let's go to Millwall with a positive mindset and come back with one no matter what the result.

Greer on:

Main thing three points, played  well at times.  Good performance needed after last Saturday.

Disappointed with losing the goals.

Brentford player wish him the best, fourth official put up 8 mins.  Didn't know Leeds and Millwall results until right at the end of the game.

All about a good performance and three points, delighted to be in with a chance at Millwall.

Just another game of football on Saturday, seemed relaxed knowing that Leeds need to lose or draw.

Thanks for summarising the interviews!

The Fitton one sounded very interesting - especially with respect to the new ground and thoughts about next season. 10,000 average sounds ambitious if we're still in League One but if they have a few tricks up their sleeves to try and get the punters in then hopefully the fans will respond.

So glad i already have my Millwall ticket, especially after seeing the queues after the game.

Decent performance that could have been more comfortable, we allowed them far too much possession and time on the ball though. We played some beautiful stuff though, and created the better chances in all honest. Nouble, other than his cross to paynter, was gash, whereas Easton and Lescinel was apt and suitable replacements for Ferry and Cuthbert, and played their part. Paynter adding to his tally again, once more proving his real worth.

Brentford really did impress me, and could be challenging for play-offs next season, providing they keep hold of Scott and the majority of their squad.

Those minutes after the injury were the most agonising i've suffered in a long time, at one point i was screaming at the ref to blow up. The feeling after he did, however, was of sheer joy, ecstasy and enthusiasm. Who'd have thought that with one game to go we'd still be able to fantasise about automatic promotion?

Roll on next saturday, lets fucking get right behind the lads, the pressure isn't on us, lets fucking go up! :)

I think. Aaagh  my head. I was settling in for the playoffs and this happens.

Furthermore its all academic., Rovers can't possibly get anything at Leeds. Though I said that about Millwall at Tranmere and Leeds at Gills. And then there is the Leeds United effect to take into account...

Good game today.Enjoyed it except  all that injury time! Summary - good going forward, let in 2 sloppy goals. REf let too much go. Brentford were OK.

For some reason I feel more confident that we can a get a result next week than if we were sat in 2nd?  The pressure is massively on Leeds now and if they don't score early on, their fans will turn on the team, which could have the adverse effect. There's also going to be far more pressure on Millwall than us as well. How sweet it would be for little old Swindon to just quietly nip them both at the post!

Surely in that situation even if it was a freakishly high scoring Millwall game, it would still have to be a draw - thus no change in goal difference?

Todays game, was alright - we played well in spells and looked very dodgy in other spells. That was probably worse than some of our recent 'draw' performances.

Today, like the last 4 games was all about the result - nothing else mattered.

We did our bit and my fucking god, so did Tranmere and Charlton.

Out of all the teams Leeds could have had, last day of the season Bristol Rovers from our point of view, has to be one of the worst.

I was thinking if the GD was the same then it goes down to goals scored (presumably). Milwall would be on 83 with +31, Uddersield win by 4 - they are 83 with +31, Leeds lose by 1....you get the idea.

If by that you mean that Rovers are mid-table with nothing to play for, I see your point.  (But that doesn't concern me too much, given Leeds' ability/propensity to screw up when it really matters.)

But if you mean that Rovers will not be looking to do us any favours because of the local rivalry, I disagree.  Without looking at their squad list, I'd hazard a guess that most of their players grew up some distance from north Bristol and probably don't know the words to that stupid Irene song.  (Or is it Ethel?)  Your average Rovers player will care no more about us than they do about Oldham or Hartlepool.

Millwall will race into a 3-0 lead after half an hour, fans will invade the pitch causing the match to be abandoned and the win given to us by default. Happy days

What a day it's been. Thought we deserved the win. We were electric in the first 20. Brentford couldn't get near us and when Billy scored you thought it was going to be plain sailing. Sadly we let our foot off the gas and let them come at us. They built up some pressure and we defended poorly thus resulting in them getting the equaliser. But we kept at it and got the 2 goals. Great cross for all 3 of the goals today and the cross from Nouble for the 3rd was the only decent thing he did. Wasn't impressed with him today. Those last 10 minutes were bloody nerve racking especially when Brentford missed that sitter at the end.

So onto the last day. Wilson always said it would go down to the last day and it has. So for next week come on Town! We can do it. And come on Bristol Rovers. It's all getting very exciting.

Thought we played well against a decent outfit and scored 3 of our better goals of the season. JP was outstanding, and clear MOTM for my money. Ward and Paynter both excellent. Darby had his best game for us, and seems to be slowly getting the hang of the overlapping thing. I wish Kev was in the team, but clearly playing him at Millwall would be a bad idea.

The 3 who came in didn't really do enough for me. Easton is ok, adequate cover, but without Ferry's energy we struggled to get a real grip of the midfield, which put more pressure on the creaking defence. Maybe giving Cuthbert a week off was a good idea, but JFL is not in the same league and his concentration levels simply have to improve. He did well against Southampton, but their threat was aerial. Brentford did more on the deck, and he didn't like it. Nouble put in a peach of a cross for goal 3, but a more consistent threat is needed.

Good performance today, a bit sloppy at the back for the goals but attacked really well, the move for the first goal was fantastic. I also thought Easton had a good game. Cant wait for next saturday, i would love for us to be ignored all week and then sneak into 2nd place.

The only grumble i would have is some twats at the back of the DRS singing 'we hate millwall scum'

If Southamton didnt have a 10 point deduction, there would be 6 teams in with a shout of 2nd on the final day and nobody bar Leeds (because us and Millwall play each other) would even be sure of being in the play offs!

Thought nouble was cack today...not sure he has anything to contribute from here on in. Bar the cross for the third, dont recall him doing anything (whereas CA seemed to be in the mix as soon as he came on). In his post match interview DW said nouble showed some moments of magic today...err, when was that then?
Agree with the comments above about JLF, its his few moments of madnes which scare me.
But onto positives.....Douglas sensational today, conducted everything, and Ward is just loving his footall at the mo, paynter looking dangerous, ditto JPM (great cros field ball for first)....could go on and on with superlatives but cant be arsed....even Darby had a better game today...

Fantastic going into next week with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Agree with Langers, not that I expect it at all it would be great to sneak in under the noses of wall and lids...would be the proverbial bird to Radio 5, for example, who give the impression that Leeds are the only team in League one.
But saying that though, looking forward to the play offs in a perverse kind of way.
Also, bought the 69 er today...good stuff.
Finally, hope brentford player is ok, and its just concussion or similar.

Didn't arrive till about 2.15, nightmare trip up, hit two bad bits of traffic Downton and Marlborough

Entertaining game, after the first one went in thought it was going to be plain sailing, but to be fair Brentford came back into it well. My MOM was JPM, Douglas also had a good game along with Wardy. Was surprised to find Charlie on the bench, but he deserves a bit of a rest, tho Charlie was the cause of the late finish with what looked to be a stray elbow to the Brentford defenders head ooops.
Brilliant the way the rest of the results went our way

@Leefer, thanks for the beer m8, will return the favour, hopefully at the home leg of the playoff

Have to agree with jimmy's comments on Nouble, the cross was great but his first touch is abysmal, just seems to bounce off him

Fantastic going into next week with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Agree with Langers, not that I expect it at all it would be great to sneak in under the noses of wall and lids...would be the proverbial bird to Radio 5, for example, who give the impression that Leeds are the only team in League one.
Spot on. We need to go to Millwall for an end of season day out. If we somehow end up in 2nd place come 5pm then it would be incredible and we'll have a fantastic celebration (once we've got out of Bermondsey!). If things don't go our way then we can look forward to the play-offs and we'll have lost nothing.

We'll draw, Leeds will lose 1-0, Charlton will draw and Huddersfield will win 7-0

Leaving Hudders, Leeds, Millwall and ourselves on 83 and Charlton on 82!

I think.

It's worth noting that the 'Away Form' table makes rather interesting reading...

Unfortunately, Millwall happen to be top of the 'Home Form' table!

As bad as Fola Onibuje from what I have seen.

The backheel he did in the first half was quality, under hit and straight to a Brentford player.  :D

A good 3 points, a decent crowd and news from elsewhere was excellent. Its all set up for a cracking next week. Ward looked back to his best after a bit of a dip. JPM was very good as was Billy. I thought Greer looked a bit iffy today, Sheehan's general passing is poor but overall a good 3 points. As for Nouble, lets face it, he's absolute bollox. I appreciate he's a young lad but he has bugger all strength or control and his legs can't be his.
A little bit of fun before the game outside the DRS with a few Brentford pups. Absolute handbags and I don't think they appreciated what a hiding they would have got if they had been a bit keener

Nouble is a poor man's Eric Sabin.......

Quite frankly (no pun intended), the lad's on a hiding to nothing here. Everything he tried to do and didn't come off was greeted by groans and cries of 'your shit', but when others made equally poor decisions it was 'unlucky' etc. A definite scapegoat.

Oh and yes, he's shit.......

Nouble wasnt brilliant today.

He's a young lad though, and in fairness he made the 3rd goal with a fucking pin point cross for Bill to easily head home the winner. Regardless of anything else he did today, we won the game via his cross - and the players fucking mobbed him in the celebrations, which shows they appreciated his contribution.

If you were a premier league contract-holding player of his age (18, 19??) and were trying to make your way in football on loan at a lower league club teetering on the edge of auto promotion, would you take kindly to a couple of thousand wankers moaning everytime you fucked up or missed a chance? Would that add to your confidence or make you shit your pants everytime the ball came near you?

For fucks sake, if big Frank or anyone else scores a goal off his fucking arse next week or in the play offs, we'll all be going fucking mental, wont we?

It's time to put the stupid, cuntish, pikey opinions in the background and get behind every player Wilson sticks out wearing a town shirt - if only during the next couple of weeks or so. The progress of the club and what's resting on the next game/s is what's important right now.

Well that was entertaining.

Seemed to be a real feel good feeling around the ground today from the off.

Brentford were decent and their passing game matched ours at times. Think the criticism of Nouble is a tad harsh, thought he looked decent after creating the 3rd. Clearly been lacking confidence.

Highlight of the afternoon was seeing Paynter singing along with the Danny Ward chant. Legend.

Luckily the tension towards the end of the game was eased slightly by the rather attractive female officer in in front of the Town End.

Onwards to next week, the final week, what an epic season. The progress in 12 months has been immense.

From where I was in the town end it appeared pretty much everyone was right behind nouble and genuinely willing him to do well. I supported my all my team 100% during the game and left my criticisms for a forum after. Nowt wrong with that. Absolutely not. Where I was in the middle of the DRS, there were far too many having a go at him pretty much every time he touched the ball and, as delta said, "moaning everytime you fucked up or missed a chance". I was agreeing with delta that it doesn't help a player to be got at during the game, not having a go at people criticising him on here. Hence the "What delta said"

Yeah, the Town End was fantastic yesterday. DRS was also pretty good by and large but I also noticed what delta did, that there seemed far too many ready to leap down Nouble's throat every time he got a touch. He wasn't great and I wouldn't disagree with most of what people here have said about him (with obvious exception) but barracking an 18-year old while he's playing isn't really going to help him up his game. It's just daft

What I need to get my head round is this- what happens if, after all the games are done, we have a situation where Leeds and Milwall are on equall points and matching goal difference- who gets the automatic spot? Is it down to goals scored?

Apparently if Leeds lose 1-0 and Milwall draw 2-2 next week that would make everything totally even. It would go down to results between the 2 clubs, Millwall have beaten Leeds twice and therefore 'Wall would be promoted and Leeds would face the lottery of the play-offs

Well taken goal from Billy for the first, but the cross field ball from JPM in the build up was superb.

Just done a quick bit of digging.

First decider is Goal Difference. If they are matched then Goas Scored. if they are matched it then goes down to what happened in the games between the two teams.

I wonder WTF would happen if two teams finished on same points with identical goal difference, goals scored and matched each other when they played.......... All hypothetical I know but I'm a bit strange like that :insane:

At the risk of turning the whole thing into an agreeing with each other love-in, yes. I can't work out what it is with Nouble whether:

a) He's just a bit shit
b) He's struggling to adapt his game to League One from Prem reserves/fringes of 1st team
c) He's a bit contemptuous of even being down here at all and so can't be arsed

I'm inclined to think it's b as West Ham and Chelsea must have seen something about him and he's not seemed to have had that Hutchinson style "I'm too big for this League" about him. But tbh it doesn't matter much which it is as at the moment, some flashes aside, he's not producing.

For all those reasons, I'd be pretty disappointed/worried if he started next week at Millwall. But if he does, I'll be cheering him on like a loon along with the rest of the team.

I heard it, mate who sits next to me was going bloody mad about it and delta did too so I wasn't hallucinating! That said, IIRC from previous posts I think delta sits either in my block or block next to me so maybe it was limited to just the centre area of the DRS.

Nouble: we should get behind him as he is wearing the STFC shirt , despite not performing at his full potential for us yet. I believe he has struggled to adapt to D1 style: his work rate needs upping & he needs to use his physicality more as he was getted rolled by the brentford centre backs most of the game. However constant negativity from the stands wont help his confidence.

We were right by the DRS when there were the handbags. Bit of a throw-back.  Lots of noise, but more that than anything else.  Couple of truncheons waved too, old bill were in there quick.

Really enjoyed the game yesterday, thought the atmosphere was better, maybe cos there was more for us to shout about.  Nouble is frustrating, but he put in a good cross for Billy P's second and maybe that will give him confidence.
Three class goals, those were my favourite bits, though the cheering when Charlton scored was good as well.
We were a bit dodgy in defence still, slipping about some - did they water the surface before the start?

Think Wilson will stick to best XI next week, bringing back Cuthbert, Ferry and Austin, would like to see Manks start, but doesn't look like that's going to happen.

All in all, that was pretty enjoyable. A decent performance on the pitch and really good atmosphere off it. I hadn't seen them play since the Exeter game and from what I'd read/heard about the Walsall and Wycombe games I was a bit concerned that the players might have lost the plot a bit, forgotten all the things that had got them to where they were, and generally fallen apart. Not a bit of it though. For most of the game they passed the ball really well and generally looked confident and composed. Brentford were a decent enough side but 3-2 makes it look a tighter game than it really was. If we do end up in the play offs I would fancy us against anyone.

With regard to Billy Blue Boots, everyone sat around where I was (DRS Stand towards the Stratton Bank) was just shouting "Come on Frank!" every time he got the ball, albeit in a semi-jocular-not-expecting-him-to-do-anything kind of way. But it was encouragement nonetheless. I don't remember him getting too much grief. The support in general was very good. I thought the Brentford support was pretty decent as well.

One down side was having the misfortune of sitting in front of a pair of cunts who just 'chatted' the whole game about anything and nothing...stuff they'd done the previous evening, women they'd tried to chat up and so on. Only on very rare occasions was football actually mentioned. To start with you're aware of a dull droning in the background then you actually 'tune in' to what they're saying and it's really hard to ignore. I could have happily twatted them.  :crash: :cunt:

Apart from that minor annoyance it was a pretty good afternoon's entertainment. 8)

Oh yeah, Old Bill all around the pitch at the end with riot battons drawn was well OTT I thought.

I think they got rid of some their cans throwing them at coppers out of the fire exit.

Everyone knows when on a coach you get rid of any alcohol before you get into the police force area of the home team.

I was sat next to a fat woman who kept trying to nick half my seat. I'm going in the DRS or Town end next time

Beeb highlights now up. What a good ball that was from JPM to Wardy.

Swindon - 2 minutes of highlights, Charlton/Leeds - 6 minutes. Meh. Keep it quiet  ;)
