So he has joint Liverpool, and signs on 10th of May. So if we have to play Charlton in the Play Offs he wont be playing because he cant play for them again this season.

A bit of a strange decision from the Charlton board, but I'll certainly take that!

Who the fuck negotiated that deal?  Why wouldnt they sort it so he was available for the rest of the season then joined liverpool as soon as their play off campaign ended?

Good news for us though, thought he looked a very good player for his at the CG a month or 2 ago.

What a stupid deal, you'd think they would negotiate that he would join at the end the season - unless they are desperate for the money and don't want to risk any career threatening injury in the PO's cancelling the deal

Nuts deal.   Would think the boy might be a bit gutted to miss out on the play-offs?    See him out on loan next season I bet.

Shelvey hasn't been playing for them recently anyway. No loss from Charlton's point of view although he is a good player for this level. Not sure he'll make the grade at a big club like Liverpool.

Not only will he be unavailable for Charlton's biggest games of the season, but I dont think Charlton have got enough for him. He is a stand out talent and probably a future international.

Which leads me to conclude that Charlton are a bit hard up.

Charlton do indeed have financial problem, which is why I understand they had to sell him.

Under league rulings a team can only receive a transfer fee if the player ACTUALLY signs for a club, usually these players are loaned back to the selling club but as we are out of the transfer window that is impossible.

Hence...Charlton needed the money so had to sell.

BBC article says that Charlton are looking at a 'stategic partnership' with Liverpool which I guess that it seems to be similar to what Andrew Fitton has been looking to do with Liverpool, Man City & Celtic. Maybe it's a sign that the big clubs want to hedge their bets with the Academy system and also pick up youngsters who have been at lower level clubs and gained league experience (also gets around the geographic restrictions). Liverpool get a 18 year old kid with a season in League 1 football behind him and has probably shown that he can push on.

Clubs like Chalton and Swindon probably get a reasonable initial fee and possibly tied into more favourable sell on/performance related add ons as part of the wider partnership without being fleeced. This would be as opposed to having a free for all or a young player tapped up and the lower league club get's benefit of loan players like we did with Darby to get experience. Sounds like the way forward
