Title: St Pauli
Post by: Bob's Orange on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 07:27:35
Interesting article in the Times, especially about renovating the stadium to put more standing space in.

Been there, loved it.  The world would be a poorer place without FC St Pauli.

Pfft, you St Pauli lot make me sick.

Just you wait until Fortuna Dusseldorf join you in the Bundesliga, then you will see a proper stadium and we can give you another proper spanking.

FORTUNA!  FORTUNA!  FORTUNA!

The Weltpokalsiegerbesieger almost back in the big time!

Sankt Pauli have had a quality season and I would love to see them get back to the top flight this year after all their troubles since the last time they were up there. A proper breath of fresh air. Millerntor has needed has needed some work for ages. Last time I went (2005?) it was a proper dump, but in a good way. Graffiti all over the place and everything looked as though it was knocked up by some cowboy.

Fortuna have had a great season too considering they were in the 3. Liga last season but I doubt they'll make the relegation playoff this season. None of the 3 teams relegated from the 1. Liga last season are going back up!

I'm looking at doing a couple of european games next season, that's gone to the top of the list, sounds bloody brilliant.

I see what you mean.

BTW, really enjoyed the piece on St Pauli, and brown kits are ace.

ST Pauli > any other German team. Fact*.

* shame about their Celtic link though!

Don't blame me, it's my German  relatives (don't mention the war) fault. They live not 10 minutes walk from the ground. Though Uncle Hienze (RIP) was Hamburg. Sell out.

I've been to several other German grounds and been overwhelmed how proper their football experience is.  Just about every German I've met seems to be a St Pauli fan or employee.  I have a cousin (not you though SY, you should be so lucky) who had or has a season ticket at the Millerntor.  All have invited me to their vibrant, green city. I'm not a bundesliga glory hunter, I even checked the results ooh, once a year when they dropped back to the regional league.  My mate's got the t shirt.....

And I'm so rubbish, I still haven't been.

The 'Retter' one? I got that when I lived(ish) in Hamburg. Thought I was some sort of super club-saving hero for buying that. Or do you mean the replica shirt?

The Retter one.  Was that also the one they did where the more t shirts they sold, the cheaper local beer became in the city?  Or something.

What a club.

They do indeed. As far as I can see it's because they're a bit mental..in a good way...

Apparently you can buy St Pauli merchandise in the Celtic club shop and there is an annual St Pauli-Celtic festival ???

And vice versa. Though it was more of a club caravan when I was last over (presumably that was temporary). Thankfully the obvious twining with the Gills didn't materialise.

Well to be fair, there's been plenty of "peaceful pitch invasions" in England recently too - Newcastle getting promoted at Plymouth being the obvious example- but strangely they don't get the same coverage as when it all kicks off

I did actually mention the Newcastle example in another thread. Unfortunately the ugly aspect of Football is always going to sell more papers/get more coverage.

There's more hooliganism in Europe than in England nowadays.

There was loads of pitch invasions over the weekend, the vast majority with no trouble at all.

The St.Pauli - Celtic lot comes up due to the fact that Hamburg and Rangers also have a little 'Connection', I think the Rangers/Hamburg one started first, and due to the fact Rangers hate Celtic and Pauli hate Hamburg they 'Teamed up'

Quote
Bundesliga side ban strippers at games(AFP) – 3 days ago

HAMBURG, Germany — Top German football club St Pauli has shown the red card to strippers performing inside a corporate box owned by one of Hamburg's many lap dance clubs -- but they can dance once matches are over.

The Susis Show Bar on Hamburg's main red-light drag, the Reeperbahn, has installed a large mirror and a pole in their box for their strippers to dance for guests invited to watch Bundesliga games.

But the club has blown the whistle to the idea guests in the box can watch football while the strippers perform, and say the women can only dance after the 90 minutes of action on the pitch is over.

St Pauli bosses acted after fans complained about the image of the club, which has something of a cult following and whose supporters are staunch anti-fascists, being tarnished.

"We had a discussion with the owner of the box and made it clear there can not be dances during the matches," St Pauli president Stefan Orth told German daily Bild.

"There can be performances after the matches, there can be dances, but they must not end up nude.

"If they dance just once naked, they will be out of here!"

Prices for a box at St Pauli's 24,850-capacity Millerntor Stadium start at 65,000 euros (87,500 dollars).

St Pauli has never been afraid of ground-breaking initiatives and are the first football club in the world to install a kindergarten so children of fans can be looked after at the club while their parents cheer their team.

St Pauli are 15th in the Bundesliga after winning promotion last season.

Seems we have had an unofficial twinning with their league position. FFS, even my German team looks like being relegated.

I was in Hamburg last weekend (great City).

Watched the second half of the St Pauli v Werder Bremen game in a boozer. St Pauli were pretty woeful. Pizarro had a field day and scored 2 goals. The St Pauli area of Hamburg is pretty cool.

Moenchengladbach v Dortmund was interesting as well. A sea of yellow at the game as Dortmund could have won the league. They lost.

Holy thread resurrection....

Quite an interesting podcast about what's going on at St Pauli re them being back in the Bundesliga and the ways the club and fans are working together trying to raise money to give them the financial foundations to stay there...

looks very interesting, will have a listen - ta for sharing that.

Some really novel approaches generally from German clubs who are trying to develop other sources of revenue.

Rather them than the hipster sanctimonious "I'm more left wing than you" try hards, for me.

Looking at the German leagues, surprised to see Hertha Berlin are only currently mid table second tier.
