Colchester was always going to be a tough place to go, but win on monday and we go top again which will put pressure on leeds and milwall again.
If we win our next 4 games which we should then we will be 2nd again, as leeds and millwall both have tough run in's.

Wilson on......dominated game missed chances....ref poor for both sides, Colchester only had three chances.  Two fouls before first goal.  Austin and Ward missed good chances.  More domination in the second half, not enough composure in front of goal need to be more clinical.  Just one of those days, Colchester manger said to Danny that they have not been this  lucky all season.

It's interesting that on the rare occasions we have been beaten this year, we've been absolutely dicked.  Slightly worrying.  As others have said, we've never won a game after going behind.  What if we concede first in one of the play off games?  I'm not sure we know how to dust ourselves down and grind out a result after an early set back.

Just got back.

First half we were so much better than them, to go in 1-0 down was ridiculous. If Douglas and Ward had had their shooting boots on, with a bit more luck (Greer smashing one against the bar having run though on his own) and just a little bit more directness, we would have been two or three up at the interval.

Unfortunately though, not taking advantage of the bags of posession we had and them going a goal up (looked like a foul on Sheehan) played right into their hands. I knew Colchester would be direct and not very pretty but I still rated Boothroyd as a manager. The way they played today though was a fucking embarassment. I lost count of the number of times their players went down 'injured', particularly in the second half. Every corner or free kick took an eternity for them to take (most of the ball boys mysteriously went missing) and they were generally a bunch of cheating twatting cunting bastards. Boothroyd would of course justify it by saying that they won the game but if that's what you call football Adi, you can shove it right up your fucking arse. You are a complete cunt.

I was sure at half time that we would turn it round as Colchester just did not look like a play off team but the second goal killed us. It was a great strike (Douglas and Ward take note) but after that you just knew it would't be our day. Pericard and Nouble were about as effective as I would have been when they came on.

Still, lots of twists and turns to come and I suspect Wilson was right when he said it would go to the last day. I really don't want that to happen though.

We were brilliant in the first, Wardy and Dougie in particular. However, in the second it seemed that we had nothing in midfield, Billy and Charlie werent getting any service and I dont think we utilised JPM and Wardy like we do usually, they were generally in acres of space but we seemed to want to play hoof ball after the second went it. Nouble should have come on sooner to mix it up a little, as Charlie was having a quiet game. However, DW bought on Pericard who did the sum total of fuck all...I am starting to think that he was a waste of money.

My mistake if we didnt, bloody good job if he was a free...

Cheers for that...been out all day and shocked at the score...cheered up by the fact we will be second again monday evening...Wall at Yeovil and Leeds at Carlisle tuesday are real toughys for both.

Good summary. I still can't quite believe we lost that game 3-0, to a team that looked completely fucking clueless. I was sat next to 2 neutrals who are doing the 92 grounds (and what a horrible, soul-less concrete block of a ground in the middle of bloody nowhere it is), who decided to come in the away end as they thought there'd be more atmosphere (although we were pretty quiet today, I thought). As they said at the end, we're a far better team than them, played much better football and created the better chances, but it just wasn't our day today.

Move on and concentrate on Monday night.

We battered them first half and should have been out of sight. Second half they got the rub of the green, had almost no creativity, but won a lot of second balls, and were aided by our chasing of the game. I think the ref can take alot of the plaudits for Colchester's win today.

I can't imagine ever playing like that and not winning, apart from when we joined them in the kicking-the-ball-as-far-as-you-can competition. Oh well, it's not about how you go down, it's about how you get up.

Just got back. Colchester i thought were by far the worst footballing side that i have seen this season- home or away. They made no attempt to play football at all, spent much of the game conning the officials and timewasting.

Basically we were the better team, but lost today because we were bullied out of the game- the physical and direct approach we just could not cope with. We tried to copy it in the second half and failed miserably.

Their first goal was a blatant foul on Sheehan- up to then they looked very nervous and the goal was totally against the run of play. This changed the game as there was only one team in it beforehand.

Always thought that Boothroyd was a decent manager- until today that is.

Worrying that we still have not won a game when we have gone behind this season.

I think today is proof of that old saying. Three-nils come in threes or whatever it is.

Well it doesn't sound like we've 'bottled' our promotion hopes then. I'm quite looking forward to Monday now, might try and get down the pub a bit earlier as I have the day off.

I missed all the action today, even on the radio, due to deciding that I was well enough to work and that I needed the money.

To be honest I thought we'd scrap out a 1-0 win today before bottling it on telly Monday. Hopefully I'm wrong again on the last bit.

I've only read a few of the match reports that have been posted, but would it be fair to say on another day it would have been a scrapped out narrow win? I'm taking the moral victory on the prediction.

I think on another day it would've been 5-0. They looked very edgy for the first half, scared to close us down and scared to go forward, if we'd scored first they would have collapsed, i have no doubt about that.

It's weird really. When we score first we don't look back. If we don't then it's a different story. I'd like to see our stats for all the games we haven't scored first in.

Just got back and echo the feelings of others we were so much better than them it was unbelievable I just can not believe we lost 3 - 0. If we finish third and get them I would be delighted as over two legs we will batter them, the biggest problem today was the lack of ambition by Douglas and Ferry to shoot when they get in good positions on the edge of the box. At 2 nil I would have left Charlie on and gone 4 up front with 10 minutes to go as we were still all over them but pericard and nouble offered nothing.
Also 22 for them was a complete cunt after scoring the second he ran straight towards us in the front row and mouthed Fuck off whilst giving my 10 year old son the wanker sign, I reported it to the steward and the old bill who took my details but fuck all will be done although they did say that the referee will be informed.

Strange feeling after the game and Colchester's approach reminded me of Cambridge Utd in the early 90's and came away with a similar feeling. When we were on top in the 1st half we could have been a bit better with our final ball, Ward got in some great wide positions but often his cross was blocked by the full back so the opportunity to open them up was lost. Lost count the number of blocks and balls bouncing around their box that dropped to a Colchester player when running free. Think Charlie went for a smash into the roof of the net and ended up blazing over.

2nd half we lost our way a little bit and got dragged into playing it too direct and down to Colchester's level, that's what these teams try to do as they are better at playing that way. We looked a bit vulnerable in the 2nd half to their direct approach and Greer/Cuthbert got themselves in a mess when a row Z clearance might be needed.

Re the not coming back from a goal behind, isn't this your greatest strength is also your greatest weakness. We don't go behind very often in games to are become these used to dealing with it and clawing a game back. Need to just move on to Monday and set a marker for the other teams. We did look a bit tired today but should have enough for Exeter, they are in reasonable form 3 wins, 3 draws but teams down there don't go on long unbeaten runs in the same way that Leeds & Colchester had to turnaround.


PS did anyone see the Gillingham fans must have decided to stay at the stadium after their visit as that must explain the pikey caravans!

Charlie has been guilty of doing that this season as the Hudders fans posted on here so don't think we can complain too much

To be fair it's not the only flaw in our team. Others are not being able to win from behind and conceding late goals, as so many people have pointed out. In fact, the late goals thing would have cost us more points than a goal scoring central midfielder would have.

Thought we were better than them by far but Ward did not give enough quality to the all the pocession that he had down the left. He either kicked it into the defender or banged it too deep to the far post.

Neither Ward, Ferry or Douglas can shoot....if so we would be dead certs for second.

We had the chances but we didnt take them....ref Austins 'miss' i am sure the ref would of disallowed it for a foul if he had scored.

Alarming: If/when we get into the playoffs then this is the team to avoid...why?...because we just cannot mix it with a physical kick and rush side and we play better against footballing sides, something that Colchester are not! Typical Adie Boothroyd team that reminded me of Swindon under Macari.

Agree with you Flash about the play-off point. I'd rather have Hudderdfield, Saints or Leeds if the worst did happen and we have to go through the play-offs. Bad memories of Brighton in 2004 means I couldn't take a 2 leg tie against Charlton or Colchester only to see us batter them but still lose. all to play for now. I just hope we win the next 2 and hopefully see Leeds and Wall slip up to move us back to 2nd.

Surprised at the lack of mentions (1 I think) of the recent Rovers game, as it was a carbon-copy. We looked fukkin tremendous until they got their first goal, which gave them their lift (goals change games), and from then on it was a completely different game. While it was 0-0 I had exactly the same feelings as at the Rovers game, ie "fuck me I'm enjoying this, we are a GOOD side these days, we're clearly a classy team that plays good stuff and creates/takes lots of chances".

Ward must've had the ball at his feet for 43 mins & 17 seconds of the first half, & while he did look quite threatening, it has to be said that he made nothing of it. I hope BBC or whoever shows Greer's THWACK, as it was mighty spectacular - if you can shoot like that you cunt, why don't you stride forward more often?! We were ace 1st half, got caught on the break by that twat that scored a screamer against us for Cheltnum, & that changed the game. Before this we were aggressive, won headers & 2nd balls, then came the football, however afterwards they made it THEIR type of game in which they were more comfortable than we were.

We did seem to lose a bit of sharpness, fitness, aggression - call it what you like, after they scored. Ward should've scored, Sheehan hit a piledriver, Pericard was unlucky, Greer's header into the keeper's arms - you just knew it wasn't our day.

Scrawny little Col U teenager provided the 2nd half entertainment. He was sat on his own giving it the large one, a few Town fans spotted him, gave him dog's abuse, steward bollocked him & he was made to move, & he sat there with his head in his hands, got another bollocking from what looked like his Mum, he then stormed off clearly saying to the stewards "why don't you tell them, stop picking on me!" He came back & had the last word, but he did give us a laugh during what was a frustrating afternoon.

Meant to say, by some horrible co-incidence i went with the same friend that went to Gillingham with (his last away game) and he wore the same shorts and t-shirt and i, quite strangely, wore the same t-shirt and jeans.

We then joked about how we'd lose...

These mornings are the worst.   So I was thinking of some positives from yesterday:

- Colchester player getting it in the face
- Greer and Lucas arguing after the second goal (shows they care)
- us being in control first half, we can't fail to score normally after pressure like that
- nice walk to a rubbish soul-less ground
- seeing us play away in red

I was commenting on an incident which I personally whitnessed yesterday. I have never been sat with the opposition fans when Charlie has scored so it's not something I can comment on.

I actually agree with you that if a player has been getting a load of stick from oppo fans then it should be ok to give a bit back and they have no right to be incensed at this if they have been winding the player up.

If however, the opposition fans have done nothing to wind the player up then it is out of order for them to run in front of them giving it the big 'un. They should wind their necks in. That applies to Charlie Austin, Anthony Wordsworth or anyone else. Yesterday, no one had given Wordsworth any stick as far as I am aware (It's not as if he spent that much time down that end of the pitch) so that makes what he did out of order. Simple really.

Maybe Wordsworth is a Leeds fan or saw the Charlie Austin celebration last week. He got booked for it and didn't do it again on the second. Would rather that Charlie ran to the Swindon fans more often when he scores like he first did when he came here.

Wasn't there yesterday so can't comment in particular on what Wordsworth did or didn't do, but in general I find the bit that upsets me about that kind of scenario is when an opposing player scores, rather than how he celebrates it. He could run past me mooning or turn away with nothing more than a demure Princess of People's Hearts style flutter of the eyelashes, I'd still be pissed off but mainly about the goal.

There was a two footed lunge by Greer that I was suprised he let go. The problem was they were a dirty, niggly side, all elbows. But every time one of them hit the deck they stayed down for 60 seconds. I dont think anyone can blame the ref. We had plenty of chances to win the game in the first half.

Have to say, Austin wasnt as brilliant as usual. Their defenders were very rough, but still, he didnt get into the game much and I was suprised he wasnt subbed sooner.

Its just one of those games isnt it? We deserved a lot more. Probably the most frustrating game of the season, after Rovers at home.

Terrible ground. Really think that sort of ground will be the death of English football. It should be easy to get to football games, not an absolute arse. The question we were asking before the game was if this was Swindons ground, would you bother? And most of the answers were not favourable.

Quite, as I unfortunately remarked on the way there yesterday. I don't believe in 'lucky' anything, but when Fitton was commentating on Leeds he did mention that the players prefer the blue away strip.

We've not won this season when we've conceded first.

Likewise, on the seven occasions we've lost this season, we conceded the first goal. There have been six other games where we've conceded the first goal and not lost. It really isn't as major an issue as people are making out.

We have only managed to come back from behind and get 6 points this season against the following teams:-

Oldham (A) 2-2
Walsall (A) 1-1
Colchester (H) 1-1
Charlton (A) 2-2
Huddersfield (A) 2-2
Norwich (H) 1-1

Without auto which is still up for grabs of course, not winning when the opposition scores first is a bit worrying for the play-offs, for which a home draw obviously isn't a good outcome.  Wilson didn't say much yesterday but he did say it needed to be sorted out at both ends.  It will be harsh on Cuthbert, JFL could start at CB tomorrow night.  What I got from Wilson's interview, though was that he wasn't too bothered about the third goal, first wasn't a goal due to two fouls and for the second we went asleep after dominating.  Earlier in the thread somebody mentioned not scoring enough from midfield, which I think rings true, if Paynter and Austin are being mugged and the ref. is allowing it, the goals have to come from somewhere else, possibly Greer realized that and was unlucky not to score.

This is a key point.....Leeds would of been very different if the open goal they missed went in.

We also play better against footballing sides - Franchise and Colchester are very similar and if they had weak refs like yesterday every game they would win the league.

Correct we had more shots on target than them but they scored 3 out of the 4 they had- rarely we were just not clinical enough.

I was there. The Reds had a shit load of chances. Colchester had 6 attempts on target (and the first 2 of them were the ones that Lucas parried away and Vincent subsequently scored from). The first goal should not have stood as Shehan was fouled followed by Vincent looking offside before he netted (though that assesment is from a very brief look at the goals on Auntie). The second goal was a vey good strike, though Wordsworth should have wound his neck in and not rubbed it in afterwards. Goal 3 I remember little about as I am trying to blot the game from my memory.

We had a number of good performances (Ward, Greer, JP) but no one was ruthless enough in front of goal.

The referee was diabolical.

Tierney was a thuggish cunt and Greer should have knocked his head off.

Tierney ran 15 yards to slap Payntor in the face in front of the ref and got nothing.

I will not have a go at goal celebrations as Austin does it all the time, i thought he was unlucky to get booked as he was a bit subtle.
