Title: ROAD CHARGES!
Post by: le god cuervo on Thursday, June 9, 2005, 12:07:28
so what does everyone think about these new road charges the government are proposing?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4075490.stm

BOLLOCKS am i paying £1.30 a mile! & BOLLOCKS is my car being fitted with a tracking device!

i pay enough as it is in petrol every week driving to newbury to work every day, and the tracking thing is only a trick so they can catch you for speeding

Can't see it happening to be honest, although it does say if implemented it would replace road tax and fuel duty.  But it's a daft system which I don't think would be particularly fair, plus how could they enforce the fitting of a tracking system?

If it drastically reduces fuel prices and signals the abolition of road tax I say go for it, you labour cunts.  Just makes the people who use the roads more, pay more.  Seems fair enough to me.  Travelling salesmen - unlucky.

Read the book entitled '1984' by George Orwell. In that book, Big Brother was not a reality tv show and Room 101 was not hosted by Paul Merton

This scheme is a no goer, particularily the GPS tracking idea. I can't imagine the goverment being able to implement  an IT project that uses (currently) a US satellite system that tracks 30 million cars, hooked into a computer that takes your photo if your car is on the road but not being tracked (to stop GPS cheats/cloned/chipped boxes). And what about Johnny Foreigner - they get away without paying?

Had to laugh at the idiot Alasdair Darling today who said that something had to be done to prevent gridlock (true) but many people would be paying less than they do now. Riiiight, so if people are paying less they will go on the roadds less will they?? Also should a 24 litre hummer that does 2 miles to the gallon pay the same per mile as a noddy car (aka 'smart')?

Idiot government.  ID cards, per mile charging, whats next?

Its not fair in the slightest.

- you would get charged the same ammount for driving on a motorway in a 1.1 micra that does 50 mpg or a 5 litre Land Rover that does 10mpg. What the fuck?

- The price of virtually all goods would increase due to greater transport costs

- This would cripple many small business's and provide a disincentive to work for those that commute

- rural communities are punished, they have no option but to have a car

- who do you think would have to pay for black boxes in our cars? thats right. us. just like the fucking ID cards. God I hate the labour party

The only way to ensure that the people who use the roads most pay the most tax is to abolish road tax altoghether and slap it all on fuel.  At the risk of sounding like a tree hugger at least this would force manufacturers and individuals to both produce and buy more fuel effecient engines.
