Played in the Champions League this season.

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11758_6014013,00.html

Quote
Skysports.com understands that Liverpool defender Stephen Darby is set to join Swindon on loan.

The 21-year-old full-back has been tipped to become a Reds star in the future and has already featured in the first team this season.

But manager Rafa Benitez is keen for the youngster to gain regular playing time for the remainder of the campaign and that would not be on offer at Anfield.

League One promotion hopefuls Swindon have therefore moved quickly as manager Danny Wilson aims to add what could prove decisive quality at a critical period.

It is understood that Darby is on his way to the County Ground for talks on Wednesday afternoon, with Swindon keen to reinforce their squad after taking only one point from their last three games.

The former England Under 19 international made his full Reds debut in the UEFA Champions League defeat to Fiorentina in December and marked the occasion with an error that demonstrated his naivety when gifting Alberto Gilardino the wining goal.

But Liverpool-born Darby made an impressive return to the first team in the initial FA Cup draw with Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

That's good news that we're making every effort to bring a right back in.

I did wonder if it was time for Nathan Thompson to step up,at least into the 1st team
squad for the trip to Brighton?

I'm never convinced having more than one scouser in the side is a good idea, think back to the days of McMahon and the likes of Holcroft and Alex Smith.

I'd rather think in positive terms such as a player like David Thompson.

If it's true, we should try and get Jay Spearing as well. He's not getting games and would be good cover for the midfield.

Hahaha. This would be a mint signing. He was pretty good when I saw him a couple of years ago in the reserves, and didnt look completely incompetent when he's played for L'pool first team either.

Seems strange for Liverpool to send us a rightback when they havn't exactly got much choice there atm.

Apparently Andrew Fitton & DW met up with Liverpool officials including Benitez about Liverpool sending some more of their talent our way including Jay Spearing.

This could mean the departure of Jamie Stephens (Youth Goalkeeper) who Liverpool have shown a keen interest in and some of our future talent if a deal is struck between the 2 clubs

I fail to see why what division we are in next seasons effects whether Spearing comes on loan till the end of the season?

Its good we are forming links with top clubs........and Liverpool aswell!

I wasn't specifically saying about Jay Spearing, just about the deal itself. Obviously depending what league we're in, the quality of player will fluctuate. For example, a reserve team/border line first teamer would gain more experience if we were in the CCC, while a steady reserve player is more for league 1.

I reckon the style of football we're playing is more important than the league we're in. As we're playing attractive passing football it makes us a far better club for loan players to go out to.

Darby is pretty good. Remember that Ward lad we signed from Bolton? Not quite first team standard, but better than the rest of our league. Darby has two "quality" right backs stopping him having a first team place at Liverpool (Johnson and Kelly) and although he had the Ifil/Morrison moment against Fiorentina, he's been pretty good whenever he has played - all my Liverpool supporting mates recon its a good move for him to come to us and get squad time, if not match time.

I hope he is more of a Ward and not a Hutchinson though, otherwise i can go put my head through a shredder :)

Title: Re: Stephen darby

It isn't only a question of his ability, it's his attitude as well. I remember a Liverpool defender we had on loan in the 90's called Nicky Tanner. He went on to make a fair few appearances for them, this at a time when they weren't as shite as they are now.

He was utter, utter, utter wank for us.

Some loanees, particularly from the top flight, seem to think turning out for a League One club is a beneath them. Either that or they feel they don't need to try very hard as their 'superior' ability will shine through.

Whatever, I hope he's more like Ward and less like Hutchinson.....

(Didn't read the post above before I commented. Spooky!)

They've got a heap of quality players in their system. think they've made three of the last four FAYC Finals. They've got Paul Ince's son Thomas there. Quite different to his dad, a quality winger who can play upfront. He'll be a big player in the future i'm sure.

They've also got a finish lad Lauri Dalla Valle, very highly-rated striker but i think his progress has stalled a touch recently and Daniel Pachecho is the one who they've fast-tracked instead.

I'd have them both.
