Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 13:17:31 Not a Mohammed, Izrak, or Faizan in sight....not to mention a Dipak, Sanjay, or Parvinder.
When will football reach out to the Asian community? Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: iffy on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 13:18:20 You've got Jack, which is short for John and Teddy is short for Edward.
Two Sams as well. It's not quite "kings + queens and names from the bible", but it's not so far off. That said, whoever named their child after a brand of sunglasses or the german word for travel needs a word in their ear. Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: Talk Talk on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 13:18:59 Samuel/Sam, Jack and Luci are ok.
You have to assume that the parents of the other children don't really like them much. 'Oakley' ::) Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: tans on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 13:21:56 Isnt STFCLady a bit old to be doing a toddlers football course? ;)

When will football reach out to the Asian community? Closed shop the Asian football team, all for one and one for all as long as you dont mix with other children from different creeds. Sure that will bring a comment, que Talk Talk! I've tried working it out with maths, but it's not adding up. I know this to be true, but like spacey, I can't quite get it. Now, if it was short for Bob, well fair enough. Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: spacey on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 13:43:46 As in John F Kennedy was know as Jack by his family. I think my calculator is broken. Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: Talk Talk on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 13:48:22 I think my calculator is broken. Probably not. Try pressing the 'nickname' button, rather than the 'short for' button. Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: Arriba on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 13:55:13 asian lads are mad on football.most of them just seperate themselves from the others and keep it to themselves.
take st josephs school for instance.they have asian only football matches there. take a walk around the couty ground on a sunday.there will be asain lads having a kick about for sure. Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: spacey on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 14:20:06 Probably not. Try pressing the 'nickname' button, rather than the 'short for' button. What a swizz! I wasn't questioning it as a nickname. Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: nevillew on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 14:48:17 As in John F Kennedy was know as Jack by his family. More pertinently, John Charlton is generally known as Jack. I think Jack has now become a name in it's own right, and would appear as such on a birth certificate. Yeah, always see a few some having a kick about outside the DRS. However, I cant say I see many asians actually inside the County Ground. Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: Peter Venkman on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 15:29:38 my old mans called roman. And what to you nickname your balls? ;) Actually my old best mate was called Roman (quite a commonish name for Polish people I understand), he used to live in Tydeman Street in Gorse Hill. I've tried working it out with maths, but it's not adding up. Yeah....how do you account for someone like Jean-Jacques Rousseau? Jean is clearly French for John and Jacques is clearly French for Jack...so does that make him Jean Jean Rousseau....does it fuck he was Jean-Jacques Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 16:03:29 .take st josephs school for instance.they have asian only football matches there. Jean is clearly French for John and Jacques is clearly French for Jack...so does that make him Jean Jean Rousseau....does it fuck he was Jean-Jacques It isn't derived from French apparently. Quote John is a name with history stretching back far into Biblical times. However, during medieval times, the name John was altered slightly in the Germanic tongues to Jankin or Jackin. Out of that, we get the nickname Jack. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/513387/nicknames_how_john_became_jack_and.html?cat=37 (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/513387/nicknames_how_john_became_jack_and.html?cat=37) Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: Simon Pieman on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 17:58:50 Reg didn't say it was derived from French.
Don't worry Reg, it made me chuckle :) Title: Re: Names - sign of the times Post by: wiggy on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, 19:56:00 Jack is a mad name...

However, I cant say I see many asians actually inside the County Ground. Leicester are the only club I can think of that have a reasonably sized asian fan base. Blades and Leeds up here have a fair few asian fans but Leicester seem to have mad a bit of an effort to include that section of their local community.
