Title: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: DV on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 18:38:06 Some boring and slightly surprising figures.
After 29 league games and all the cup games last season - Simon Cox had scored 19 goals with Billy Paynter chipping in with 8. A total of 27. In the end they finished with 32+12=44 After 29 league games and all the cup games this season - Billy Paynter has 19 goals with Charlie Austin contributing 12. A total of 31. Just rough stats, as neither take into account the amount of games played by each player - or silly things like Jack Smith being the penalty taker for a chunk of last season and the fact we have a much better team this year playing better and creating more chances. Surprised Billy and Charlie are ahead, but Cox had a pretty good run just after this getting another 12 in the final 17 games. Do you think Paynter and Austin can beat a combined total of 44 goals this season? Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: Arriba on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 18:47:02 yes

Not only is that in the wrong thread, but it is also in the wrong forum. Oh deary me! Totally blown away by Austin though who has scored a goal every 93.5 minutes - and he is now the leagues 9th top scorer.
If together they don't beat last seasons 44 goals I reckon we can kiss promotion good bye as we're heavily reliant upon them at the moment. I reckon they'll do it easily - 50 between them for the season. Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 21:01:20 Totally blown away by Austin though who has scored a goal every 93.5 minutes - and he is now the leagues 9th top scorer. Only the 9th top scorer?? What a waste of money ::)Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: Simon Pieman on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 21:03:16 Austin's been cup tied as well.
Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 22:44:06 Austin's been cup tied as well. Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: jonny72 on Saturday, February 13, 2010, 23:12:59 Austin's been cup tied as well. Only for the FA Cup though, he played in the Mickey Mouse Tin Pot Trophy. In fact he was on the pitch for 25 minutes against Norwich and didn't score, which practically means its his fault we're not going to Wembley. Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: Reg Smeeton on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 00:20:24 Austin is doing well...his 12 in his first 14 is exactly the same as Bill Stephens managed in 46/47...Stephens started the season mind and went on to score 26..the joint record for many years until surpassed by Cox.
Bill was sold on to West Ham as a consequence and did bugger all afterwards. Harry Morris managed 16 in his first 14...and went on to score 47 that season. Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: adje on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 10:39:44 I reckon Coxy missed a lot more chances than Austin does-but does that mean Cox worked harder to get the opportunities because as has been mentioned we are now playing better football?
Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: Luci on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 10:45:56 Cox scored some wonder goals but missed a few sitters too. Austin on the other hand is incredibly clinical and i'd fancy him to score on almost every clear cut opportunity he has in front of goal. Cox's missed chances were cancelled out by his moments of brilliance as last season, we were hardly a particularly creative team and he had to make his chances himself.
Had we not got a much better midfield this year, I'd be interested to see how Charlie would have managed. (Not saying that he's not capable) but the service he and Billy are getting this year is far better than Billy and Cox had last year) Its hard to compare them but I'd like to think this years partnership will beat the 44 that were scored last season. Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: Phil_S on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 10:55:26 The critical thing is that last season we were looking for Cox to score. Billy P would work hard but didn't score enough so defenders were most concerned about the one player.
This season is totally different. They are both on hot streaks leaving defenders with the problem of worrying about both of them equally. It would be nice if Charlie got a hat trick soon, just to get back to a goal a game ratio. Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 12:07:21 That's true Phil. Also I think there has been a lot of hype about Charlie recently that teams are trying to mark him out (Charlton have been the only team to manage it successfully really) and that leaves Billy with a bit more freedom.
Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: Tails on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 12:19:26 I thought Paynter scored 14 last season?
Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: leefer on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 12:49:38 Is it my imagination or has most of Charlies goals been fairly early in matches..not all i know,as he gets stronger and used to the rigours of pro football he is going to score shedloads.
Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: reeves4england on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 13:03:48 Is it my imagination or has most of Charlies goals been fairly early in matches..not all i know,as he gets stronger and used to the rigours of pro football he is going to score shedloads. When he first joined there was a pattern of Billy scoring first every week and Charlie getting the second. Recently he has scored quite a few early goals though.Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, February 14, 2010, 13:06:16 I only recall Austin missing one clear cut chance against Charlton at home. Such a good finisher.

Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: carbonwhite on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, 16:43:29 paynter has nearly 9 years of expierance which is why you would consider him a veteran. and this season would be the first time hes surpassed his best season of 13 goals hopefully he and austin will continue banging in the goals
Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: DV on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, 17:00:33 Parkin and Mooney got a total of 43 in our play off season.
After all the cup (not inc play offs) and 29 league games they had a total of 29. Title: Re: Cox & Paynter Vs Paynter & Austin Post by: DV on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, 17:12:37 Also, just had a look - in the league Charlie Austin has had 24 shots (17 on 7 off) and has 12 goals out of that, thats some ratio!
If we compare that to the divisions top scorer, Richard Lambert he has had 91 shots (49 on 42 off) and has scored 19 goals. Beckford 103 shots (56 on 47 off) 18 goals |
