Getting relegated from this Div is definitely the worst experience I've had as an STFC fan, and all the signs are pointing to a season of stuggle.

  I accept that we are essentially a Div 3 club who has the odd foray upwards, so when we go back down after one of these its the natural order of things.....but we'd had a couple of scrapes before and survived...but when it happened in 81/82 it was truly shocking that within 13 years; a side that could win a major trophy and knock on the door of the top flight....was in fact in  the basement.

 Still, I truncated a holiday in Ireland to pedal back from the Rose of Tralee early, so that I could make the Div 4 opener v Port vale and would doubtless do similar again.

I take it you mean we are a third tier club, not a 4th division club Reg surely, or am I, for once being an optimist?  I can't accept we're a bottom level club.

I agree even if we sell Parkin, fallon and roberts aren't the worse in the league and the defence is not bad at all, midfield needs a couple of new players but it wasn't that great anyway.

Although Reg is often right and knows his stuff, he was predicting a relegation battle last season before the Peterborough away game and we were never even close so I'm hoping he's being overly pessimistic now.

I think it'll be an interesting season anyway and the next few weeks should be too.

The main thing about a league like ours is that most of the teams are evenly matched,and whether you're on the up or down can tend to hinge around a few key games at crucial times.  Torquay and the Dongs for example only lost 2 more games than us and without Wrexham's unfortunate problem's both would have gone.

 At the time of the PBoro match we were a point better off than Oldham, but despite their excellent cup win they had to go to the wire to stay up......we managed to have a little run of wins which got us moving again before tailing off.
 
 As things stand given the constraints of wages, we know next season's squad is going to youthful, inexperienced and low on numbers...and -SSP.   Think you need to be :nuts: to anticipate anything other than a difficult season.

I'm confident we'll do ok next season, King will find some decent players over the summer, and I think we'll end up top half.
Hope some youngsters get a decent chance as well, not just a game here
and there ( as long as they're good enough of course). :twisted:

I refuse to make a prediction until we see who King brings in. No point making a clouded judgement. Sure, we have a shoestring for a wage (not transfer) budget, but then, thats been the case for several years, and we're still holding our own (penises :soapy tit wank: ) Lets not get glum too soon.... :wink:

I see no reason why people are so pessimistic.

We could be looking at a mid-table season at worst if King can get it right.

May not be as bad as some are making out, however it may well turn out to be a season of struggle, but I would bet on us to stay up.

I will be more than happy with 20th if every single player puts in 100% every time. That's all I ask as a true fan.

I too am going to wait and see who King manages to bring in.Its gone quiet on the Lee Holmes situation(if,indeed ,there is one).If we can get him to replaceSmith/Howard I'll be a little happier.

Just had a thought on Holmes, if he really wants to come here on loan he could tell whoever the new manager is that he's not ready for Championship football, and would benefit hugely from a season on loan at Swindon.  :mrgreen:

I'm not sure that a teenage lad, would go up to his new boss and have the balls to say that he didn't think he was good enough for this level! I would imagine that the manager would decide who will be loaned out, so unless Derby appoint someone within the next couple of weeks, its unlikely that we'll be seeing Holmes whipping balls in from the left wing, until well into the next campaign, after the new boss has had a look at him

Derbys new bloke may make that decision himself once pre-season training has begun.

You have to be a special talent to be a first teamer at Holmes age and any new bloke may think a season at a lower level could do him some good.

The problem is that Holmes IS a special talent, as proven by his international appearances.

Not necessarily. Okay he has been a great player for us and scored a lot of goals, but we have only needed them because the defence has been so shocking. If we can concede less goals next year with a stronger back line then maybe there will be less need for strikers and Fallon and Roberts may prove perfectly adequate.

I think we will finish between 7th and 12th

Going down this season i think will be scunny, colchester, dons and chestefield.... we will finish about same as this season.... i think fallon and caton could work together well, just because they are the complete opposite, Parkin will go to Ipswich, and Igoe will stay, JUST....... and yet again we will be bowing down to kingy's brilliant loan signings and we will have at least one more lee holmes again

Don't be too sure of the loan signings. Kingy said they're difficult to come by now.

Every side in this league is shit. Utterly, utterly uncomprehendably shit. The sides that do well are those that want it the most. If the Swindon players are totally committed they'll stay up. Relatively easily.

I still think we have a basis of a good team and there was plenty of time for new signings.

I'm doing  well with my other predictions, Arsenal outside the top 4, Spurs in the top 4, Bristol City not to be promoted, Crouchy having another great season  and Swansea for the league one title which I put a 35/1 bet on. All look very plausible.
