Recommend one to me...

Needs to be a thin one so I can fit into a pocket. I've got £80ish to spend.

Personally I like the Cannon Ixus range for small fit in your pocket type cameras and have had a couple of them over the years.  Bought a Cannon G9 a couple of years ago and that takes amazing photos but a bit big to slip into a pocket.

For 80 quid maybe it's worth buying a second hand one.

Amazon have a huge sale on their cameras right now, there are loads on there at half price.

I've got an ixus. It's great in good light but not so good in poor light, you often get red eye. Probably one of the best for around that price though and it it's quite thin.

I'm interested in getting a Digital SLR camera.
I've never used one before, so I want quite a basic/cheap one to start with.
Has anyone got any suggestions or recommendations?

I'm by no means an expert, but for a DSLR you can't go wrong with a Canon EOS.

I've no direct experience of the Sony range, but their lenses are made by Zeiss (very well reknowned manufacturer) and are good quality. IMO, its not necessarily the camera that is important, but the quality of glass you stick on the front.

My advice is to pop into somewhere like Jessops (or an independent dealer if there is one local to you), have a play with the Canon, Nikon and Sony offerings at the budget end, decide which one you like the best, then shop for the best deal on the net. Don't buy from Jessops if you can help it. You won't go wrong with any of those three brands and there is loads of support out there.

FWIW, I have Canon gear (40D and 350D) and have been very happy with the results.

Get an iphone 4, they can do everything, with added aids goodness.

Can't be arsed with all this Iphone bullshit, never really got into mobile phones.
I have one that makes phoncalls, that's good enough for me.

I picked up a Canon EOS 450D with 18-55mm and extra 55-250mm zoom lens for £469 from Jessops (online offer) so don't rule them out entirely. 

Got to say I've been more than happy with it but would agree that the lens is what makes the most difference between good and excellent photos, not the camera body.

Seems quite cheap. Not sure what its like though.

The Canon 450D is a good two generations old now, so frankly should be a bloody sight cheaper than that, and frankly the lens plonked on the front is naff.

I don't know much about the D3000, but that looks a cracking good price compared to the 450D.


Its part of the equation. Equipment, be it camera, lens etc is important, but an eye for composition and competent execution are equally important. I've seen some right crap produced from so-called quality equipment (myself included) and equally some great shots from much lesser gear.......
