Me and my mate hopefully going just wondering how many others thinking about it, I really think the FA and FIFA have wildly over estimated the amount fans who are going to travel to this not just from England but the rest of Europe.

Given the small time difference, I think there could be quite a lot of fans travelling down for short breaks of a couple of days - maybe over a weekend - and then heading back.  Sounds far fetched, but quite do-able if you manage to get your hands on a few tickets.

expense is putting me off. Even a weekend trip gonna be a coupla grand.

I did Germany and Portugal and seeing the draw for this excited me and made me want to go. But wanting to go and actually doing it have quite different effects on a bank account that doesn't lend itself to jet-setting.

ha ha. if it's in europe there are ways and means of doing it on the cheap. Not South Africa.

The prices of flights are just ridiculous at the moment I am pretty sure they will come down when the realisation dawns on them that people wont pay it, emirates want £3,200 return to cape town fucking bonkers.

Cost of flights from here to Joburg went up 50% when the Swissies qualified so I'm going via Dubai to Durban - still over £1,000 though.

I've not looked in to this, but have you considered flying to Botswana or Namibia and driving down?  Windhoek to Johannesburg, for example, looks about 700 miles.  A long way, but from my limited experience of driving in South Africa, shouldn't be too much hassle.

Yep, I will be there :)  Am watching Netherlands v Cameroon, England v ASlgeria, and a 2nd Round game which should in all probability be Spain v Portugal :)

All the above games are in Cape Town, and it's handy seeing as I live in Cape Town :D

Was going to but mates bottled it over worrying about crime etc and all that. Plus the cost up to 5K for decent hotel, flights and match tickets... a bit steep.

Agreed, watching England away has been shite since 2000ish.  Get on the cricket tour, less facepaint and corporate rubbish to deal with.  That said having watched England at every major comp (except Japan – no great loss) since 92, I guarantee we’ll do well.  SA is an ace country too.

It's way too much for a few weeks off and a few games of football. No thanks.

Ideally you want to fly to Joburg from Cape Town.  The N1 will take you all the way there if you want to drive, but you are looking at at least 10 or 11 hour drive, minimum.  As for trains, umm, no idea.  Never caught a train between the two cities.

theres plenty of stories about the poor take up from Europe - Holland sold 2-3,000 of their 21,000 group allocation and the Krauts 1,000 of 21,000 , nort surprising given the cost
