Title: Swindon V Charlton Matchday Thread.
Post by: herthab on Saturday, December 26, 2009, 04:37:42
Really looking forward to this one.

I'll take a point at the Valley, but who knows?

1-2 to Swindon, with the usual suspects on the scoresheet.

Low expectations for this, so a point would be a great result. Enjoy the game!

I can't be doing with early starts on Boxing day.

Not confident of a win, will take a draw.

My expectation is a 2-0 loss, anything better than that will be a nice surprise.

Would love a draw but its going to be a 3-0 defeat I am afraid.

1pm on a Boxing Day is just fucking wrong.

Millwall scored four there....if the defence can do what theyve done in the main this season we may sneak a draw.....a win would really get the fans buzzing.

Seeing as Morgan spent the whole time talking to Fitton about Austin i'd guess not. I think one of the Sodje's was injured and being treated.

Seems reasonably quiet so far.

Looks right now - after the sending off.

actually i'm going to disagree with you and myself (no i'm not! yes i am etc)

i don't think bringing someone on when they're only going to put 8/9 behind the ball will mean that o'briens horrendous touch will make it easier for us to score

i wait to be proven wrong (no i don't, etc)

Now I have a very good feeling. When Scunthorpe went down to 9 men we destroyed them in the last 30 minutes.

Don't see any reason to change anything yet, just keep plugging away and wait for the goals.

Douglas clears off the line, Sodje (the one who hasn't been sent off) putting in a real shift up front.

"O'Brien's touch let him down" seems to be becoming Morgan's catchphrase, sadly.

Title: Re: Swindon V Charlton Matchday Thread.

having seen how long they had 9 men for that's an awful result.
points are all that matters come may though.hopefully that wont equate to 2 points lost come then.

were we happy to sit back on a narrow lead today? i've seen this already this season so i wouldn't be surprised.
if it was a case of simply not being good enough to break 9 men down, then at least we will know where we are as a team.

Its swings and roundabouts really

When we went down to 10 men against Millwall, Millwall battered us but we somehow managed to grab a point.

The reverse has happened today and unfortunately we dropped 2 points

Just hoping the team are still in high spirts and the late goal doesnt result in us losing morale

Unlike most i'm happy with the point.I honestly believe 12 months ago we would not of even got back in the game let alone take the lead. Make no mistake that was still 9 very good players we were up against.

Any other team i would be like most people and not be happy but even with results like today it is in my opinion showing we have made a marked improvement.

Don't care how many players they were down to it is a point extra than i thought we would get

Title: Re: Swindon V Charlton Matchday Thread.

I fancied us to get a draw today before everything and would have taken a point.

I can see DRS point of view, Charlton are a good side and Jonjoe Shelvey is much too good for league one. I still think a team with 11 men should beat a team with 9 men.

We scored our 2nd goal too early! Charlton has nothing to lose so bombed forward last 10 minutes.

Their defenders who didnt get sent off played very well and on a few occasions threw themselvesinfront of shots like their life depended on. In some aspects it reminded me of that game we had against Swansea when Corr got himself sent off.

Last minute though, so so gutting.

....and is it just me? it maybe a biased thing but does every single team in this division go down like they have been shot everytime our defenders touch them?

Greer seems to giving away countless fouls and alot of the time he is just standing his ground. At one Lescinal headed the ball clear and still managed to give away a free kick.

I swear I dont remember seeing Austin and Paynter going down like that, not all the time. Sodje must have had the trainer on about 3 times.  I understand at 1-0 up its time wasting but we just seem to give away alot of phantom free kicks and get next to nothing in return.

The free kick that lead to their equalizer was nothing as well.

...oh and even though he had loads of time and space out the wing, more so than he would usually I thought O'Brien looked dangerous and he put in alot of crosses.

Hopefully we've yet to see the best of him.

Just got back... So so gutted. that said, If Charlton didnt have the 2 men sent off they would have battered us. Was a great day until the last 30 seconds :( Ok we probably didn't deserve 3 points but most of us expected to get dicked so taking the lead we were on cloud 9.

Just how good is Charlie Austin? I figuered no way he will score against Charlton but had a good run.

Charlton were a very good attacking team and will get promoted easily IMO.

Taking Ferry off confused me a bit and why LJF did not come off at half time I will never know. I am convinced Hutchinson is THE WORST player I have ever seen at STFC (Mikolanda, Collins, Slabber where shit but atleast they put some effort in, they were just shit footballers), Lazy fucker with no desire what so ever, even with Wilson having a go at him he just stood there. Lazy cunt and I hope he goes in January. Would rather had Revell on.

I loved the Valley, the stadium, everything about it was top notch, the music, even the "do not swear" adds were funny as fuck, Friendly place would love to see us redevelop out place similar to it ;) , Police were well OTT outside but rumours were Bristol City were heading over apparently to "meet up", I did see 2 riot vans with blues and twos going as we left...

Well what an anti-climax. We had that game in the bag as soon as we scored the 2nd. Sadly we made a mistake and that was that. We should have won but it could have easily been the other way around in the last 2 games if Brighton had equalised and we held on today. I think it's a good result anyhow. You can't moan about a point away to the 2nd placed team. It's a shame that some of the fans that didn't go with conclude that it was a shit result and that we are indeed shite and doomed for failure. We played well today. I'll give Charlton credit where credit is due at least they stuck at it and gave it a go with 9 men. Roll on Yeovil!

The silly thing is when it was 11 v 11 we were the better team yet when they went down to 10 and then 9 we really struggled. The 2nd half we had a gameplan which would have worked if Kev hadn't have made a mistake. Shit happens. I wasn't too impressed with Charlton other than their fighting spirit and determination to not give in. As a footballing side they didn't show a huge amount even before the red cards.

Not sure what to make of today's game, it was an odd one to say the least! I'm not too angry, perhaps because I would gladly have taken a point before the game, and perhaps also because I've come to expect this sort of thing from Swindon. Watch us do Fulham over with 10 men next week ;)

Initially I thought the first red card was harsh, I thought it was a bad late tackle worthy of a booking, but a lot of people have said it was two footed, in which case he deserved to go. As for the second, Burton had been warned and then eventually booked for persistently showing dissent. His second yellow was not for a foul on the keeper or for dissent, as various people have said. It was in fact for blatant cheating - trying to score with a deliberate handball. Charlton can have no complaints, and the fact they clapped him off was a disgrace.

In the second half it was very interesting to watch how Wilson set us out to play - how do you play against 9 men? I think he got it totally right. Our defence set up camp on the half way line, and just picked out wide players to exploit the huge gaps on the wings. At times Charlton were struggling to get out of their own third of the pitch and eventually Charlie popped up to tap home a cross from Amankwaah before laying it off for Paynter to make it 2-1. We were playing very sensibly, using O'Brien, JPM, Amankwaah and Sheehan to good effect. Unfortunately we seemed to decide 2-1 was enough. Although we didn't need to press forward any more we lost all sense of urgency in attack, as though the game was won. We were punished by a very good finish (for a centre half) right at the death. I suppose you have to say it's our own fault for not killing the game off.

If we beat Yeovil and put in a good shift at Fulham, that late equaliser will be a distant memory. Heopfully we've a good week ahead of us!

PS, can we have a whip round for Hutchison's plane ticket back to Glasgow? I didn't understand why he was in the squad, I didn't understand why Wilson brought him on, and I still can't understand how this guy is a professional footballer when he clearly couldn't care less. If he put as much effort into chasing the ball as he does arguing with the officials then he might be a decent player.

I am so annoyed with him, it was him that gave away that free kick that lead to their goal, why bring him on when he doesn't give a shit? If he's on the bench on Monday I will not be best pleased! He's getting paid to do what, sit on the bench sometimes and laze about at training, a lot of Swindon fan's made the effort to get to that match today, shame he couldn't put in one bloody ounce of effort, bloody idiot.

Agree but he shouldn't be soley blamed for the goal. At the end of the day it was Amankwaah's fault. Hutchinson proved today why he hasn't been in the squad for so long. He's lazy and doesn't give a shit.

It was the only thing Danny got wrong today. I guess we don't have a lot of options on the right but why not bring Timlin on for Ferry and keep JP out wide? I'm not a huge Timlin fan but that would have been a better option than sticking a lazy "striker" out wide right. Hell even putting on Revell in that position would have been better. At least Revell puts in the effort.

I think there's more that meets the eye with the Hutchinson sub decision, like others mentioned having to get a look in based on loan terms agreed?

All in all, he's shite, lazy, a liability and his attitude stinks.  Here's hoping he plays no further part for us. The way he had a pop at the lino today was disgraceful.

Does anybody know what Burton was actually sent off for? At the time I thought he got a second yellow for handball, because he quite clearly deliberately handballed it as he challenged Lucas. But the official site said it was for his challenge on Lucas, and Parkinson has come out and said it was an "innocuous incident"...

Hutchinson is gone after the next game isn't he?

In fact aren't Revell, Ward and Sheehan going too?

There are many things you can say about Hutchinson but blaming him for the second goal?

He gave away a free kick, fucking hell must be the first player to ever do that. Lets not forget the free kick was closer to Charltons goal than ours!!

Charlton had alot to do from that free kick to make it towards are goals. 10 other players out there.

Also, disgrace because he had a go at the linesman? again, he isnt the first and wont be the last. Its a frustrating game when decisions go against you. I've shouted plenty of abuse at linesman plenty of times in shit unimportant games that dont mean anything to anyone!!!

If I had to take a guess I'd say the reasoning behind brining him on was Wilson wanted the option to go 4-3-3 and/or stick with a 4-4-2. None of Revell, Paynter or Austin can go wide right.

We got the goals, so there was no need to ever go 4-3-3 so Hutchinson stayed wide right.

The sub that baffled me more was bringing on Danny Ward for Charlie Austin. We were 2-1 to the good and Wilson would have known Charlton would have thrown everything forward for the last 10, hell they took of their right back to bring on a striker. At that point he should have bought on Timlin and stuck 5 in midfield. Hutchinson, JPM, Douglas, Timlin, O'Brien and just tried to block Charlton out of the game.

Instead he stuck with 4-4-2 on the assumption Charlton wouldnt come back into it.

Of course its all well and good in hindsight and had Wilson bought on Timlin and we'd still drawn 2-2 I suppose I'd be saying he should have stayed 4-4-2 and gone for a 3rd.

They had the goals and red cards on SSN. Looked like it was for handball, I didn't see a foul on Lucas.

Whilst we did piss away 2 points today, we're not doing it as much as we did last season. Plus we're going to be around the playoffs come the end of the year and the half way point in the season, so I don't think we can really complain. If we're in with a shout for the playoffs come the final month of the season it will be a result.

Cold meat and cheese last night and now i have got the shits...so up early..

Enjoyed yesterday but when you let in a 94th minute goal to nine men you feel like you have lost, however, i would of taken a draw before the kick off for sure.

My day started badly having overslept and set off at 10 from the metropolis of Calne...this left me with a problem....do i go along the south bank or M25 and Swanley...it was going to be tight but it seemed i made the wrong decision as the M25 was at a standstill from the M23 onwards so i had to go up through Croyden etc etc....got to Charlton at 3:14 and bribed a nice steward to park in a disabled bay.

Missed kick off but saw it all.....

I will not mark players but will boil it all down to my view which is:

Hutchinson was a massive blunder for Wilson - for the season and for this match, although Charlton had 9, i felt we only had 10 when he came on....total fucking disaster of a player...I thought Macklin would of done better on the wing and pulled Charlton apart on both wings.

Anyway - hey ho - I feel alot better than i did last year - except the shits......roll on Yeovil and the giant piss up at Fulham...

NB - I drove to Chatham after the match to pick up my daughter for the holidays.....why then, did i beat the Coaches back to swindon??  Over took em at the Marlborough junction....

In my post I was referring to the manner in which he seemed to lose it. Of course it happens all the time and I'm not overly fussed about that but the way he laid into him was well over the top.

I dont want to see our players picking up silly bookings like that and all in all, the discipline in the team seems much improved than in previous years. I for one would like it to stay that way.

We definitely need some signings in January.

The 11 that started the game, with he exception of LJF, are more than capable of competing in League 1 but our bench is woefully short on quality.

Hutchinson is a lazy cunt and clearly has no desire to play for us, whether he is here for a few more games or not, he should never be picked again.

We need a leftback and a forward as a minium.

Enjoyed the game, their equaliser was gutting, but overall it was a good game with lots of incidents.

Didn't enjoy the fuckwit policewoman, the cunt of a steward who said I could go out of the ground at halftime to move the minibus but I couldn't come back in and the wanker driver of the Barnes coach I parked in front of at halftime. A professional driver who can't reverse? made me miss the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half.

At least we got something out of the game, when we were 1-0 down I wasn't sure we would. Little consolation for the fans though, a win would have still been flattering (not that I'd particularly care).

Yesterday was the first time I've really bemoaned Wilson's tactical changes and they contributed to the result. However, like all the goals we've conceded recently, the whole team stands off the opposition. We really need to sort it because we're no longer tough to play against I'm afraid.

As Luci said-it must be contractual for Hutchinson to have come on.Surely Macklin would have been the obvious replacement if we needed a replacement at all-Ferry and Douglas were running the show and JP was a constant threat on the right.I got the feeling that Austin asked to come off as a result of a tackle (which should have been a free kick)on the edge of their box.As IOB said we were the better team 11 v 11.The only change that was necessary was JFL who had a shocker-but that should have been done as soon as they went down to 9 in my opinion.Cant agree with the"would have settled for that before the game"sentiment-that goes out the window when you're playing against 9 men for the best part of an hour.Douglas, once again,MOM for me and OB a close second-if only he'd been on longer.

That's what Vic said on the radio. Wilson says he should be fine for tomorrow

Quote
Charlie came off but he will be fine for Monday. He got stood on so it's only a little injury but nothing that will keep him out for Monday.

Saw the goals on TV. Burton was sent for a deliberate handball which is a second yellow so neither red were undeserved.

Looked like Amankwha was asleep for the equaliser, regardless of what Hutchinson did.

Bad result given Charlton were down to 10 as early as 18 minutes. So close to a good one though. Bring on the yeovil.

I was on the coaches, First reason was because 2 kids fucked off for half hour 40 minutes after the game and didn't tell anyone so we couldnt go until they were on the coaches. The OB wanted us to fuck off but we couldn't. Second reason we drove through Lewisham, Hammersmith etc instead of heading out to the M25 and around and traffic was stopped most of the way.

You should read the league paper-you'd expect that to be accurate but in there OBrien was an unused sub and Lescinel and Hutchinson got more points out of ten than Douglas!

I, like everyone else, still can't see what Wilson must see in Hutchinson. I can't understand why he hasn't gone back to Celtic either, his loan spell has been a disaster and you'd think it would be in his and Celtic's best interests for him to return. Wasn't he closer to the Celtic 1st team than Ferry when he came here?

Title: Re: Swindon V Charlton Matchday Thread.

I think the obvious answer is that we're trying to keep Celtic sweet, seing as how we got Cuthbert off them and we'd love to keep Ferry longer than the loan term.

We've already got Cuthbert, and we've already extended Ferry's loan. I suppose there's an argument for saying we need to keep them sweet for possible future deals, and for potentially getting Ferry here more permanently, but I think Wilson would be totally within his rights to explain to Celtic that Hutchison has come here and looked totally disinterested, offered nothing, and has struggled to push for a place in the team. If he sent him back saying "He's crap, we don't want him" then it'd be a different story.

Not according to a few Celtic fans that posted on the BBC or TFF.

They were unanimous in their praise for Ferry, and thought that he just needed games.

Hutchinson on the other hand was labelled lazy, useless and generally on his way out of Celtic.

I know this is only fans opinions, but it does seem to reinforce what we all now think.

As for yesterday, it was probably the most disappointed I have left a game that we haven’t lost.
Cheating Sodje gave Greer a really hard time, but in fairness I thought he (Greer) coped pretty well with it and played much better that he has of late.
As I think everyone else agrees, bringing on Hutchinson did appear to be an odd substitution, unless it is a contractual thing. As for the other subs it was pretty much what we would have expected. I think that JFL didn’t come off at half time as Wilson wanted to see if Charlton were going to change things before making his switch. As for Charlie, he was obviously struggling, and it made no sense to risk him making an injury worse.

That still makes sense, as thats what Wilson usually does. Timlins talent aside Wilson is still likely to use him as a sub.

As Luci said-it must be contractual for Hutchinson to have come on.

I doubt it. That was his first league game since October

Agree with some comments about yesterdays game but blaming Hutchinson for the draw if frankly ridiculous. I agree he gives us next to nothing and although he may deserve his scapegoat status, mainly due to his laziness, yesterday was down to a combination of other factors.
I thought we were the better side in the first 20 minutes and was unimpressed with Charlton as they seemed to be only capable of playing route one football for a good chunk of the game (even when they had 11 on the pitch) but we never took full advantage. Although our build up play (as usual) was decent, once 2-1 up we seemed to decide to try to walk the ball in. Plenty of opportunities to shoot from the edge of the box were wasted in favour of delicate chips into the box which went straight to their keeper or were over hit. Not sure why Ferry was subbed but would have preferred Macklin on as his replacement as at least he has a go when he has the chance. The game should have been out of sight before injury time. We also seemed not to use O'Brien as much as we could have and although he seems to have the touch of a rapist was in acres of room
that afforded him not needing a great first touch.
Pleased for Charlie and Billy getting on the score sheet but couldn't understand some stupid cow behind me slagging Painter off as if he was solely to blame for the draw.
Agree also that a win tomorrow will make this all the more bearable (even if I did lose my fiver at 14/1 for 2-1 to Town).

I've spoken to a few people since I got back who said that it was a very dissapointing performance not to be able to beat 9 men, but I thought that Town did most things very well, and that Charlton defended very well and obviously have quality.

Charlton were a big bunch of lads, and had some very neat and tidy players, but as said above they didn't really look like a great footballing side, even when they had 11 on the pitch.  Shelvey is going to be a very good player and their giant centre-back Llera is pretty good too.

Both red cards were fully deserved (I've not seen them again yet, but the first was late and two-footed and the second was pure stupidity.  How the Charlton fans clapped off Burton I don't know!) but Charlton worked very hard for the remainder of the first half and did very well to not look too over-run.  Second half Town exploited the extra spaces muh better and did very well at both keeping the ball and probing into dangerous areas, but seemed to refuse to have a shot!  Instead we kept putting it wide an lobbing it up for their team of giants to head clear or for the keeper to claim unchallenged.  The goals came from balls driven into the box lower and with more pace, rather than floated up.

Where the ref got 4 minutes of injury time from in the second half is a mystery, but we were bloody unlucky with the way they got the equaliser, with a couple of very, very soft free-kicks going against us and then Ward (who I thought had a good little cameo) tried to block the clearance, got a little nick on it, Kev just misjudged it and Llera finished very cooly.  The bastard.

Overall, a good performance, good control of the game, just a shame we couldn't take a few more risks in the final third to put the game to bed int he last 15 minutes.  Bring on Yeovil!

Havnt had a computer for a few days, but Im still fuming with the Hutchinson substitution. He is so fucking slow, in the head and in his legs. People say he isnt interested, Ive seen him when he wasnt interested at Wrexham, and he was absolutely dire, one of the worst performances by a Swindon player Ive seen for a few years. He was interested on Boxing day, but he just isnt up to it. He has to track everything back, he never plays a first time ball, he never gets a shot in, and he never gambles like a striker should.

Hes fucking rubbish. If we had Ward or Macklin come on Boxing day Im sure we would have got the 3rd goal (or even a 4th) and that would have been game over. Hutchinson shouldnt be making the match day squad at the moment, let alone actually getting game time (tears hair out).

Credit to Charlton though. The way they played showed a real team spirit and commitment. They knew how to get something out of the game, keep the game with just 1 goal in it, and save themselves for some desperate attacking in the last 10 minutes. That Shelvey is a fantastic prospect, only young and a very exciting player. Loves to take players on, a real crowd pleaser, up and down the field, good shot. He's going places.

I really enjoyed the trip to Charlton. The Valley is a great ground, full of character right in the middle of the Charlton area, was great walking out down old school roads, so much nicer than coming out of places like Wigan. Would be great if the County Ground could be developed similar to something Charlton have.

I realise this Spence. Obviously we don't need to develop the ground to the size of Charlton's, but something similar to their blueprint on a smaller scale would be good.

Was drinking in the Rose of Denmark before the game and the owner (I think) came up to us when he saw our Swindon shirts and shook all of our hands and welcomed us to Charlton. Unusual for Football fans to be treated so well.
