With frost it all depend what has happened two or three days prior. It wouldn't need a lot of covering of the pitch to ensure the game goes ahead.
We cant afford to get any further behind in the fixture list.

Annoying if it is. At least I should get to see the Charlton game if it is called off, they've got Undersoil heating.

Frost covers are good to -3 or -4 from memory. If we are using them that is. I think they were hired in for the snow game that never was last season.

It better not be, I am booked onto specific trains and spending a saturday in Swindon is not neccessarily my most favourite prospect to be honest! As the King was saying somewhere else, the condition of the Don Rogers stand might be a problem aswell, and the surrounding area. That's a pain, hopefully the game goes ahead on the day.

Of course, it wouldn't be the first time a game between us was off due to the weather. I wonder if we'll get as far into this one, as we did into that one....  :D

There are only enough covers to do 3/4 of the pitch. If it gets into the ground on fri night we're in trouble. The side of the DRS will be covered though and taken off sat morning.

BBC preview to the Brighton game:
Quote
Brighton can look at the example set by Saturday's hosts Swindon Town of just what can be achieved. Until their 3-0 thumping to Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Swindon had won six times in an unbeaten seven-game run, hauling themselves from near the foot of the League One table on the last day of October to the fringe of the promotion race.

On the last day of October we were 8th.
One place above our current position.
What a run it has been.

What if the club allowed us to camp on the pitch on Friday night?  :)

Me and my friend camped on the pitch the night before STFC played away to Bray Wanderers (Rep of Ireland) in the 80s - we managed to get the friendly game to go ahead.

I am travelling to Swindon on Friday with my shovel in case the club needs me to muck in and clear the pitch, just like we attempted to do v. Southend last season.

You lucky bastard. It's just freezing cold here.

I'd love it to snow, I even wouldn't mind if that meant football was off.

On that subject, I was walking past Rudi's earlier and noticed that it was snowing a bit, but it stopped almost as quickly as it had started.

Then walking back past later on I realised that they have a snow machine up on the roof.

Daft bugger ent I.

Difficult one to call, as it's not so much frost, but more of a dry freeze due to the wind chill.  Not sure what the frost covers would do with this.

BBC are saying sleet / snow early evening then -5 over night, -3 at 9am, then sleet at 3pm with a high of 0.

Not just about the pitch though is it? Wasn't the pitch fine for the game after the snow last season, with it being called off due to the state of the roads and paths around the ground? Or did I make that up?

I'd say its not looking good, especially if the roads from Brighton are fucked.

I know wycombe had a game called off due to how the snow effected the car park and stands. As they have under soil heating!!

You made it up.

The snow was forming a layer of insulation against the frost. We removed  a lot of the snow, but then the pitch froze!

It has been called of previous though due to conditions around the town due to fan safety in being able to get there etc, I'd be surprised if the pitch was not covered though, we don't want 3 games in hand, and after last week's defeat we need a game to get it out of the system.

Might depend if the Brighton coach has made it down today.

From the Brighton Official Site:

Swindon Town are confident that tomorrow's fixture with Albion will go ahead despite the possibility of snow in the town later today.

The Wiltshire club's stadium and operations manager Mark Isaacs provided an update for supporters on Friday morning.

"As a precuation the shaded parts of the pitch were covered on Thursday lunchtime, we expect some snow this afternoon, we temperatures expected to drop as low around minus five this evening. With the most vulnerable part of the playing surface under cover, at this stage
we believe there is a strong chance the game will be played."

Albion's squad will travel to Swindon Town, as planned, at lunchtime today.

I rekon it was -2 from about 4pm this afternoon. They need covers.

The grass will be fine, but the ground underneath is rock hard.

Its very un-British winter weather weve had here. Very cold, but very dry. It all depends how much heat they can get on the pitch.

Oh dear. Now a pitch inspection, which was always on the cards anyway, but I do fear the worst. Ground covers only offer limited protection and with temperatures not expected to rise above freezing today I think we're fucked. So now we can waste some more dosh on nuts, dates and bloody Quality Street. Hope I'm proved wrong.

Title: Re: swindon v brighton: frozen pitch?
Post by: Spencer_White on Saturday, December 19, 2009, 08:44:31
There's no frost because there is no moisture in the air.

Its not normal British weather, so the normal warning sign's arent there. The grass will be fine, but the ground underneath will be very hard.

It will depend on how much good the covers did keeping the pitch warm last night.
