The paper yesterday said the cold spell was only going to be a 24 hour thing, with the "warmth" and rain returning this evening. SO if the game was to be called off, which I doubt it will, it would be more likely due to a waterlogged pitch than a frozen one.

BBC
6pm: Light rain, 4C
9pm: Haevy rain, 4C

Remarkably, the Met Office says the same thing.

i remember once being interviewed by radio wilts before a stockport game by some roving reporter, during the game he asked me if he could interview me afterwards and i agreed. stockport equalised with the last kick of the game and it was proper gutting, along comes the roving reporter with his live mic and rather stupidly asked me what i was going to do now, my reply live at tea time on radio wilts " go and find some stockport and kick the shit out of them" he had a look of pure horror on his face so i added "not really kids" :)

I remember once it was the day of my sisters wedding, must been about 2005, think fallon got a few for us that day.

Yep, I was there. Fallon twice and Jame McMaster I think....

David Duke was playing left back and got injured. King, using his brilliant managers brain moved Paul Mitchell from right back to left back. Moved Ifil from centre back to right back and bought on Heywood who had just come back from 3 months out in at centre half. Whilst Grant Smith stayed firmly seated on the bench.

We completely and utterly crumbled with out our super star defender David Duke and Luke Beckett scored a couple and we drew 3-3.

I almost made the last minute decision to jump on a train oop North for this, then I realised it would cost me £43 and I wouldn't be able to get back to London tonight.

Stockport are crap, on a poor run, its cold and wet, we are 99% certain to lose this match. Or atleast we would have been in previous seasons. Here's hoping we can continue our good run of results, preferably with Charlie bagging another goal or two

I'll be reasonably happy with a draw, but I really want to see us establish outselves in the top 6 after our recent run of form.  Extending a run like this fora few more games can make all the difference in May, and Stockport are very beatable.

It's not stockport's fault,it's the ref who deemed it playable this morning and then deemed it unplayable just now,I see the supporters coach leaving earlier this afternoon so imagine they were nearly there or even there.

It's like walsall all over again but further.

Stockport are running the risk of FA fines with this pitch. Not to mention a serious fixture pile up in the latter part of the season (when they will probably be in a relegation scrap).

I could see a situation developing simmilar to what happened to Motherwell in Scotland.

Its too early in the season to have games called off.

from the adver:

TOWN'S League One clash away at Stockport County this evening has been called off.

Despite the playing surface passing a pitch inspection this morning, referee Michael Oliver checked it over on his arrival at Edgeley Park and decided it was unplayable.

Mr Oliver said he postponed the fixture due to player safety, explaining: "There is a large sanded area in the middle of the pitch.

"Because of the recent rain, the sand on top of that is churning up all the time and would cause an obvious danger to players.

"The current forecast means it will only get worse, and at the moment it is dangerous so we cannot continue.

"I arrived at 5.15pm and went straight onto the pitch - I wasn't asked by the club (Stockport) to come any earlier.

"I discussed it with Gary Abblett and Danny Wilson as soon as they arrived, so we made it as soon as we possibly could.

"The first I knew of it was when I arrived at the ground today."

given the obvious problems with their pitch, why such surprise and why leave it so late? like batch says, shambles

Stockport really need to do something about that pitch, its a joke to be having to postpone games because of rain just 3/4 months into the season is wrong - they should be made to relay another one or pay a fine. It will only disadvantage them in the long run.

Sounds very much that a local Ref was called in and declared the pitch playable with the 9am
pitch inspection.

Mr Oliver arrives at 5pm and immediately has safety concerns.According to Stockport fans message
boards,it's been dry all day up there, but rain arriving this evening.

Wasps Rugby Club back up Mr Oliver's concerns, they refused to play last friday, because they
were worried about their players safety.

It's been raining for the past hour and a half.

Extra day to rest for the players i suppose, but two games behind the rest is going to be tough, especially Leeds, and now away to Stockport - who might start to get some form for the rearranged fixture.

Hopefully i'l be able to go to the new date, bonus!

The local ref obviously thought it was playable. But he's not in charge of the match.

Oliver shouldn't need to be asked to get there early - given the weekends cancellations he should have been there in good time to make sure.

The Flash's match report may be a bit interesting

Just checked the Stockport OS.The club didn't go ahead with a pitch inspection at 9am with

Yes,exactly as the Ref Mr Oliver stated, that Stockport hadn't asked him to arrive early. As soon
as he saw the state of the pitch,he had immediate concerns for the safety of the players.

Title: Re: OFFICIAL FLASH TO STOCKPORT V SWINDON MATCHDAY THREAD

The local ref? Probably pulled some old codger out of Wetherspoons this morning.

Good to see the players in suits. If they want to be the pride of Swindon then they should look like it.

I think we are going to get stronger as the season goes on and it becomes clear we are in with a real chance of the play offs. So these extra fixtures in march sound good to me.

And message to club - there is no point re-scheduling it before March because I doubt that pitch will play many mid week games between now and then. They are going to have a fair few called off this season. If we have a second postponement up there in february we could end up having a fixture on a thursday night on the last week of the season or something like that.

Title: Re: OFFICIAL FLASH TO STOCKPORT V SWINDON MATCHDAY THREAD
Post by: Summerof69 on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 19:04:24
Now Stockport will have to fork out all Swindon's costs for calling it of late, and when you consider they went into admin a few months ago, it's a cost they could do without. Stockport, with two postponements over the weekend, should've had an inspection, and called the ref in early.

Compare this mess with us last year ,calling off the home game against them the day before.

The Rugby was also postponed on Saturday as Wasps I think it was refused to play due to the pitch.

As far as i know that is still under investigation tho because the ref didn't call it off and the opposition team were happy to play it. It was Wasps staff who decided to call it off.

Why even consider a 9am inspection for an evening match ? That would be fine for a 3pm ko but surely much later for an evening game.

From a Stockport fan on the FF.

I was buying my ticket just as your lot turned up in a coach outside the ground and the match was postponed. Yet at 9am there was 'no need for an inspection', an inspection that was planned. Three games called off in four days. Something dodgy about this at our end.

I can only apologise to your lads, must be so f*cking frustrating.

OK..so. Lot of different things I've heard so far.

1. Sale were erecting (tee-hee) another advertising board on the roof of the Main Stand so they had a whopping great crane on the pitch all day f*cking up the surface.

2. The groundsmen poured a load of sand on the pitch to stop the surface freezing. The ref saw all the sand and said straight away that it's unsafe.

3. County didn't even ask the ref to turn up any earlier than his scheduled time to check over the pitch. We didn't even request a pitch inspection.

And I can safely tell you that all three are true.

Sorry again lads and ladies.

I think that the fact that we are a different team this season and can now win these type of games it is a bugger that it's called off as I really thought this was three points in the bag. What a bastard for those that have gone up too ! Total cock up !

You think we've got problems - they're just talking about Orient vs Gills on the radio. Massive traffic problems round Orient and so Gills have only got 7 outfield players and 2 keepers. And their kit's stuck in traffic as well. But apparently the ref is saying if they've got more than 7 players, that's the minimum so they will have to start the game. So, they're going to start 3 players down and playing in skins :)

What a joke. Especially when Oldham's game just up the road is on. Farce. Oh well a fixture pile up beckons for us in the New Year. Not good as we're bound to go on a bad run at some point and we'll want to play our games when we are in good form.

Not sure but think it was 9 although they had to play a keeper as an outfield player.

Apparently D'Urso refused to let them delay start of game, even by a few minutes. What a prick! They seem to think on the radio that as and when players turn up, they can just run on and join in until they've got the 11. Well done D'Urso, you've turned a professional League One game into a Sunday league fixture

It's 9 men for the Gills and it's actually 1-1 now. Fair play to them. You can't blame D'urso though. Gillingham should have left earlier and all gone on a team coach. I mean what team travels to games as individuals anyway?

Oh well.  Pox win with a 94th minute goal, Stevenage concede twice...so instead of being one point behind Stevenage they're 5 ahead.  I'll stay quiet in future.

I've just looked at the table and if we were win our 2 games in hand we'd be 4th.

It's looking increasingly as if Leeds Charlton and Norwich are competing for the top 2, then a clutch of clubs the other PO places....unfortunately we've yet to play either of the top 2....Soton might be able to haul themselves up into contention.

Title: Re: OFFICIAL FLASH TO STOCKPORT V SWINDON MATCHDAY THREAD
Post by: [email protected] on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 21:56:21
I've just had a look on Stockport's website and they have posted:

"The Edgeley Park ground staff worked hard all day to remove the surface water, verti-drained and then sanded the surface.

And whilst the ball rolled satisfactorily, water under the surface was seeping through the sand and, when Michael Oliver tested the bounce of the ball, the ball instantly stuck to the surface when it hit the pitch; there was no bounce whatsover."

Sounds like the groundsman decided that they would be able to get the game on so they didn't have a morning inspection, so when the ref turns up (from Nothumberland) he has a look and quite rightly decides to call it off.

Bloody annoying cos any eejit could tell you that if there is standing water to start with at 9am the chances of getting the game started a slim at best.  Begs the question, why didn't they have a referee check things out at say mid-day (after they had tried to fiix things, but before everyone set off)?

Very much so. I know it's all ifs buts and maybes but I just thought i'd make the point. Would be good to get 7 from the next 3 games going into the Boxing Day game at Charlton. Our 2 home games are certainly winnable anyway.

A 330 mile round trip, three hours there and back for a game that was never ever going to be on.

I note with some interest that they've had to call off the Torquay FA Cup game again, they're going to have some real issues here I think with fixture congestion and just plain old cashflow, considering their well documented financial issues.

Stockport have already asked for their FA Cup game to be played at Torquay's ground. I know there is loads of time left in the season but they will need to relay the pitch and they cannot afford to do that yet. Even if they would the chances are there would be no games at their ground until after the New Year. We already have Leeds penned in for January and we have Oldham to re-arrange as well. So it'll probably be Feb at the earliest. I guess it depends how long we wish to wait to play the game. I'd have thought we won't have a choice in the matter as I can't see the FL allowing us to play them at home twice.

I guess the home game is more of interest than the Stockport rearrangement. Nobody would be silly to go up there again would they? Although they are apparently sorting their pitch out (and have moved their FA Cup game to Rochdale or somewhere to accommodate this).

TOWN have received new dates for their rearranged League One fixtures against Stockport and Oldham.

Danny Wilson's side will travel to Stockport on Tuesday, January 19, kick-off 7.45.

The original match earlier this month was called off just a couple of hours before kick-off due to the state of the Edgeley Park pitch.

Swindon's home clash against Oldham has also been changed, due to Town's FA Cup tie against Fulham on Saturday, January 2.

The game at the County Ground will now be played on Tuesday, February 9.
