Title: Why do you no longer see... Post by: Bogus Dave on Friday, November 27, 2009, 07:49:38 ... large flocks of starlings flying around at dusk anymore?
I remember being a wee lad and seeing this sight quite often, now they seem to have vanished :( Can anyone explain this phenomenon? Title: Re: Why do you no longer see... Post by: herthab on Friday, November 27, 2009, 08:00:14 When I was seeing a bird down in Torquay, earlier this year, we'd quite often see huge flocks of starlings in the evening doing their aerial displays. Used to just stand there and watch them. Amazing.

I remember being a wee lad and seeing this sight quite often, now they seem to have vanished :( Can anyone explain this phenomenon? They still put on some quite good displays down at Slimbridge, near the Wildfowl Trust. Also, when I used to sit in the Town End, I would often watch a small flock of birds flitting between the floodlights on the Stratton Bank rather than the match. And that was only a few seasons ago. Incredible. Title: Re: Why do you no longer see... Post by: Ardiles on Friday, November 27, 2009, 20:32:16 I remember sitting up at the top of the South Stand (as it was then) and watching a flock of starlings do their thing for at least 15 minutes over Ferndale/Gorse Hill. It was a dull game.
And that mullet bloke really looks like he's from Bristol. Title: Re: Why do you no longer see... Post by: oxford_fan on Saturday, November 28, 2009, 00:28:36 There's a place like Otmoor in Norfolk, know the name of it Reg?

Title: Re: Why do you no longer see... Post by: adje on Saturday, November 28, 2009, 20:14:00 I never see chaffinches in my garden yet they used to be the most common bird in Britain.Starlings, however rule the roost.Must be a regional thing.
Title: Re: Why do you no longer see... Post by: Reg Smeeton on Saturday, November 28, 2009, 20:22:19 There's a place like Otmoor in Norfolk, know the name of it Reg? You might be thinking of the Breckland OF, excellent place for bird watching. Although it has changed in recent years it's still an unusual landscape. My forays there have been a bit limited due to its eastern aspect. On a few occasions I've been in the Arkells and watched the starlings wheeling over Buckhurst Field....also sometimes they roost on the floodlights. Buggers if you get them nesting in your roof mind.
