Title: New telly
Post by: chalkies_shorts on Saturday, November 21, 2009, 19:53:13
Neeed a new telly but haven't got a clue what I'm doing other than a 37" will fit nicely. I've got Sky+ but have no thuoghts about upgrading it to HD. I've had a look around and from what I've seen Panasonics look pretty good. Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks for posting this...we're planning to get a new TV tomorrow.  We're going to get a full HD 1080P, on the basis that the TV we're replacing (which still works fine) I got in 1996 - and plan to keep new one for a while too.  LG and Samsung models look good to me.

I got an LG 42" Plasma about 9 months ago, cost £550 and I'm more than happy with it.

A lot of people go on about Panasonic being a lot better, but they tend to be more expensive, its debatable whether they are that much better (especially considering prices) and even if they are better the chances are you won't notice it.

How much are you planning to spend?

I'm kinda with you on that. I said it once before that any TV not being viewed with an amazing or shit one next to it, for contrast, seems fine. My sister got herself a Pioneer that she raves about and sure it looks great, but in total honesty i can't tell it apart from my shitty old Toshiba. Unless of course they were next to each other, which they're not.

Thanks for responses so far I'm looking to spend a max of £1000 but more likely around the £700 mark.

I've just bought a 42inch Panasonic plasma TV for 799 from Burdens.

They'll sort you out.

If you get a good TV it's well worth upgrading to Sky HD, only 9.75 a month and if you do it before Xmas you'll get the box free.

Did you buy it at Amazon or Comet? The latter had it on special offer at 699 this week only.

Bought it at Comet for £699.  To be honest, it was your model I was after, but Curry's next door were selling it for £750...so obviously I went back to Comet.

Really happy with it, but I'm sure I won't be using all the functionality right away.  On a fairly basic Virgin Media package and, even though there are only a few HD channels on there, I would imagine that over time HD will become pretty much standard.

i'd recomend you both to play with the picture settings a bit.a little bit of tweaking can improve your picture even more than the standard set ones.
you can find examples of them online or from reviews of the tv's
