This article, written last week by one Swindon old boy about another, pretty much confirms what we always knew about Shearer's transfer to Blackburn in 1992.

No point in being bitter about it, to be honest.  Had we gone up in 1992, I doubt our experience in the top flight in 1992/93 would have been much different to what it was the following year.  Hoddle might have stayed, but otherwise...I'm not sure.  Maskell would not have signed, but then he didn't last long during our Premiership season either.  Interesting, none the less.

Good article, its nice to hear the man himself saying what we all have always thought.

If that is what happened I don't see that we've got any reason to be pissed as we got a decent sum of money from him. Shearer on the other hand has a right to as he is the one that got shafted most over it, but then he didn't have to agree to the move either did he?

I dont think we got the going rate for a 32 goal striker. Remember thinking that both Shearer and later Fjortoft went for minimal amounts compared to others at that time. However, it could just be the mists of time blurring my judgement.

big dunc was a big fav of mine.the best centre forward i've seen for us infact.
many would say fjortoft, but i'd take shearer over him any day.

An interesting read for sure, but can't help feeling Big Dunc himself is caught up in what I've always believed to be a bit of an urban myth about his sale.

It was a choker when he went, but we were on a dodgy run and, although we stopped scoring goals.......our results improved without him (sound a familiar tale......?).  Drew a lot, won a few and ended up with an outside chance on the last day at Derby.  And lost.

A couple of drawn games stand out from the end of the 1991/2 Season when we had the diminutive Terry Gibson as a replacement for Deadly Dunc. Terry Gibson's late header into the top corner at Watford away when David James pulled off a wonder save where the bigger Dunc would have got over it and headed down.

Also remember Lingy going around the keeper at Millwall away and tamely tapped it goalwards for it to be hacked away. Actually not getting a late winner at the Old Den might have been a bleassing in disguise.

Dunc's comments that the club was a financial mess sum up what we all knew and with the players we had to sell between 1990 and 1993, Alan Mac, Fitz, Kerslake etc we might have stood a chance if we had still had hold of them when we got to the Premier.

Still Golden Days when chasing for what is now the Championship playoffs was the norm....

Bought back a lot of memories of the days when i really felt the excitment of going to watch the town and losing Big Dunc was a disaster in my mind.

Once met Dalgleish at a corporate thing and he said it was the reason Rovers signed Dunc.  Maybe he was just bullshitting.

The hardest shot ive ever seen on a Town player,i remember it took him a fair few matches to score his first for us and scored v Palace after the goalie messed up...think it was a cup game,also was at Plymouth when he scored four and could of had eight.

Not to mention one of my favourite goals I never saw (live) v Baggies at the Hawthornes.

Or given the difficulty with his rather strong accent, maybe he was saying "Could you pass the potato salad?"

after the legends game i told him he scored in the first game i ever went to, i told him this and he walked off mumbling something like "oh right"

I remember one occasion during the early 1990s when Shearer had just blasted a good ball over the crossbar.  I used to stand on the Stratton Bank back then and someone nearby started laying in to him very loudly.

Just then, there was another voice from the front of the stand, even louder.  'Oi!  Who said that?'

The first bloke sheepishly raises his hand.  Everyone's looking.  The bloke at the front then eyeballs him, jabs his finger and says very slowly 'He's fucking God!'  Half of the Bank was in stitches.
