3-1 Town was my prediction in the end. I've decided Austin is the new Torres.

Let's hope Tranmere know where their own net is, and stick the ball in it a couple of times, otherwise I'm fearing a 0-0 or worse still another 1-0.

Hopefully DW has told them that to score you need to get a shot on target at some point

Anyone remember the Tranny 'bomb burst' free-kick in the early/ mid 80s at Prenton Park? They formed a wall in front of Town's wall and Tranny scattered as their player ran up to take the kick. We got bamboozled and the ball went in the net!

Who thinks Easton will get a chance, unless we are four nil down?

I'm not liking this 'OMDT' rubbish.  I'm sure we've lost every time the thread has been named that way.

That said, we're well overdue for a win...a scrappy 1-0.  (Brentford seems a while ago now.)

Yes, before we were relegated from what is now the Championship.  Broomes would have had a great career but for injury.  He was on loan at Crewe last season.

Gareth Edds so well liked by Andy King is also in the Tranmere team.

Pook was annoying, Fola was just pure entertainment. He produced some of the best moments of skill ever seen at the County Ground, completely by accident, then would follow it up by the best moments of stupidity. Worth the entrance fee... Although I actually remember a Lincoln fan genuinely telling me that he thought Onibuje was quality for us.

I'm all for sideways passes... Eventually we should turn the players around 90 degrees and we'll start passing it forwards more. Genius.

Title: Re: Tranmere vs Swindon OMDT
Post by: No Longer Posh Red on Saturday, October 31, 2009, 15:35:17
TBF I would rather we pass sideways & keep the ball than just hoof it up the pitch & lose it. However at some point someone has to make a pass forwards.

For me a big part of the problem we currently have is that the players we have playing in advanced roles don't have good movement. They too often wait for the ball to be played to them, or over the top for them to chase after.

Anyway, I've got to go out now so here comes the Avalanche of Town goals  (keeping fingers tightly crossed).

I don't see the problem of keeping possesion if there's no options, alright if you're losing with 5/10 minutes to go it's a pain but if you get the ball and be patient with it you will find an opening. I never understand why our fans boo when we keep possesion?! God if only we could score from anywhere.... I miss Paul Evans :(

Classic for a relegation team, dominate and give up two goals.  The Tranny fans wondered why the defence was depleted and Barnes was signing midfielders, might explain the scoreline.

The Ferryman should have scored-who pays him?

Who Pays the Ferryman? was a television series produced by the BBC in 1977.

The eight-part series was written by Michael J. Bird. An ex-soldier returns to Crete, to take stock after his boat- building business is bought out, thirty years after he had fought alongside the local resistance (andartes) during the Second World War. He finds the ghosts of the past waiting for him there, and those who would do him ill. The shadows of his past interrupt and threaten his present happiness.

The serial was filmed on location in the Elounda area of Crete and was particularly memorable for its theme tune composed by Yannis Markopoulos, which became a hit in the UK. The soundtrack album and the book of the series continue to be popular with visitors to Crete.

Jack Hedley starred in the central role of Alan Haldane, whilst other notable cast members in the serial included Betty Arvaniti, Neil McCarthy, Stefan Gryff, Patience Collier, Jack Watson, Lalla Ward, Gareth Thomas, Patrick Magee, Marina Sirtis and Sally Knyvette.

It is possible to buy the series on DVD on import from the Netherlands.

Here are the key moments from today's first half:

Two mins: Anthony McNamee gets down the left flank and whips a cross into the danger area.

Billy Paynter gets just ahead of his marker, Marlon Broomes, but the defender does enough to stop Paynter having a clear strike at goal and the ball bobbles harmlessly to Tranmere keeper David Martin.

Five mins: Michael Ricketts eases past Gordon Greer wide on the right and delivers a deep cross which midfielder Gareth Edds, making a late run, is inches away from connecting with at the far post.

11 mins: Paul McLaren's corner is met by a powerful downward header by Ian Goodison, but the Tranmere centre-back see his effort clawed away by David Lucas for another flag kick.

20 mins: McLaren curls a 25-yard free-kick over the wall but is unable to beat Lucas, with Town's keeper producing a smart stop to turn the ball around the post.

26 mins: Ricketts' neat lay-off to the edge of the area is met by a half-volley from Edds, but the strike is comfortable for Lucas to deal with.

33 mins: Town work a short corner and McNamee's ball in is deflected to Michael Timlin around 25 yards out. The midfielder tries his luck first time but sends the shot high and wide.

34 mins (GOAL 0-1 Paynter): A superb low cross from Jon-Paul McGovern bounces across the six yard line, and with Tranmere's defence and keeper failing to deal with it, Paynter pounces from close range to tuck it home.

39 mins (GOAL 0-2 Paynter): McNamee's searching ball to the right touchline is challenged for by Zoumana Bakayogo and Kevin Amankwaah.

The Town man wins possession and streaks down the line before sending a low cross in which Paynter sweeps home from six yards out.

43 mins: The Tranmere defence stop expecting an offside flag against Tope Obadeyi as Amankwaah sends a long ball over the top.

But Paynter races onto the ball from deep and heads for the penalty area. A heavy touch, however, allows Goodison to recover and get goalside of the front man, taking any power out of his shot

I was going to put a 0-0 down today but forgot. Glad I did now.

Wilson, goal drought over?

First 15 -20 min. a lot of corners and balls in our box, first goal massively important.  Could have had seven with the chances made in the second half.  Put balls into the right places.  First two goals were real quality, crosses with Billy getting ahead of his marker.

Passed well in second half, good pace.  Billy could have had a first half hattrick.  Played well in the reserves on Tuesday.  Billy came back in shedloads.  If we can get goals into areas we will score.  Macca and Ferry need to score more often.  Bright in free kicks.

Fans worry, Wilson doesn't worry.  Today a big lift for the players.  FA Cup big game for us next week.  It's all about confidence, might be more belief now.  Dissappointed about goal conceded.

Yes, it looks like a cup, it shines like a cup, and you get knocked out if you don't win, so yes it's a cup.

Interesting to see that we have now climbed above Rovers, on goal difference. A few weeks ago people were looking at Rovers and complaining that we weren't doing as well as them and that we weren't scoring enough. We're now 2 goals to the good. We do need to keep picking up the points though as it's all a bit tight behind us.

Interestingly Rovers like us have scored double the amount of goals away as at home, no team in the Div has scored less than us at home.....big win today as it lifts the pressure. Despite what may happen in the cup, we're not going to get a great deal of games in November...I'm assuming Leeds will be postponed...so the potential for slipping down the table too much is abatted.

The rest, will simply enjoy the victory.

I suppose a loss to Woking wouldn't look too clever...as said managers are only ever a bad run from the sack, managers prove their competence by getting results. Wilson goes on...for now.  ;)

My research tells me that the last comparable result was 3-0 away at Wycombe in the league in 2004.

Parkin with a rare goal from outside the box if I remember.

Also; Several Swindon fans dragged away by police for going on the green stuff whilst celebrating.

The Wycombe game and its predecessor at Looton, were our only 2 wins in the last 10 of that season...at one point we threatened auto, only to stumble into the PO's.

Haha, i was there. My mate used to have a problem that when we scored he would just run on the pitch and then suddenly realise he shouldn't be there. He got kicked out of the Withdean for it in the play off game and fortunately got away with it at that game.

I also remember that game because there was 4 or 5 of us and outside the stadium we bumped into some lads we used to go to school with. We started chatting, then one of my friends, in total seriousness and who is a school teacher, says, "So anyway, what are you lot doing in Wycombe then?" Trigger would've been proud.

Regarding the Brighton game, I know someone who was in the covered seats, leapt over one of the old Doris' when Parkin scored and ran up the running track, and gave the Brighton fans a clenched fist salute.

He just got shown back to his seat.

I was actually one of the few who made the journey, a long 506 mile round trip but for once it was worth it!

We started slowly and they were the better team, struggled to get out of our half for the first 25 mins but after a while we got going and starting getting the ball out wide and some decent crosses into the box led to Paynters two goals, both good finishes, after that we dominated the rest of the half and looked on top.

In the second half, we started brilliantly and should have scored a few more goals early on. They came back with a few chances but we were in control and got the 3rd on the counter attack, decent run by tope and a good pull back which was well left by jpm and macca did well to finish on his weaker foot. We then gave away a sloppy goal but never looked in real trouble and ferry scored a good 4th.

Billy Paynter was immesne today, he was brilliant and was unlucky not to get a hat trick. Defence lokked fairly solid apart from the one sloppy goal. Tope ran around a lot without acheiving too much and Ferry had a great game in the centre of midfield.

All in all it was a great performance and nice not only to get the 3 points but to get a few goals aswell!

Nice to see the goals spread around the side today. A brace for Paynter must surely get his confidence levels right up again. Maybe the competition for places up front and the general clamour for a decent striker is having an effect?

Having Austen on the bench must focus some minds as well.

Granted, Tranmere are shit, but to score four goals away from home isnt easy.

Shame about the goal conceded - Cuthbert and Greer need to kick some fucking ass in defence because that keeps on happening and has cost us more than a few games already. If we do sort out the lack of goals this season it would be shit to ruin things by conceding sloppy goals.

All in all, thats a fucking good 3 points on the board after a dismal run of performances and results. Well done Wilson and the lads.

My house is ¾ mile from Surrey.

Bit of county boundary trivia for anyone who is interested...

The shortest border between two English counties is just 20 yards/metres long.  Which two counties share this very short border?

I hate the internet.  You used to have to graft.

You're right though.  The tripoints (points at which three counties meet) for Northamptonshire/Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire (latterly Peterborough unitary authority) and Northamptonshire/Lincolnshire/Rutland are just 20 yards apart.  The site, just off the A1 near Stamford, Lincolnshire, looks rather unimpressive.
